I would use my old fried laptop for movies and youtube. I suspect streaming movies was the culprit.

Some poorly designed laptops do tend to cook themselves over time. I'd replace it in a hurry rather than relying on a cooling pad, though. If your laptop doesn't need one, then don't use one.
