Re: 1L grade waiting thread
I think the whole grades are inverse of how you think you did is directly tied to how hard the exam was. If the exam was doable, and a strong testtaker would get 90%+ of the issues/points if s/he managed time well and really knew the material cold, then predicting your grade will be easier. But on a really difficult, racehorse style exam that implicates way too many issues than can be satisfactorily discussed in 3 hours, EVERYONE will feel like they missed things. And the people who did best will often be the ones who think of the most things that they missed. The people who feel good about the exam (ie feel like they wrote almost everything they knew about the topics on the exam) probably didn't ever have the necessary understanding of the subject to do well.
Anyway, I know that won't hold true for everyone, but I think it gives a little credence to the inverse relationship mess. For my little anecdote, one of my exams was super difficult, the prof probably gave too little time, and half the test was on a topic we spent only a couple class periods on. I left feeling okay, but I kept thinking about the exam, talking with a few friends, and I started feeling worse and worse about it, and after a couple weeks I was praying for median. I KNEW of at least 2 BIG issues I missed, and lots of little ones. Wound up with the top grade.
There's a few other factors in prediction too, obviously, like relatively honest self-appraisal like the poster above said, which I've never been any good at. And the enormous luck factor.

I predicted almost all of my 1L grades exactly right. I never experienced the phenomenon of thinking I did horribly and getting a good grade, or thinking I killed it and getting a poor grade.
But my first 2 grades, while "good," make top 5% pretty unreachable.

I was just glancing through my exam answers...I'm guessing I'll be about bottom 25th percentile. P/P/P/P/LP.

I guess in most cases thats true. I think there is point where everyone considers a grade good or not but when I see people complaining about A-'s on here in kinda shocks me.beach_terror wrote:Completely dependent on the person and their expectations.BarbellDreams wrote:

To me a good grade is anything above median. A B+ is a good grade, but obviously i'd be much happier with an A or A-.

Re: 1L grade waiting thread
Still no grades for us and we've been back in classes for 10 days. Last day of finals was Dec. 16th. Thankfully grades are due this week. The more time has gone by, the more I feel like I have no idea how I did. My gut feeling is that I did the best in K, followed by torts, LRW, and civ pro, in that order. Blerg

If you're like me and convinced that you're going to get lots of discretionary C's, almost anything is a win.beach_terror wrote:Completely dependent on the person and their expectations.BarbellDreams wrote:

Got a 3.4 on a 3.0 curve. Any idea where that might leave me?

Haiku seems to be a good way to express one's feelings.
Oh, my professors
Clearly you do not hurry
I wait for the axe
Median, the bridge
Will I walk on the wet wood
Or tumble below

RVP11, you're wrong. California Babe used that meme just fine. How many sentences your story contained, and whether it was on topic or not has nothing to do with it.RVP11 wrote:You're not using that right - it can't be a COOL STORY when it's only two sentences and directly on topic to razzing 1Ls for their poor grade-prediction skills.California Babe wrote:RVP11 wrote:I predicted almost all of my 1L grades exactly right. You walk into the thread, tell everyone else they suck, and then discuss how you pulled a Nostradamus on your 1L grades. If you weren't coming across as a douche then maybe you could slide.
But douche + anecdote = COOL STORY BRAH.
