Yep, that pretty much sums it up.

Also, if you're not technically inclined and rely on others for help.. I'd wager that help is going to come a lot quicker if it's OneNote vs. CircusPonies. I used to offer tutoring on all Microsoft products on my college campus - I doubt the tutors have the same experience with CP. Either way, that brings up a pretty good question: Check to see what any techies at the law school advocate perhaps?

Nothing wrong with using Word/TextMate/Pages/etc.

Circus Ponies has a pretty good forum section for support. http://forums.circusponies.com/ OP, if you already have a Mac you can try CP for free for 30 days.

I would have hated to use a Mac during 1L, but to each his own.

August: Freaking out about which note-taking software to use.

October: Spending all of class on facebook/gchat.

Circle of life.

I think Microsoft offers Word, OneNote, etc. online for free as well (web-based), but a bit more limited features wise.

But OneNote is nifty (both the desktop version and web-based) especially if you get all high-tech and share OneNote notebooks with others in your class (on the same network) and then both of you can write simultaneously on the same page, taking notes in class at 2x speeds! Never tried but, but it is there . . .

It's not very stable that way. Selecting a lot of the menus makes it crash.

You can probably just google up a Cornell Notes template and slap some appropriate tables in there. (I'm assuming ON does tables.)

EDIT: here -- http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templ ... 80377.aspx

I started with something like this, then in the main area created a table with rows for each element of the brief (or subtables for each if you prefer rows for sub items so everything lines up across the page) and columns for my version, the professors version or comments, and notes on that item.

There's a similarly built area for further discussion below (to distinguish questions and class discussion from professor's remarks/doctrine/cited authorities), and I also added a little bit of structure to the summary area.

My brief template doesn't have a cue column, and it has a header w/the case caption, party info, COA and synopsis. My lecture note template has the cue column but not all the brief header crap. The briefs are linked to/from the corresponding lecture notes.

I don't really do a full brief, it's more like an bullet item style that I fill as I read and then take out the extraneous crap.

I do this in DevonThink but it should be possible in OneNote.

can someone please explain the difference between VMware, parallels, and crossover? Is there a consensus on the superiority of VMware?

VMware/parallels emulate PC hardware so you are running an actual install of Windows. VMware, IMO, is superior. Parallels doesn't support pushing multiple cpu cores to the guest so it tends to run slower. I've also experienced less compatibility issues with the way it manages the virtual hard drive. Crossover allows you to run some windows programs without having the overhead of running windows. Some programs work great, some don't. You can lookup software on their site to see if it's compatible or not.

Seriously. I can see sifting through 30, 40, or 100 pages of posts.. but there's 2. TWO. Pages. You could of at least read those pages before posting and not expecting a rebuttal. Errm.. an "obnoxious" rebuttal.

Yea, that's the most it should be, but it is going to be free at several schools.

I started using OmniOutliner today (they have a 14-day trial), but I want to give Circus Ponies a try too.
