Re: 2L exam prep thread
I still have a few options to play out, and there will be a few options in the spring. I also "know people" in my legal market and I could land a less desirable personal injury firm job if worse comes to worse. It's the kind of stuff that won't play out until 3L though, but in the meantime I think ensuring Order of the Coif is the smartest thing. I'm also doing a 3cr externship with the EPA (clinics here are like 8 credits or something) next semester. Maybe I'm crazy for attacking 2L the way I am? My brain dont work so good no more.IAFG wrote:Not to tell you shit you already know, but bro, if your rank didn't get you a job at OCI already, it's probably a better choice to do things that will make you more marketable, even if it risks your GPA a little.beach_terror wrote:We don't get grades for them so my rank would fall.Helmholtz wrote:Clinics?beach_terror wrote: Why isn't the second year "practical" instead of theoretical.

well i am a little confused about why your rank would drop for P/F credit? are graded credits "worth" more?

Confused about this too. GPA = grade point average, no? Is your rank based on who takes more graded credits? (and how are externships different than clerkships in this way?)

Re: 2L exam prep thread
I think the P/F credits just don't weight into class ranking. You just get the credit for it, but the class rank determinations are done on the approved classes. So my GPA wouldn't drop because of it, but my rank would because less credits are going toward the rank as opposed to taking full credits via standard LS classes. Otherwise, someone at #1 would be able to squat it by taking all P/F classes.IAFG wrote:well i am a little confused about why your rank would drop for P/F credit? are graded credits "worth" more?

I am still confused. So rank is not estimated by GPA?

Dawg, I'd say fuck my grades, try to get a term clerkship for a small firm, and hope that they can hire me or know someone that can.

I guess the best way to describe it is rank is calculated through curved law school classes. So I'm taking 14 credits next semester, but 3 are from an externship, so 11 go toward my class rank because the externship stuff isn't part of the rank calculation. I get credit toward graduating through it, obviously.Helmholtz wrote:I am still confused. So rank is not estimated by GPA?

That's basically in my back pocket for this summer if need be. I agree entirely with you.Grizz wrote:Dawg, I'd say fuck my grades, try to get a term clerkship for a small firm, and hope that they can hire me or know someone that can.

So that only hurts you in the sense that there is more pressure to do will with your 11 credits. It doesn't actually count against you in any way right? So a 4.0 with 14 credits = 4.0 with 11 credits, no? Am I missing something?beach_terror wrote:I guess the best way to describe it is rank is calculated through curved law school classes. Yeah, but a 4.0 with 14 real credits > a 4.0 with 11 real credits.quiver wrote:So that only hurts you in the sense that there is more pressure to do will with your 11 credits. I'd ask someone before planning your curriculum around it too much, if it's literally just a tie-breaker.beach_terror wrote:I HAVE NO IDEA, LEAVE ME ALONE, NUMBERS CONFUSE ME but yeah I think so?Helmholtz wrote:

I mean, for sure, you can get your grades up higher with 14 hours of A, but it might be easier to get 6 hours of A and 8 hours of P/F.

Re: 2L exam prep thread
Accidentally posted it in the 2L no motivation forum, don't really know how to move that post so just reposting it here in the correct thread:
Does anyone have any suggestions for the quickest way to essentially learn Business Associations an Fed Tax in the span of 3 weeks? Focused on jobs for way too much of the semester after striking out at OCI (T14 school) and then depression/being sick a lot set in afterward, have maybe 30% of the reading done in either class, just want to end up being at a 3.1+ or higher for the semester. Is it possible? Any recommendations/tips on essentially learning a lot of a semester's worth of classes in a 2-4 week period for finals would be greatly appreciated. Feel like I know jackshit in my classes from this semester, grades going down would be the death knell on already dim job prospects

Fed Tax is going to be brutal man...not sure what to tell you about that one. Try to find a good outline and focus on learning the easy/medium stuff really well. Is the exam MC or Essay or combo?
IMO, Business Associations is a really easy class. Grab a good outline a churn through practice problems. Did you do well or like torts? Business Associations is just a rich man's torts. Rather than physical injury, you have damage to a balance sheet or a lost opportunity. It's all negligence: Duty, breach, causation, damages. Make a list of "trigger" events that should grab your attention on exams (1) vote (2) securities purchase/sale (3) purchase from insider (4) an employee acting outside their role (5) a director that didn't disclose a material fact (6) bickering among partners etc.
I am in somewhat of the same boat as you. The job hunt took a lot out of me, but the worst thing you can do is be overwhelmed by the largeness of it all. Instead, take it in chunks. Block off your calendar by sections you plan to review -- 2 hours followed by a 30 min break. Try to get a week to just work on practice exams.
Not saying it's going to be fun, but it's plenty doable. I'd focus on tax if I were you. Tax has lots of wrong answers that are intuitively right. You can bullshit your way to a B+ fairly easily, particularly if it's an essay exam.

Re: 2L exam prep thread
Thanks for the advice! Tax is going to be a combo of both MC and essay, practice exams aren't up yet but I should soon be able to see what the ratio is of MC to essays. Really liked torts, and was enjoying BA but just got caught up ni the other stuff. I've got about 3.5 weeks to learn BA and about 2.5 to learn tax, have one other substantive class and one BS class, fairly screwed in those but those exams should be easier than BA/Tax. Thanks again, and if anyone else has some advice, just keep it coming, just hoping to survive this semester with a 3.1+ and then just getting motivation back and trying to forget the dim job prospects and do well next semesterOmerta wrote:Fed Tax is going to be brutal man...not sure what to tell you about that one. tabbed the shit out of the tax code the past couple of days, currently cross-referencing the syllabus to the e&e (and reading /doing the problems), reading parts of chirelstein if the e&e isn't clear.
is it even worth it to do the casebook problems if i have no answer key??

I'm looking at secured transactions and all I can think to do for this exam is know the statute and the stress points in it that create room for argument, which are relatively few and far between. Am I missing something?
