last year, class of 250 students, top 5 percent was around 3.7
if this year's class has 200 students - what is the likely impact on gpa percentiles?
If the distribution of grades is the same, why would it change? The number of people in the top 5 per cent would change but I don't think the percentage itself would.
Like I said, I am bad with numbers - but the thinking is this - The curve/distribution per class remains the same....but if there are 50 less students in the class, then the liklihood that a student gets A's in every class seems like it would go down as well.
So, say last year's class had 100 people in it with a curve that requires 10% get a 3.7. Say this year's class has 50 people with the same grading distribution. The number of people getting 3.7's is less this year (10 and 5, respectively), but the likelihood of getting an 3.7 is exactly the same (10%) each year, assuming the same distribution is used. Make sense?
Edit: I thought you were talking about an individual class rather than a total GPA.

If
top 25% ≥ 3.11
top 10% ≥ 3.45
where do I stand at 3.33 ?

Top 15-20
To the post above that, with a smaller sample size the curve won't be as smooth, but it shouldn't be radically different. In the abaence of further data just figure on it being more or less the same

B+ in torts.
I'd be more cool with it if not for the abysmal civ pro grade behind it.

hoos89 wrote:That's not how probability works though. Sure the likelihood of getting a certain gpa might be the same, but with fewer people that's fewer chances of getting it as well and it's statistically more likely that you will see swings one way or the other at the very top or bottom. Think of it this way: the more times you flip a coin, the closer you will get to exactly 50% heads (regression to the mean). If you have 1000 people in the class and a 10% chance for a specific outcome, it is more likely that 10% of the people will have that outcome than if you have 200 people in a class and the same chance for that outcome. Just because the probability is 10% doesn't mean the outcome will be 10%.
Not disagreeing with you, but would it be
that much different an outcome? I mean, I would think 200 people would still yield a percentage that's not a gross departure from the expected percentage. I'm not a statistician by any means, though. I might be wrong.
Edit: scooped.

Still nothing from my Ks prof. I'm guessing movement over the weekend is extremely unlikely?

I'm not sure. There are still sections out there without grades. Grades went up a little later than this, but considering it is Friday, I don't have much hope.

My Civ Pro exam number popped up about an hour ago. Hoping someone is still working at the registar to post it.
Also got the email from my K's prof that grades won't be out until next Friday at the latest (which means next Friday).

Congrats, dude!! Not surprised you're killing it. You'd better remember I've been nice to you when I ask you for a job in five years.

Tiago, you have rainbows and unicorns elective and the 3 core classes with me. I think that's an unfair advantage. Calling a penalty right there.

Tiago and stillwater KILLING IT. Congrats dudes! Also, still, does your school give 4.33 for an A+? If so, and LRW is fewer credits than substantive courses, then you have over a 4.0!

My prof is already 2 days late which sucks because I will probably start the spring semester without all of the grades.
