Chicago-Kent Class of 2014
Surprised that there isn't one made yet for Kent. Not a 100% sure that i'll be there in the fall but the chances are going up everyday.
Whats everyone doing about housing? Has anyone heard anything about the Tailor Lofts?

Checking in. I'm fairly sure ill be at Kent this fall.
I've heard nothing good about living in Tailor Lofts from current students, mainly because of the large undergrad population. Also I toured it and was pretty disapointed by what I saw. I think I will use chicago apartment finder or something similar to find housing.

I'm signing my lease on Friday at Presidential Towers. I've read mixed reviews there (MOSTLY GOOD), but I have a 108lb American Bulldog so my options were limited from the get go lol

I stand corrected.a11 1n wrote:That link is for those still waiting on decisions. This is where the matriculating class can come to discuss their plans.
What are some good areas to live in further north that have more of a nightlife/social scene that are close to the subway lines?

Hey guys,
I'll be attending kent this fall and have a few questions. When is orientation? I dont have my info around and I heard presidential towers is willing to negotiate anyone have any luck with this? In addition if you dont mind me asking what are you paying (if you have a studio) is it the listed price of 990 or were you able to work them lower?

I haven't tried negotiating the price with them (will be sure to try this weekend for sure). As of now I'm paying $1,320 a month due in part to the view I wanted, it being on a lower floor to avoid elevator hassles, and it being a 757 square footer to house my clothes/shoe obsessed girlfriend and my 108lb American Bulldog whose cage alone occupies a significant amount of square footage. I will let you know if price negotiation is at all possible following my trip.

Checking In. 99% sure Kent is where I'll be going this fall.
Orientation last year started Aug. 16th and went the whole week. So, if they keep the same pattern it will start the 15th.

Also checking in
I'm pretty sure I'll be at Kent this fall. I'm already looking into what areas of Chicago I want to live in, since I don't think I can afford the school housing :/

Just sat in on legislation class with Prof. Sowle. It was great and he was great. Energetic and interesting. Talked with him at length after class and he was incredibly friendly and open. On my phone, have to run. Just thought I would give some comfort to those freaking out.

I sat in on Crim Law with Prof Heyman and was less than impressed (dull topic and lame student discussion). I was able to speak with a few other profs as well as Dean Krent; everyone was very approachable, friendly and energetic. I thought the facilities were nice as well. Overall I enjoyed the weekend and left with a very good feeling.

I sat in on the Crim Law.....ugh...at least I know Heyman is more geared toward Policy now because he discussed it to death from various angles. Even with it being an ASW mock class, we had gunners! lol There was one student who I know for a fact had to have read some statutes and black letter law because she started quoting it before he broke her off and tried to focus us on the broader policy and it's bases.

Re: Chicago-Kent Class of 2014
Hey guys and gals - put my deposit down for Kent after ASW. I moved from Ohio in October and am living in lakeview now so I can help answer questions about living in this part of town. I'll just say up front that it's the best place I've ever lived.
I had some success negotiating with the school on schollys. originally i hadn't received a scholarship but after an email to Dean Krent (following the recommendation from this site) i received a scholarship which put Kent over the top for me.
I'd also love to get together at some point before August with fellow TLSers for a beer or 3.

Can you elaborate on this please? What is your rent? House or apartment? All I hear is how easy the transit is, is this true? How long does it take to get into the loop? What made you choose lakeview? Anything else you want to add would be much apprecieted.pauwelsd wrote:I moved from Ohio in October and am living in lakeview now so I can help answer questions about living in this part of town. Oh and congrats on the $$!

May 19th is when my lease starts. If I'm not in exactly on the 19th, then a few days after.rdavi012 wrote:when r u moving in?chicarda wrote:I'm signing my lease on Friday at Presidential Towers. Re: Chicago-Kent Class of 2014
first off - thanks! i was excited since Kent was my first choice from the beginning.danget bobby wrote:Can you elaborate on this please? What is your rent? House or apartment? secondly about the apartment. My first piece of advice is to take your time when looking for an apartment. the first one I moved into has been a nightmare that I'm just now escaping. I moved into Wrigleyville originally which is the area just north of lakeview surrounding Wrigley Field. both areas are great, but lakeview is really alive. this weekend when it first got warm the streets were full of people out shopping, dining, and just enjoying the weather. in the first apartment, I'm paying 1080/month for a small 1br apartment with a roommate (so i'm only paying 540). I could have done much better. the second apartment is a 2br with double the square footage and better amenities for 1500/month (750 is my share). i know my boss has a nice studio for about 800 in the same area where I'm moving. not awful.
as for transit - i couldn't ask for anything better. i'm about 2 minutes from the nearest bus stop which takes me down a road which has my work, the nearest grocery store (jewel-osco), a target, and any number of bars, restaurants, and shops. i'm 7 minutes from the red-line which goes from evanston through downtown as far south as 95th street. i would recommend living near the brown line, though, which shares the same tracks as the redline up to belmont, since the brown line is the quickest and closest train to Kent.
as for finding an apartment i know a number of people which have used craigslist which is fine if you are in town for a while and can schedule times to visit apartments. if you can't, you can contact any number of apartment rental places (I suggest apartmentsavvy.com, who helped me find my new place) who can help you (for free) to find a place for you based on what you want.
i feel like that's a lot for now - i'll be happy to help with whatever else you have questions about.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
