I've worked in firms, and at least in them older partners have some pushback authority against the IT guys in terms of keeping things usable. For example, I'm sure emails at firms still follow the FirstInitial/LastName@firm.com standard or some variant, rather than the YourInitials/RandomCharactersThatNoOneElseWillEverRememberSoThatHiringPartnerYouNetworkedAPhoneInformationalInterviewWithWillNeverBeAbleToContactYouHaHa1337Haxxorz@virginia.edu that our IT department prefers.Cavalier wrote:If you think UVA is bad, just wait until you see how a law firm operates.sundance95 wrote:Dear UVA IT: Thanks for making everything so 'secure' that's it's damn near unusable. You can create your own email adderss @virginia.edu. But I was mostly referring to the passwords--for accessing my firm's computer system remotely for example, I needed to know my username, which was a string of numbers and letters, my actual password, and my BlackBerry password so that I could access my RSA SecurID password (which changes every sixty seconds). And accessing WestLaw and Lexis was even worse.sundance95 wrote:I've worked in firms, and at least in them older partners have some pushback authority against the IT guys in terms of keeping things usable. If someone knows how, or knows where one can find this info, please post. I can memorize a random jumble of letters eventually, but the email thing is what really got under my skin.

By the way, was anyone else on grounds today? I went to pick up my copy of Office, and man, you could really feel the OCI tension in the air.

I wasn't on Grounds, but my roommate is a 2L and I got to hear about her interviews, which was cool.

I couldn't help myself. He said grounds and OCI in the same sentence. The cognitive dissonance was too much.Gecko of Doom wrote:I was wondering how long that would take.plenipotentiary wrote:*OGI

Dammit! I even consciously wrote grounds to avoid this public shaming.plenipotentiary wrote:I couldn't help myself. He said grounds and OCI in the same sentence. The cognitive dissonance was too much.Gecko of Doom wrote:I was wondering how long that would take.plenipotentiary wrote:*OGI

Why are people already in the bookstore buying their crim book?

Because every section uses it, and the used ones are $100 less than the new.jawsthegreat wrote:Why are people already in the bookstore buying their crim book?

You can't set up your email@virginia.edu to be whatever you want. You can set it up to be NAME@email.virginia.edu though.YCrevolution wrote:Many moons ago, I posted the directions somewhere (in C/O 2012 and 2013). Forgive my ignorance, but is there a separate bookstore for law students? Or do we just go to the general UVA bookstore like everyone else?

There is a separate bookstore inside the law school, at the end of Slaughter hall.esq wrote:Forgive my ignorance, but is there a separate bookstore for law students? Or do we just go to the general UVA bookstore like everyone else?

The general UVA bookstore is, however, pretty sweet. It's massive.

Tomorrow morning, probably. If today is even Thursday...I've lost all sense of time and space during OGI. It has been non-stop and relentless.crossingforHYS wrote:aren't we supposed to get our sections tonight !

While I love that the uva email is through gmail and not some proprietary system that barely works, UVA computing has to be one of the most nightmarish systems I've ever encountered. What possible reason is there for having such a convoluted mess?

This may sound crazy, but other schools have systems that are far worse. I miss the UVA setup.WVUCelticFan wrote:While I love that the uva email is through gmail and not some proprietary system that barely works, UVA computing has to be one of the most nightmarish systems I've ever encountered. Non-stop is better than the alternatives, though. A problem, but one worth having. I know of people who had 9+ interviews on the first day, I'm sure that was a nightmare.crossingforHYS wrote:I'm sorry.5ky wrote:Tomorrow morning, probably. And with that news, I can add my recommendation that the incoming class not look up the grade spread of the Professors in their section.WVUCelticFan wrote:Sections are up on law web.
