He probably has negative things to say about us because he is a fake poster from JDU and likes the depressing, pessimistic style of xoxo. TLS is NOT naive or too optimistic. It is like a walking emo fest over here.
Btw- you sound like a gigantic douche even if you are a professor.

Nah, he sounds pretty run of the mill-ish in douchey-ness for a law prof.A'nold wrote:He probably has negative things to say about us because he is a fake poster from JDU and likes the depressing, pessimistic style of xoxo. I concur. If he is a law prof, he's probably a shitty LRW one who really doesn't teach.A'nold wrote:He probably has negative things to say about us because he is a fake poster from JDU and likes the depressing, pessimistic style of xoxo. When I see polls about Golden Gave v. Wayne State v. Capital v. Thomas Jefferson v. Pace for environmental law, Marquette v. Chapman v. Gonzaga with a desire to do sports law or entertainment law, etc. These aren't terribly serious discussions.Bankhead wrote:I read your thread on XOXO and noticed you have some unkind words about the people who post on top-law-schools. What is it about the posters on TLS that bore/disgust you? Is it a certain naivety? And do you notice the same thing in the students you teach?
I don't have a horse in this race and I'm certainly not offended. I'm just curious.
A legal career can be an excellent choice for many people, and many non-first tier law schools can provide great opportunities, with the usual caveats of debt load, expectations of employment, and so on. But the naive discussions treating some of these niche programs (e.g., environmental, entertainment, and sports law) seriously, or treating a scattered group of fourth-tier or geographically bizarre schools as all equal and viable, shows naivite.
For students, there's an element of naivite, but I think that's washed away fairly quickly as the grind of daily readings sinks in. I haven't taught for a terribly long period of time yet, but there's certainly a sobering period in law school. I've seen a number of people unnecessarily pessimistic throughout their three years (and I was one of them, so I can relate), and a number of people unnecessarily optimistic (carefree despite bad grades, oblivious to their impending unemployment and debt load). A number, however, reach a balance of realism. For some, that realism can be depressing, because they didn't fully consider what a legal career meant or what their job options would be.

Shortporch has posted on xoxo extensively and provided help, useful feedback, and commentary. To have a real, live, fresh law professor on the website adding to the conversation is probably the most valuable conceivable resource for this community. I can't believe you'd respond so viciously. Hell, I can't even believe you'd call flame based on the conversation thus far... for fucks' sake.
Shortporch: I've followed all of your threads on XO am deeply appreciative. I think more than anything else TLS is a diverse community of law students (and I don't mean that in a positive way). It's hard to characterize the group, because we have everything from juniors in college to 3Ls headed to CoA clerkships. Plenty of pessimists, plenty of optimists, plenty of people who read/value XO, JDU, ATL, etc. instead of just guzzling koolaid before being handed their just dollar$ degree.

To add on the above, shortporch's commentary on XO regarding publication is worth reading, and far surpasses any advice I've seen on TLS regarding legal scholarship.

Follow up to the XO discussion on publication (because I would prefer not to set up an account there):
You briefly discussed 10k word articles as potential follow-ups to a longer articles. What about 10k word stand-alone survey pieces? I am currently writing an article of about 10k words that outlines various approaches to reforming a particular area of law. It's pretty broad in scope, but doesn't go into too much depth. Would this type of article be taken more seriously if it were expanded into the 20-25k word range to allow for increased depth?
Also, is it a terrible idea to get a first piece published in a relatively poorly ranked journal? How difficult is it to get published in a 4th tier law review? Do those journals pretty much have to take pretty much anything that comes through the door? Is it a better idea to try to go for secondary journal publication at a better known school?
