is it ok to be pissed with A-'s?? I've got three so far and honestly I'm a little upset. For some reason it almost feels worse than a B. What the fuck do i have to do to get a regular god damn A.

my property professor this semester, it's her policy to only give 1 solid "A" (one, uno, einz, odin) out of an 80 student section. She fills up her A to A- % requirement all in "A-"s.

I got 2 "B+"s that were minor stupid mistakes away form "A-"s, I'd kill for even just one to be an A-, would change my GPA substantially

There is only so much a professor like that can do at NU. A maxed-out curve at NU is:

A+ 7%
A 15%
A- 15%
B+ 30%
B 23%
B- 10%

Average = 3.41

A minimum curve is:

A+ 3%
A 12%
A- 10%
B+ 15%
B 30%
B- 15%
C+ 7.5%
C 7.5%
---
Average = 3.10

Assuming 3 of your 4 professors give the typical grade of 3.35, and one of your professors maxes things out while one of someone else's minimizes the curve, then the lucky person's section will have an average GPA of 3.29 and the unlucky person's section will have an average GPA of 3.36. Assuming this happens only 1 semester of 1L (you'd have to be very lucky or very unlucky to get more than one such professor), you're talking about 3.32 versus 3.35. Pretty minuscule difference.

This is why I prefer the grading system here. It is numbers based rather than grades based. The profs can only give between an 86.5-87.5 mean, and almost all give an 87.5 mean. Sure, some profs go crazy and give out a 100 and some high 90s while others make 95 or so the top grade, but you can't see these big differences in the average GPA of a class.

This is why I prefer the grading system here. It is numbers based rather than grades based. The profs can only give between an 86.5-87.5 mean, and almost all give an 87.5 mean. Sure, some profs go crazy and give out a 100 and some high 90s while others make 95 or so the top grade, but you can't see these big differences in the average GPA of a class.

The lower bound example I gave is for a professor you maxed out the number of C-range grades. Professors are not required to give any C-range grades, and indeed most (including Holly's Civ Pro professor) will only do so for someone who didn't try on the exam. There are always a couple of those each year.

In practice professors will play with either maxing out A/A- range grades, or maxing out B/B- range grades. That yields a range somewhere between 3.25 and 3.35. This doesn't hurt median students much, but really helps good students because the curve mandates a certain number of A+/A grades. Having some professors give out 100s and others 95s can really bone you if you're shooting for law review.

He's a very non-traditional professor (entrepreneur, very very successful, etc) and he's on tenure. The rest of the professors are sane. He believes in "justice" when grading- He doesn't give any C's, rather he just gives B-'s, A LOT of B's, some B+'s, and 4 A-'s. It sucks but I see where he is coming from (one C can destroy a person's chance at pretty much anything).

Oh well, I'm happy with my grades.
