Just be honest.
Explain to them that you only listen to theremin music.

Baseball is like crack for math nerds. I can vouch to that.

I retract my assumption that you are able to distinguish things. Any assumption of subtlety was incorrect on my part, and for that, I am truly apologetic.PARTY wrote:not putting in effort to acquire, listen to, and categorize music does not make one socially inept.TurtlesAllTheWayDown wrote:No, but not listening to music at all and listing watching sports as an opiate for the masses (pretty hyperbolic, don't you think) smacks of social ineptness. Additionally, using TLS to figure out how to answer such a benign question as "who is your favorite band" doesnt really speak well to a person who can easily navigate most social situations.PARTY wrote:does not watching sports and not liking shitty popular music make one socially inept?TurtlesAllTheWayDown wrote:Disregard my last post. I didn't realize OP also stated that watching sports is the opiate of the masses. Given this new information, I would say that you should just carry around an index card that says, "I'm socially inept, please don't try to talk to me" and silently present it to anyone friendly/foolish enough to try to ensnare you in a conversation. Problem solved.
Surely you are able to see the difference between what I stated and how you interpretted it, right?
sporting events (and everything that comes along with them) are opiates for the masses, as it were. (bread and circuses, anyone?)
and using the internet to crowd source questions that one is either curious about or attempting to troll through does not imply social ineptness, either.
OP may be irregular, but 'tis pretty strong to assume the 'bergers.

lol, yes it does. Not having the slightest clue what bands are "acceptable" to a broad audience probably means one has been living under a rock. And asking an anonymous law school forum does nothing to dispel that assumption. I mean, there's some pretty huge fucking bands out there (The Beatles? The Rolling Stones?), that are big in both the music world and pop culture. You'd probably have to make an effort/live under a rock to avoid being exposed to these bands at some level.PARTY wrote:not putting in effort to acquire, listen to, and categorize music does not make one socially inept.TurtlesAllTheWayDown wrote:No, but not listening to music at all and listing watching sports as an opiate for the masses (pretty hyperbolic, don't you think) smacks of social ineptness. The sports comment is also pretty bad. You can hate sports, and rail about how sports add nothing to society as you sip on your organic free-trade latte, but the fact is that sports are fucking everywhere. And they're a pretty common interview topic, not to mention a common topic in everyday discussion.

There are plenty of people my age, 21, that don't like the Beatles. I'm not sure about olds.

In all seriousness, if you're uncomfortable referencing GWAR!!!, tell people you love Kraftwerk. Those who know who this is will think you're hip. Those who don't will later Google them and think you're hip. You can't lose.

Or Autobaun. It's best practice to say your favorite band is a movie reference to a real band.KellyFan2000 wrote:In all seriousness, if you're uncomfortable referencing GWAR!!!, tell people you love Kraftwerk. I bonded with an interviewer at OCI talking about death metal and Ted Leo and I still didn't get a callback, so OP I don't think it matters much.

NMH is a money suggestion. Other suggestions that are cool without being uber-hipster but not so pop as to get you mocked: State Radio, Spoon, Calexico.

I think this is my favorite thread ever, because I can tell many of the posters are fellow NPR listeners and fans of The Big Lebowski. My kind of people.
