Seriously, if you ever see it, buy it. I've had multiple types of their blends and they are amazing. As far as singles go, Highland Park, Talisker, and Lagavulin are all awesome, neat with a splash of water.

Johnny Black can be good but is inconsistent. Johnny Blue is good, but is also vastly overpriced for the quality and is ultimately a status symbol rather than an excellent scotch. Any of the Compass Box blends destroys Blue at about a quarter of the price.

Weird that Black would be inconsistent. A big reason to blend is for consistency. I'll have to try Compass Box. I like all the Walkers above Black, but I'd never pay for Blue or for the King George Blue myself, though I've had Blue. Also better than Black, J&B.

Wrong. On so many levels. So wrong.

I think it is a real shame how so many people in the united states think tequila means jose cuervo (which should not even be called tequila) or patron (which I can drink, but is my no means great). Tequila has an amazing range of flavor and complexity, augmented by the vast differences between blanco, reposado, and anejo.

Since I graduated from college 5 years ago, good tequilas are 90 percent of what I drink. Recently I have also started getting into whisky (some great suggestions on here, the macallan 12 is what i've had most recently) and I actually see a lot of similarities between the two.

My tequila palate isn't nearly developed enough, but I do enjoy sipping the 1800 Reposado. I haven't had enough añejo to truly talk about tequila yet, though. It isn't that I don't like it; it's just that anytime I spend big money on booze, it's either whisky or absinthe. It's hard to develop tastes for all facets of expensive liquor on a 501 C 3 salary.

Yeah, agreed on the Margarita style. Margarita mixer is for pantydroppers. The Margarita is basically a tequila sidecar and should be treated as such.

I wish I'd had more tequila when I was in puerto vallarta and mazatlan . If I were on foot, I totally would have, but we were on a cruise ship and didn't have enough time on shore to figure out where was a tourist trap and where was an actual good bar with good selection.

Red is horrible. There is nothing it does well. Nothing. For the price, you can have better American or Irish whiskey. And it makes a horrible show for the Scotch name. Black I could drink in a mixed drink or straight if pressed. Red? I wouldn't even let it be in my smokey martini. It'd cheapen the gin.

For me, black is th perfect combination of quality and cost in a scotch. Cheap enough to be mixed without guilt, quality enough to drink straight. I know above posters question its on the rocks capabilities, but, I think it does just fine at the price point.

At the price point, certainly. As I said, if pressed I could drink black straight. Even better on the rocks and it's cheap enough that I'd mix with it. I still don't think it's a particularly good scotch, but it's very drinkable, a quality that red does not possess. If I were bar-tending* for a friend and I knew nobody attending was a scotch drinker, I'd just bring black and be done with it. But aside from smokey martinis and maybe a rob roy, I'm not a big fan of scotch for mixing, so you won't find black in my cabinet.


*Yes, this is a service I have provided before. I've never bar-tended professionally, but I enjoy mixing and for a while had a fully-stocked, amateur bar. I strongly cut back on mixed drinks as a part of losing the weight gained at my desk-job in a building constantly filled with tempting pastries, so I've let most of my mixers and even base alcohols diminish to zero with the last party. I doubt I'll spend the money to get re-stocked for school. Though if anyone at UMN has a bunch of alcohol they'd like me to mix up, I'd be happy to do so.

I'll say this in response to some of the alcohol elitism going on in this here thread. I am a man who loves to drink top shelf bourbon, and also loves to crush a ton of fratty light. TCR is this, drink so much that it all tastes like water anyway, drink nice stuff, drink cheap stuff, just go and get drunk. If you can't afford to crush the expensive stuff, go to Law School or something to fund the addiction.

Personal Favorites:
Woodford Reserve - Bourbon
Maker's Mark - Bourbon
Cognacs that I can't recall or pronounce
Natty (Fratty) Light - The last sip tastes like the metal in the can, deal with it.
Any Abita Beer - you might not be able to find this stuff outside of SEC territory, but if you can, buy it now.
German Pilsners- DAB actually tastes like a really smooth natty or Keystone, which makes sense because all three are pilsners.

Fraternity Man to the core, I promise you I drank harder than you in undergrad in order to show the younger brothers how it's done. (In fact I am almost positive I am in the "Overheard at the LSAT" thread talking about showing the pledges how it's done)
Alcoholic, ~4 years, by no means a long term user compared to many of you gents and ladies, but it happens.

Glenmorangie is pretty good too, especially the la santa sherry cask.

Fantastic post overall, but I just had to say: if you like the La Santa, try Sonnalta PX. It's even better. Oddly enough: the La Santa is generally trashed by most critics. I never understood why.

Yes, I have read of people who do not like it. It has also won a pretty wide array of awards though. There are alot of conflicting opinions in the scotch world. I wouldn't say its a FAVORITE of mine, but I did enjoy it. I will definitely keep an eye out for the Sonnalta PX.

So much so that you know more about Scotch than 'experts' like Michael Jackson? He gives Black Label 9/10 and says "Is Black Label a great whisky? Was Dizzy Gillespie a great musician?". He rates Blue Label slightly higher still.

I have at least eight different bottles of malt on the shelf, but if offered a blended whisky I'm not going to hold my nose and I'm certainly not adding ice and coke.

Many others in the Scotch Whisky world promote and even prefer blends, and Johnnie Walker make some of the best.

I never disagreed....you quoted someone else, not me my friend, if you read back in the thread it should be clarified for me you. I said "Johnnie green and gold are your best bet." Blended scotches can certainly be good, but they're not for me. And the main point I was making was that blue is a complete rip off, not that its a bad blend.

Yes it is finished in rum casks. I think they call it "Caribbean cask" to widen the sources of the casks they use...no matter to me, it still tastes excellent. It doesn't get as much sweetness as you would imagine from the rum cask but really alot of rich spice, plus some dried fruit tones...really nice.
