Ironic that the company that made the classic 1984 commercial is now the choice of the lockstep trendwhores. Oh, your MBA has a pink cover? SO UNIQUE.dextermorgan wrote:Lol, this one girl in my class just got a new HP. I feel sorry for her.laxbrah420 wrote:There's like 4 kids in my class with pcs, fwiw. They're so passé

I was just referring to the fact that HPs are, and have been, utter shit.rinkrat19 wrote:Ironic that the company that made the classic 1984 commercial is now the choice of the lockstep trendwhores. Depends a lot on which one you buy. Like most PC makers they have cheap laptops and quality business grade stuff. I doubt anyone that wants to run windows would be disappointed with an HP EliteBook.dextermorgan wrote: I was just referring to the fact that HPs are, and have been, utter shit.

They're a small step better than Dells. Believe it or not, E-Machines(Acer) ranks higher than both in my book for quality and reliability.
I have an E-Machine that runs like butter and cost me 250 bucks(14"). Had an issue with the battery. They shipped me a new one under warranty.

I'd love to argue with this and brag about how my POS HP Pavilion has been pretty trouble-free...but I'm also waiting for my brand-new HP Envy to get back from a second repair trip in 2 months.ResolutePear wrote:No. All HP's are shit.albanach wrote:Depends a lot on which one you buy. Re: Computers for Law School 2011
Not being a Mac fan I purchased an Asus around Christmas. Since then I have had to return it twice. Once because the cover hinges came apart (this glitch is well documented by Asus). Best Buy (a store every bit as bad as the defunct Circuit City) would not honor their warranty because a hinge falling apart is deemed as physical damage. When I sent it to Asus they fixed it for free (obviously aware of their glitch).
Inside a month the screen became unreadable again. Went to Best Buy and asked them to back up my drive since I had to send it out, they would for $99 (I hate those people!). Screw that, I hooked up this crappy computer to my TV screen and backed it up. Once again it is now en route to Asus. Whether or not they will fix it, who knows? I say that because I received a lecture from Asus saying that if the problem was deemed caused by the user the warranty would not cover it. How can a software glitch be the fault of the user?
Perhaps just a rumor but I was just told Best Buy and Asus are partners, which is why BBuy pushes these flawed computers on consumers. Unless you have backup computer, Beware.

I need some computer help. My computer randomly decides to get really hot and run extremely slow. It's not from doing anything intense, just from having maybe a few open things-- chrome, word, adobe reader. I was thinking about doing a complete factory reset. How can I go about doing this?

Wiping it won't affect the heating issue. To wipe it, you need a windows installation disc. You also need a driver disc.ph14 wrote:I need some computer help. How old is it, and do you have any pets?ph14 wrote:I need some computer help. My computer randomly decides to get really hot and run extremely slow. I've had to take apart multiple laptops and clean clumps of dust and cat hair off the heatsink. And if that's the problem, you need to do it before something gets fried.

I think I have all my original discs around here somewhere, so that shouldn't be a problem. But if it doesn't solve the issue I don't want to do it. What do you think I should do?beach_terror wrote: Wiping it won't affect the heating issue. To wipe it, you need a windows installation disc. You also need a driver disc.

About a year and a half old, I got it for law school. Yes, I do have pets. I'm a little nervous to take apart my laptop though.rinkrat19 wrote:How old is it, and do you have any pets?

Here are some suggestions:ph14 wrote:I need some computer help. My computer randomly decides to get really hot and run extremely slow. 1. Search the internet for a standard list of steps to help speed up your computer.
2. Run ant-virus to remove spyware. That's usually the culprit for a slow computer.
3. Upgrade to 8G of RAM. That should speed you up as well.
Personally, I'd buy a new computer before I did the factory reset. (if you can afford to do so)
A full factory reset might initially make it faster, but as you add programs and browse the internet, etc., it will likely slow down again. Plus, you need to make sure you an re-install programs like Microsoft Office without having to pay for them again. Given all of the time and headaches this might cause, that's why I suggest a new machine.

Upgrading from 4 to 8gb of ram isn't worth it. That's not going to solve the problem.

This is very likely your best bet. Most laptops are easy enough to take apart enough to get to the vents/fans. See if there are videos on YouTube.ph14 wrote:About a year and a half old, I got it for law school. Yes, I do have pets. Re: Computers for Law School 2011
Took it apart and cleaned the fan. It was dusty but not too bad. It hasn't solved the problem. Also, my laptop will drain when the lid is closed as if I am watching a movie or doing something intensive on the computer. I updated all the software and drivers and bought a new battery, but it didn't fix it. Anyone have any ideas?bk187 wrote:This is very likely your best bet. I've run anti-virus software: Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Anything else I need to do?Here are some suggestions:
