I prefer my i5 laptop with a custom build AMD phenom II X4 965, ATI 6870, 4G ram, and 23 inch monitor. Set those two babies up and you're good to go with screen space, one note linkage between the lappy and the desktop, and maximum outline viewage for takehome exams

Re: Computers for Law School 2011
The Asus u30sd that was mentioned earlier with the xbox seems like a pretty good deal considering what it can do. I just got a Asus u46e at Bestbuy and it's a pretty good laptop. Can get over 10 hours easily on Balanced battery mode and with the wifi turned off. Both are under $800 and considered to be up there by critics. I was looking at Vaios and Thinkpads but the Asus can do pretty much everything those can and has what you need for a school laptop.

Re: Computers for Law School 2011
Ordered a Lenovo X220 last night.
Operating System: Genuine Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
Processor: Intel® Core™ i5-2410M (2.30GHz)
Memory: 4GB DDR3 at 1333MHz
Drives: 320GB 7200 rpm SATA hard drive
Graphics & Video:
* Intel HD 3000 Graphics
* 12.5” LED HD Display (1366x768)
* 16:9 aspect ratio
* HD720p resolution, wide view angle, low light sensitive, fixed focus camera
Communications: 802.11 b/g/n Intel 1000 Wireless LAN & Bluetooth 3.0
Power Supply: 6 cell lithium Ion battery
Additional Information:
* (W X D X H) 12.0” X 8.13” X 0.75 - 1.36”
* 3 Year limited warranty / 1Year battery
* Weight: 3.31 lbs [feeling this]
And it comes with a free Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 so I can uninstall Norton right away.
With tax and shipping: $1,086.24
For those who purchased or are in the know, is there a big disparity between the 6 cell and 9 cell battery. It appears the 6 cell might be good enough for an entire day of class [9 hr span] without needing a charge.

Re: Computers for Law School 2011
This pretty lookin deal just popped up on slickdeals:
On lenovo.com,
"Search "Z370" and click on the 2nd laptop shown from the top "view Z series". Choose the $599 laptop, add to cart and apply the discount code below.
Use DEALIGG10C for 10% off
on sale for $599.99 - 10% with coupon = $539.10
Lenovo IdeaPad Z370 Laptop Specs:
Lenovo Z370 (102522U)
2nd generation Intel® Core™ i5-2410M Processor ( 2.30GHz 1333MHz 3MB )
13.3" HD Glare with integrated camera 1366x768
500GB 5400
4 GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz
Lenovo BGN Wireless
DVD Recordable (Dual Layer)
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64
One year parts and labor (system battery: one year)
Intel Integrated HD Graphics 3000"
You can also get an i3 version for $450. Ideapad is more for the consumer whereas thinkpad is more for the business/school minded person. Personally, I like this one better cause it doesnt have the annoying nipple in the middle of the keyboard, but still has the same island chicklet keyboard lenovo is famous for.

Why someone would buy a Lenovo and not get a Thinkpad is beyond me.

I think most people here are unaware that the difference in price is the consequence of difference in build material quality and reliability.beach_terror wrote:Why someone would buy a Lenovo and not get a Thinkpad is beyond me.

I don't see a point in getting something top of the line when I'm probably going to replace it in two years anyway.zeth006 wrote:I think most people here are unaware that the difference in price is the consequence of difference in build material quality and reliability.beach_terror wrote:Why someone would buy a Lenovo and not get a Thinkpad is beyond me.

I'd rather be using something top-of-the-line for 2 years, myself...adonai wrote:I don't see a point in getting something top of the line when I'm probably going to replace it in two years anyway.zeth006 wrote:I think most people here are unaware that the difference in price is the consequence of difference in build material quality and reliability.beach_terror wrote:Why someone would buy a Lenovo and not get a Thinkpad is beyond me.

Then buy from a company who produces such laptops. If you're buying a Lenovo, you're buying a Thinkpad because of the build quality. You don't go to FalconNW and ask for a computer that doesn't include all the state of the art gaming stuff.adonai wrote:I don't see a point in getting something top of the line when I'm probably going to replace it in two years anyway.zeth006 wrote:I think most people here are unaware that the difference in price is the consequence of difference in build material quality and reliability.beach_terror wrote:Why someone would buy a Lenovo and not get a Thinkpad is beyond me.

Re: Computers for Law School 2011
Apparently Lenovo is a company who "produces such laptops" if the ideapad is really that bad. I haven't found any laptops below $450 that doesn't use core2 technology. The ideapad seems like a good value to me from a reputable company. I'm all about best bang for the buck cause I don't have a g to drop on a computer that will be outdated in six months.beach_terror wrote:Then buy from a company who produces such laptops. OneNote linkage? could you please explain how this works. Sounds interesting. I would like to keep a netbook on the side so this may help...deebs wrote:I prefer my i5 laptop with a custom build AMD phenom II X4 965, ATI 6870, 4G ram, and 23 inch monitor. The reason why Thinkpads are popular is that they'll easily last 3x longer than "normal" laptops. Look of Craigslist at the people selling their old ones. The main reason is, "I need something that runs something newer than XP."adonai wrote:Apparently Lenovo is a company who "produces such laptops" if the ideapad is really that bad. Or the majority were purchased by corporations and therefore comparatively few are sold on craigslist.ResolutePear wrote: The reason why Thinkpads are popular is that they'll easily last 3x longer than "normal" laptops. Er, that reinforces my argument? The fact that there are many more surviving thinkpads from early 2000s versus other laptops says something.albanach wrote:Or the majority were purchased by corporations and therefore comparatively few are sold on craigslist.ResolutePear wrote: The reason why Thinkpads are popular is that they'll easily last 3x longer than "normal" laptops. eBay has almost three times as many working P4 Dell Latitudes compared to Thinkpads. Does that mean Latitudes have even better longevity?ResolutePear wrote: Er, that reinforces my argument? The fact that there are many more surviving thinkpads from early 2000s versus other laptops says something.

Probably, though I have not seen stats breaking down sales by product line.Bill Cosby wrote: Way more Latitudes were sold than Thinkpads.
What I was getting at is 3rd party sales on Craigslist is hardly a good way to measure quality or reliability.

Well, I'd entertain a better method since you suggested one in hand.albanach wrote:Probably, though I have not seen stats breaking down sales by product line.Bill Cosby wrote: Way more Latitudes were sold than Thinkpads.

I think it's pretty straightforward actually. Any new computer is powerful enough for Law School. A student has two options as I see it. Buy cheap, take care of a more fragile laptop and hope it survives. Probably self-insure, running to Best Buy or something if your laptop croaks during finals. At a given price point, an IdeaPad from Lenovo, Inspiron from Dell, or a Pavilion from HP will probably all be similar in quality and components.ResolutePear wrote:

Alternatively, buy a business class computer like a ThinkPad from Lenovo, a Latitude from Dell or an EliteBook from HP. Given you can (I think) only borrow once for a laptop during the three years, pay for an extended on-site warranty. Again, at a price point, computers from these lines are probably pretty similar.

I can tell you first hand that Dell Latitude's are gigantic pieces of shit and ThinkPad's are infinitely better. You seem dense though, so go for it bro.albanach wrote:I think it's pretty straightforward actually. Any new computer is powerful enough for Law School. A student has two options as I see it.
