Georgia State Class of 2014
I am about 95% sure I will be attending Georgia State next year, barring a miracle acceptance at UGA. Anyone else here planning on attending?

Have fun in Athens then. If I had that opportunity I would take it and not look back. Good luck to you.

I am in as well! Congrats to everyone. I will be making my decision after I hear back from UGA and Wake. Good luck to those who haven't heard!

According to the National Law Journal, Ga State ranked slightly higher than UGA in terms of Big Law positions in 2010. I believe UGA got 25 (11.5%) into the NLJ250 and Georgia State got 22 (13.5%). UGA however had more graduates so they have more associates in BigLaw but a smaller percentage. They both fell behind Emory which had 54 (22.1%). So things are looking up, at least in terms of BigLaw.

Did you take loans out? If so, when does the loan money actually arrive?mbutterfly wrote:1L here willing to take any questions!

Re: Georgia State Class of 2014
Yes, I took out the maximum amount in federal loans (22k) plus federal PLUS loans (~8k) to cover all my expenses. Here's the kicker: loan money is disbursed the 2nd or 3rd week into school, so plan your finances accordingly. I just put it all on my credit card which bought me an extra month until bills became due. Something GSU does (which I think is sort of predatory) is they let you buy your textbooks on credit from the campus bookstore. The reason I think it is predatory is because the textbooks in the school bookstore are more expensive and usually in poorer quality than buying online. So students, who don't have the funds yet to purchase their books, end up having to go to the student bookstore.

Would you recommend living close to the law school or commuting from an area like Decatur? How cutthroat are the students in your section?mbutterfly wrote:1L here willing to take any questions!

I have heard that most law student tend to live off campus, at least a few miles. I have personally looked at the area around Lindbergh Station as I am interested in using MARTA to save money on gas and stay out of traffic. Its about 5-6 miles from school.BamaGrad09 wrote:Would you recommend living close to the law school or commuting from an area like Decatur? On a side note, I will also be looking for a roommate, hopefully another law student or at least a grad student, so if anyone is interested, please let me know.

Yeah, I was thinking about checking out areas around Lindbergh, Grant Park, and Piedmont Park. My girlfriend will be moving with me, and I know she wants to be in the city, so we'll have to check out places in May. I'm somewhat familiar with Atlanta, as I live just a few hours south, but she lives in Lexington, KY so I'm sure I'll be doing most of the searching.
I thought about using MARTA too, but I've heard bad things about it. Still considering it. I've heard that parking passes can be hard to get for the decks near the law school.

How has GSU been notifying of acceptance? email? phone? snail mail?
I applied late (lsac screwed up my transcripts) and finally got it in Jan 15, 2011.
I'm out of town for a couple of weeks and wonder if I should have someone watching the mailbox.

Re: Georgia State Class of 2014
I wouldn't recommend living close to the law school. I've lived in Atlanta (in Buckhead, Decatur and Midtown) for about 5 years now and the area around GSU is a little sketchy and dodgy. It mirrors the remainder of the immediate surrounding area (Downtown ATL). There are some really awesome, more historic condos/apartments downtown, but it's really not somewhere that I've ever felt comfortable walking around once the sun goes down. I would for sure recommend living in Midtown. It has amazing older homes/apartments/etc and is much safer. There's also a lot more to do in Midtown IMO. Decatur and similar surrounding "cities" are alright, but don't get fooled into thinking it will be cheaper than somewhere like Midtown. If you do your due diligence, you can easily find a nice and comparable place to live in Midtown for the same price, and sometimes for less, plus Midtown is maybe a 5-10 minute drive from the school.BamaGrad09 wrote:Would you recommend living close to the law school or commuting from an area like Decatur?mbutterfly wrote:1L here willing to take any questions!

You can find some STEALS in the Midtown/Old 4th Ward area which is close to GSU. Or you can pay $800 for a 1br apartment not close to GSU. Depends how think your skin is. Its not like you would be walking down your street talking to people when it gets dark out anyways.

Craiglist. My roommate and I found a 2/1 with own garage and private entrance in a new house (in law suite kind of thing) for 800. less than a mile from downtown, short cabride to virginia highlands bar/restraunt area, look out my window and see the bank of america building all lit up at night.uwgbluedevil wrote:any recommendations?
