Waiting on one more grade but based off numbers last year it looks like I will only be in the 25-30% range of my class (top). 2 members of my study group will be in the top 10% while a couple more will be around 50%. I am the median in the group. However I just feel dumb now. Legitimately dumb. I can't get focused on this semester that just started because of it.

Dumb like a fox. You outperformed 7 out of 10 people in your section.MKX wrote:Waiting on one more grade but based off numbers last year it looks like I will only be in the 25-30% range of my class (top). 2 members of my study group will be in the top 10% while a couple more will be around 50%. You should feel dumb for typing this, not for your performance. Seriously you're in the top third of the class at least. You're goodMKX wrote:Waiting on one more grade but based off numbers last year it looks like I will only be in the 25-30% range of my class (top). 2 members of my study group will be in the top 10% while a couple more will be around 50%. natural to feel that way though - i feel the same (however unjustified) in a similar situation at a t10. you just gotta put it to the side and know that objectively you're doing well (and anyway, how well you are doing in law school doesn't necessarily reflect how 'smart' you are one way or the other)

you should probably wait until that last grade hits before feeling anythingMKX wrote:Waiting on one more grade but based off numbers last year it looks like I will only be in the 25-30% range of my class (top). 2 members of my study group will be in the top 10% while a couple more will be around 50%. Are you still in that 25-30% range? If so, that's good. You did better than 70% of your classmates. Be proud of that, your hard work paid off.MKX wrote:Hit. If not, it isn't the end of the world. You got into law school, you'll get out of law school, and you'll pass the bar. A few years in and no one will care what your grades where your first semester of your first year.
Hell, if you talk to your profs and figure out where to improve, there's no reason you wont be able to pull yourself up. You'll need to be in it for the long haul, but first semester grades don't determine where you'll be at the end of three years.
So chin up, and get back into the grind. Hard work pays dividends.

Thank you, this helps. I'll be in the top 30-40 i believe. Closer to 30 based off last year. I have some decent connections in mid law which I'd be content with, but was hoping for big law. Going to really have to make a come back.jayessbee wrote:Are you still in that 25-30% range? If so, that's good. You did better than 70% of your classmates. I don't think I can write my brief. I've procrastinated on it for two weeks and now I only have a week and a half left and I haven't even done the research and I don't even think I know how to start. I keep freaking out and crying and then not starting on my actual work

I have a really hard time sitting down and just starting stuff like this too (it's especially hard to sit down and start writing, but it can be tough with research as well). I know this isn't like, original or anything, but you really need to just sit down and start. Open up Westlaw and search for something. I promise you as soon as you start you'll feel a lot better and it won't be nearly as bad as you think it will be.thisiswater wrote:I don't think I can write my brief. I think you also have plenty of time. It's not optimal, but a few days to do research and synthesize, a few days to write and then a day or so to revise is plenty of time. You're ok. Just force yourself to start.

I know that feeling very, very well. I did the same thing on my memo and ended up having to pull two all-nighters to get it done.thisiswater wrote:I don't think I can write my brief. Just take a deep breath, and start working in chunks. Don't second-guess yourself at every turn, either. You can do it.

Was in the same position as you. Open a word document. Fill out your headings and stuff. Then, go on LexisNexis. Do the quizzes and stuff for points. Close LexisNexis, open WestLaw. Search about the issue broadly, go to secondary sources, let someone else's research guide you. You have plenty of time. Don't work yourself to death. Go see your professor as much as you can, with real questions and concerns.thisiswater wrote:I don't think I can write my brief. But just opening the document and writing your headings and cover page and shit always helps me.
