I prefer my i5 laptop with a custom build AMD phenom II X4 965, ATI 6870, 4G ram, and 23 inch monitor. Set those two babies up and you're good to go with screen space, one note linkage between the lappy and the desktop, and maximum outline viewage for takehome exams

The Asus u30sd that was mentioned earlier with the xbox seems like a pretty good deal considering what it can do. I just got a Asus u46e at Bestbuy and it's a pretty good laptop. Can get over 10 hours easily on Balanced battery mode and with the wifi turned off. Both are under $800 and considered to be up there by critics. I was looking at Vaios and Thinkpads but the Asus can do pretty much everything those can and has what you need for a school laptop.

You can also get an i3 version for $450. Ideapad is more for the consumer whereas thinkpad is more for the business/school minded person. Personally, I like this one better cause it doesnt have the annoying nipple in the middle of the keyboard, but still has the same island chicklet keyboard lenovo is famous for.

Apparently Lenovo is a company who "produces such laptops" if the ideapad is really that bad. I haven't found any laptops below $450 that doesn't use core2 technology. The ideapad seems like a good value to me from a reputable company. I'm all about best bang for the buck cause I don't have a g to drop on a computer that will be outdated in six months.

I think it's pretty straightforward actually. Any new computer is powerful enough for Law School. A student has two options as I see it. Buy cheap, take care of a more fragile laptop and hope it survives. Probably self-insure, running to Best Buy or something if your laptop croaks during finals. At a given price point, an IdeaPad from Lenovo, Inspiron from Dell, or a Pavilion from HP will probably all be similar in quality and components.

Alternatively, buy a business class computer like a ThinkPad from Lenovo, a Latitude from Dell or an EliteBook from HP. Given you can (I think) only borrow once for a laptop during the three years, pay for an extended on-site warranty. Again, at a price point, computers from these lines are probably pretty similar.
