That's false though.
The competition for government, NGO, and public interest jobs is pretty stiff, and having that T-14 paper behind your name could be the difference between getting a position and not.

I'm dropping out if my roommate gets higher grades than me.

Since I'm only at Cornell, if I don't get at least a 3.6, I'm dropping out since that'll rape my chances of transferring to a T10

I'll consider transferring if I'm sub-3.0 - so much of that depends on Contracts.

we're curved at a B+ dooder. You've have to perform substantially below curve in every class to go below 3.0JSUVA2012 wrote:I'll consider transferring if I'm sub-3.0 - so much of that depends on Contracts.

I think about that more and more each day. I have felt increasingly more confused about my performance on each exam as time goes on. I have thought about cutting my losses and running if I did badly. I feel like it would be humiliating, though.

I'm going to stick around no matter what. I've sunk too much into this; I have to see it through.

Hell if you're below the top 5 percent at Yale you should really drop out. It's much better to just use your undergrad degree and get work experience in this economy than to get a crappy non Yale law degree (or Yale with a ranking worse than top 5 percent). A JD really isn't a flexible degree like a lot of people think it is; you have much more options with an undergrad degree and no debt than a Columbia one with 120K+ in debt ITE. Half of CLS are not getting jobs this year. Only top 2 percent at Michigan and UVA are getting firm jobs, and only the top 1 percent with Law Review at CDGN are getting jobs this year. You should definitely just drop out OP and get a job in management consulting.

JD really isn't all that flexible, actually.kurama20 wrote:Hell if you're below the top 5 percent at Yale you should really drop out. Yeah I know; that's why I think most people should just use their undergrad degrees. Undergrad degrees are very flexible and you don't have to worry about the debt (especially liberal arts undergrad degrees like political science, there is really no limit to what you can do with a BA in Poli Sci.)dresden doll wrote:JD really isn't all that flexible, actually.kurama20 wrote:Hell if you're below the top 5 percent at Yale you should really drop out. Re: Anyone planning on dropping out if they get bad grades?
Spare me the sarcasm. I'm pretty well aware of how 'flexible' a Poli Sci degree is (got one myself, actually) and won't be dropping out of U of C for that exact reason - I know my options would suck a lot more without that JD than with it. That, however, does not invalidate the fact that a) certain other people pursuing the JD (such as, say, engineers) do have valid alternatives to finishing LS no matter what their grades/debt winds up being and b) JD in and of itself isn't that flexible.kurama20 wrote:Yeah I know; that's why I think most people should just use their undergrad degrees. Even if I do not finish in the top-half of a T10, I really have no other options ... I somewhat regrettably (at least in the short term) walked away from a six-figure job so I am in this for the long-run!
+1 to Mallard's sunk costs ... b/w the a semester's worth of tuition and foregone wages, I have too much invested at this point!

I will admit that killing myself is much more likely than dropping out ... I have more respect for one who takes their own life than a dropout!betasteve wrote:If I have bad grades, I'll probably just killself. I mean, what's the point - really.

Yeah. Law not exactly known for a low suicide rate.Alexandria wrote:This is why that's not funny:betasteve wrote:If I have bad grades, I'll probably just killself. I mean, what's the point - really.

Re: Anyone planning on dropping out if they get bad grades?
Relaaaax. I'm just trying to figure out why people think the bolded is some shockingly new bit of information to people on here. Realistically these people who have the undergrad degrees that are very useful aren't the one's flooding law schools. No joke people with engineering undergrad degrees and elite (ivy, Duke, Stanford etc.) undergrad degrees have better options. Besides what the hell happened to all the people who were attending law school because they actually want to be lawyers, it seems like everyone on here has forgot about these endangered specimens.dresden doll wrote:Spare me the sarcasm. When you go around telling people that they suck and are idiots for attending a "TTT" law school, and that you don't see anything other than graduating above median at a "top 5" as worth it, you sort of put yourself in a situation where you have a high chance of writing a check that you just can't cash.I find it ridiculous (in the sad sense) that anyone would take their own lives for any reason, let alone over something as truly insignificant as how you do in law school.

Re: Anyone planning on dropping out if they get bad grades?
Betasteve, I agree with you here ... nevertheless, as with most suicides, as insignificant as the reasons may appear to outsiders, the reasons (even if it be poor performance in law school) are terribly significant to the actor. The final decision is typically a culmination of many other events that occured in one's life and the final reason (as insignificant as it may be) is what ultimately drives the person to the choice that they make. With that said, the Michigan story is tragic! I can't speak for others schools, but so far, I have been unimpressed with the services / counseling available to law students dealing with such significant stress and anxiety.betasteve wrote:I find it ridiculous (in the sad sense) that anyone would take their own lives for any reason, let alone over something as truly insignificant as how you do in law school.

I think that this is a great idea! Sadly, as I don't have my dogs with me at school, I will have to get in as many walks in the artic cold as possible over the next couple of weeks.
