Which makes total sense. 1L is not an environment that fosters positive feedback. You toil away in the dark for months to culminate a singular 4 hour period where everything has to come together. Many weeks the most positive feedback you'll receive is a grudging response to a sufficient cold call answer.

There are a couple ways to find recognition and try to gauge how you're progressing. One is to write a really strong first memo, but that will only be a handful of kids -- I wasn't one of them, mine was pretty awful. Another way is to attend TA sessions (if available) and participate. My Civ Pro TA became invaluable as a source of support and/or constructive criticism on my issue spotting/analysis/ect. Another is to participate in a non-class activity; for example, my coach's responses and help on my moot court briefs in the fall were probably the only positive reflection on my writing. Even a study group, while only the opinions of peers and not authority, can be constructive later in the semester. But if you can't do stuff like this, then yes it will be a dearth of feedback that's the structure of the system.

Just took a first practice exam and am now realizing that IRAC'ing doesn't feel all as easy as it simply seemed at first.

Not necessarily imperative to actually structure exam answers strictly by IRAC. Some of my good grades I literally word dumped with little structure, just sort of kept tossing new issues in as I went. Obviously different story if your teacher tells you they care about well organized stuff.

Do I kill myself on the open memo for LRW at the chance of above median or just resign myself to the 2-credit B(-) and kill myself for "real" exam prep.

Obviously if you have to choose, its the more credit classes. But why can't you do well on both?

Killed it in legal writing today. Had to talk to a professor one on one as if she was a senior partner and discuss whether our client had a case. Referenced the case law, told her likely outcome and answered every question she threw my way. At the conclusion of the meeting she recommended I do trial advocacy as I am well spoken and make people feel comfortable. This has been my first law school win as everything else has been mediocre. (Even a no point date with a 2L). Let go of stress and let's get it ya'll.

They aren't exclusive. Depending on when the memo is due, it is completely feasible to do well at both. Also, you don't need to "kill yourself" for the freaking open memo. It isn't a 24/7 assignment, you don't need to put that much work in. Calm down 1Ls.

Seriously, if your "killing yourself" at all I think you're probably doing it wrong.

Had my first breakdown last week...and I think I just recovered from it.

I got my K midterm back and bombed it. Luckily it wasn't graded but I felt like a moron. Doesn't help that I think I understand congrats when Im reading and then I get into class and I'm all confused.

Im so nervous for finals. Being a lawyer has been m dream forever, and sometimes I feel like I don't have the brain for it.

it takes a while to get a hang of IRAC. but you will use IRAC on the bar exam, so its good to get used to it now. Easy way to do it is literally write/ think to yourself T
I- The Issue is ( what is it in 1 sentence)

R-The Rule is ( go from wide to narrow.... i.e. The UCC Governs ( insert issue here) an (issue) occurs is ( what is the definition of it). Case/ line of thought that gave you the test/ defn. in order to find out what it is ( explain test- if more than 1 element use () to simply define element). this entire paragraph should be about 6 sentences.

A- Analysis/ application.. apply test to facts. in law school argue both sides ( but on barf exam just apply facts to rule), using facts and theory- if your prof likes theory--- best way is to do a few practice exams and then talk to prof about it.

C- conclusion. Thus, Therefore, ( what is your conclusion.. who should , is likely or may prevail.

remember, one issue one little heading. IRAC through, move on. can go by issues or by parties, depending on class.

once you are done with final, don't talk about it.

Thanks for the help. After looking back through it after getting some comments and feedback back I actually felt a lot better about it. I think in the immediacy of finishing I felt like it was so jumbled and all over the place that it was noncomprehensive, but I actually did do it pretty similarly to how you explained and will take into consideration as well when working back through things.

ETA: Do you think that it will help, with IRAC'ing at least early on, to go back over practice exams already done and reformat the answer/reIRAC it so there isn't the stress of getting it right, but rather, allowing focus on IRAC itself? Or does this seem like a total waste of time.

Do we do IRAC for every class? I can't imagine doing it for civil procedure or criminal law.
