I went with the T420 from Amazon, shipped today

I used a Thinkpad when I was working big4 auditing, the keyboard will hold up to a nice 14-15 hour panic session when you need to finish everything before you file a client's 10K, so it passed the test in my eyes.

one more thing: I initially called them to cancel my order with the reason being that the expected shipping date was too far in the future. They offered to upgrade my shipping for free to ups 2 day... or something like that.

You did it wrong. Always buy it with the Barnes and Noble Gold Education discount. It's the most you'll get without calling in and haggling with a salesman.

I ended up using this a second ago, bought a T420. Estimated ship date is the 26'th...which would be 3 days before my classes start. I'm really hoping they can get it out before that.

Only thing I'm iffy on is that I got a 3 yr battery warranty which pushed me above the 1000 dollar range. I hated doing it, but the battery on my last laptop (The one I'm using now actually) was terrible and ended up dying during a presentation once. It ultimately kicked out for good during my senior year. It was undergrad so it didn't really matter but I don't want to deal with it during law school. Worst comes to worst, I'll just be given a free battery at some point.

Can anyone help me pick out a new laptop? I'm looking for a PC in the 15.6" range, and my budget is up to $1000. Any recommendations? I want something high quality, preferably with a nice keyboard.

So I was looking at the Thinkpad T420 and it doesn't appear to have a backlit keyboard or an HDMI port. Any recommendations on laptops that have those features?

You don't need a back lit keyboard. It has a think light that illuminates the entire keyboard and the surrounding work area. Basically superior to any back lit keyboard if you're doing work in a dark area. My T420 does have VGA and display port out. A display port to hdmi cable is basically the same price as buying an hdmi cable. So it's not an issue. Display Port handles audio and video like hdmi.

Am I the only one who thinks that Thinkpads are ugly as sin? I'm pretty sure I had a clunky Thinkpad back in the 90s and it looked exactly the same as the new ones do now. It's like if Toyota were still making Camrys with the 1998 body style.

Personally, I could care less about how it looks. If it really concerns someone, just get the Edge model. It's not going to survive a bullet wound, but it'll live through repeated punches in the face.

I don't want a laptop that screams, "STEAL ME FOR EZ $$$."

Besides, you don't get a Thinkpad because you want to rub your status symbols into people's faces. You get one because you want to get the job done.

At first they told me it should take 6 days, but when I called today they said the part wouldn't be in from Asia until September 19th... I can't realistically wait that long to get my computer back, so I guess I'll buy a new one... any suggetions?

A Dell latitude with an onsite warranty?

How old is your laptop? I'd be asking for a new machine if they can't fix it sooner, and threatening a credit card charge back if they don't oblige.

If you have Thinkplus warranty, it's onsite and unless you have an R-series or something "exotic" like that, it's 4 hours - 1 day usually. The warranty stipulates it.
