Every professor I've ever had said this. Most every professor friends across all schools have had have said this. Very, very rarely does it ever materialize. Your profs are telling you this because they want class participation. Not once did I raise my hand in class and I turned out fine.

This backs up everything I've heard from upperclassmen I've talked to at my school. Even 2Ls + 3Ls who had a professor explicitly say in the syllabus that class participation would be taken into account ended up with an A without voluntarily speaking in class more than a couple times the whole semester (a handful said they never did it and still got an A).

Found this to be interesting though it would be nice if OP specified the school.

At Columbia grade "bumping" and potential "dinging" based on participation appears to be common here, a majority of my classes have sections in the syllabus that mention it.

Does it actually happen though? The impression I've gotten from friends who are in school is that it is mentioned often but rarely practiced.

It is the same 2 or 3 clowns that raise their hand in every class to essentially regurgitate exactly what the rest of the people in the room read the night before, but they word it in such a way to convey the illusion that they are some fkn legal god and the rest of us are merely spectators to the legal waltz that is about to ensue between this dikweed and the professor.

I hope they don't get bumped up

I know from personal experience- meaning, the two times I TAed that the two professors I worked with definitely had a naughty and nice list w/r/t grades.

The nice list wasn't the people who talked the most- rather, it was the people who actually said something decent when they spoke.

If you never spoke but came to class, you were neutral

The only way to end up in the naughty list was to skip class more than a few times.

In one class, the prof even asked me about a couple of people in my year who had missed a bunch of classes to see if I knew if there was anything going on in their life that justified the absences before she dung them.

You know when people should talk in class?

1) When the professor calls on them.
2) When they have a legitimate, brief question to ask to clarify a point.

Otherwise, shut the hell up.
