PANIC!! 1L Fall Grade Waiting Thread - 2012 Forum

Ah yes, sorry, I didn't look at grades until after holidays. Torts got medianish (B+, it was mostly my weakest material, but I fest up after test I struggled with that particular test) Prop and Civ Pro got A-, roughly top 25%. I didn't do hard calculations. Got screwed by legal writing, which is worth 2 credits, and got a B. Dragged GPA down to top third. Overall, happy, considering I knew I did bad in torts.

Yeah but you were predicting being #1 in torts. more importantly, this illustrates a larger concept. there's a large swath of people each predicting all sorts of outcomes on mainly bullshit. when grades come back, people who receive higher grades insist their bullshit should be considered an iron-clad theory and people who do poorly invent an alternate bullshit to explain their performance. corollary to this, people who receive higher grades are more likely to insist their grades were due to their performance and people who score lower are more likely to insist the whole thing is arbitrary (which at H, it really is, for most of the class outside a few legit superstars). we know for a fact some professors don't even bother to read the shit.

in any case, the moral of the story is to mostly shut up and wait for your grades.

I said I could be competing for a top spot, I never said I was going to be #1. And that was before I took the test. My prediction was because on all the practice tests, I was killing it (and during class, when we discussed practice test, I had gotten all the issues he wanted) trust me, I had almost all of torts down cold. When test came, we had a lot of 402a crap and misrepresentation stuff that I didn't get a chance to practice as much, because it was the last two weeks of class, and therefore my answers were crap on that. I still did good, just not great. And I came here and told the thread I didn't do well after the test anyway.

this is untrue. if i get strong grades, i will be the first to admit my exams were pure bullshit. i've reread them both sober and unsober and they are bullshit. in my limited experience the people who think their shit is gospel tend to not do as well. i'd imagine it's linked to counterargument making ability.

Okay so I was looking at the post graduation class rank figures (which have more grade inflation) and psyched myself out. For 1L I'm sitting "ok." Met my goal. Feeling much better.

Grades in for me: A Torts, B Property, B+ Civ Pro, A Legal Writing. Puts me right at a 3.5. School curves to a B and based on last year's 1L class top 25% was above a 3.38 so I can probably say I'm above that although our curve is coming out later this week.

Pretty happy with grades, but want to try and do better this semester.

Two questions: Do employers look mostly at class rank or do grades in specific 1L classes "matter" more than others (ie better to have a higher grade in Civ Pro than Property)? Also, I know it varies, but is the general trend that how you do first semester is fairly indicative of how you do the next semester?

Depends on firm. A firm that does products liability might see an A in torts and get excited, while a form that works with estates might see an A in property as groovy. Others just want Latin titles and high ranked schools next to your name.

cool. not really trying to pick on you, just thinking out loud, really. i mean even when you "win" this shit, you haven't really won anything. there are plenty of top third students etc, striking out and bottom students scoring sweet gigs; smart lawyers being pushed out and dumb ones making partner. it's an endless series of crapshoots. good luck, brother.

how big is the URM boost? is it like law school admissions in that a bottom third URM can compete with top third non-URM? if so, the above/below median stuff is really kind of misleading, because the median number become a superficial cut of for above-below median.

if you bring a firm a 2 million dollar a year client because you happened to stumble across them at starbucks, that isn't performance related? is performance just law based? will an autistic but 100% precise brain surgeon be a top brain surgeon? how many 4.0 majors would lose out on jobs to a 2.0 with a family connection? the fact law firms pay any attention to gpa makes it different from many fields.
