Congrats. But this is probably the least likely place for a 0L to be. I used xeoh's method to a certain extent first semester, and it was very successful, although I felt like I wasted a ton of time learning things in unnecessary detail or too far in advance for me to remember them.solidsnake wrote:Class ranks came out yesterday, I made top 1%. Re: Waiting for 1L grades...so much worse than waiting for LSATs
I spent a lot of extra time on what was sort of like a deferred investment in legal analysis and argumentation. It might have been overkill for the purposes of 1L exams, but I'd like to think that it set a solid foundation for a lifetime of meaningful legal practice. The tradeoffs were steep, unfortunately.mallard wrote:Congrats. But this is probably the least likely place for a 0L to be. Yeah, I do think in a way spending that extra time first semester helped me know what to focus on in the crunch second semester (when I did next to nothing).

Exactly. You unfortunately have to study dumb (inefficiently) to know what it means to study smart. What is challenging is that there aren't many second chances in 1L, and striving to minimize error doesn't really jive with the 'studying dumb to know what it means to study smart' premise.

One of our friends has all his grades but Contracts.... What? I have lawyering. That's it. I know! But another of our friends who has crim with that person doesn't have his crim grade. It's kinda bizarre. I have Lawyering and Contracts.mbw wrote:One of our friends has all his grades but Contracts.... What? I have lawyering. That's it. Better because it's outside your control, but worse because it's a waste of whiskey.booyakasha45 wrote:it was whiskey induced. better... or worse?mallard wrote:Gunner.booyakasha45 wrote:grade dream last night. I hope it's an accurate premonition.

congrats on the grades, dude. when i was a 1L, i definitely over-studied first semester -- "studied dumb" -- but i'd sure rather have done that than risk lower grades.solidsnake wrote:Exactly. Thanks. You were one of the high-scoring then-2Ls that I obsessively PM'd back when I was an 0L striver facing the risk and uncertainty of 1L looming ahead. Now, I'm open to PMs from 0Ls to pay it forward.steve_nash wrote:congrats on the grades, dude. when i was a 1L, i definitely over-studied first semester -- "studied dumb" -- but i'd sure rather have done that than risk lower grades.solidsnake wrote:Exactly. I'm still missing half my grades. You'd think a month would be long enough to grade a few tests.underachiever wrote:Ha, same grades again.....got love law school

Thats just awful...I mean it happens at every school, but its bulls*ht 50 year olds with Yale/Harvard JDs cant have a little respect for the people who pay their overly inflated salaries....and we are not so much paying for teaching but so they can write bullshit academic articles 99.9% will have no effect on the world. (As you can tell I have no strong feelings about academia)caoyun wrote:I'm still missing half my grades. i mean, they've gotta grade 60+ 20+ page finals. if you want them to do a decent job, that'll take a lot of time.caoyun wrote:I'm still missing half my grades. You'd think a month would be long enough to grade a few tests.underachiever wrote:Ha, same grades again.....got love law school

It's a relative thing too, though.enygma wrote: i mean, they've gotta grade 60+ 20+ page finals. if you want them to do a decent job, that'll take a lot of time.
My crim professor is a federal judge. That is, he has a full-time day job. Yet he still managed not only to grade 108 3.5 hour in-class exams in 4 weeks, but also write comments on all of them and produce a 30 page written commentary showing what he gave points for and how he would have analyzed the questions.
My property and elective professors didn't write commentaries, but managed to grade their exams within 3 weeks.
My conlaw professor, on the other hand, has had six weeks in which she has had presumably nothing to do but grade 108 4 hour in-class exams. Still nothing.

Also waiting for one last grade from an exam that I took over a month ago. I'm really borderline right now so this one grade will place me either in the top quarter, top third, or only top half of my class. Sigh.

Re: Waiting for 1L grades...so much worse than waiting for LSATs
The one grade I'm waiting on at this point was a class with only 15 students. It really shouldn't take more than a month to grade 15 or so 20 page exams.enygma wrote:i mean, they've gotta grade 60+ 20+ page finals. if you want them to do a decent job, that'll take a lot of time.caoyun wrote:I'm still missing half my grades.
