I think AJDs just started recently.

It seems like the administration is generally behind on a lot of things. I e-mailed them to ask about 2011-2012 tuition and COA budget, but they couldn't even give me a schedule for when it would be available (knowing how much money I can use towards housing is becoming a necessary piece of information). Hopefully they get their act together now that the school year is over.

Have you not gotten your financial aid thing yet that has the COA in it?

Yes, but mine used the 2010-2011 COA budget and said that it would be revised.

Did yours use a 2011-2012 budget?

Thanks to Flips for sending me the updated budget. If anyone is wondering, they did increase the room/board allowance as discussed during the financial aid presentation at ASW.

Yeah, the housing budget was increased 13%+

Tuition went up 4.4%, as I generally expected from the undergrad tuition increase.

1) What does it mean that Fall semester classes start in August, but Fall quarter classes start in September. Which of those applies to 1L's?

2) Due to some important things that have already been scheduled, I probably have to be out of town on August 24+25 (2 days of orientation) and August 31+September 1 (2 days of "Fall semester".) How bad is this?

For #1, the admitted students' site says fall classes begin August 29.

I'm starting in the fall, not a current student, but... my opinion would be to reschedule the other thing your doing. You're talking about missing two days in your first week of law school, and if the schedule is anything like the mock schedule, you'll be missing the first class of two courses.

I heard that every important friendship in law school is formed in the first week, so you'd be out of luck.

Ha just kidding. I'll share my notes from those days with you if you are in my section. Maybe TLS NU 2014 can reenact the lectures for you. It will be good practice for when we're all law professors. I think the only thing you'll miss in orientation is awesome hangouts and boring things about how to brief a case, and the only thing you'll miss on those days of class is learning how to be humiliated by a professor. Which personally I wouldn't miss for anything, but to each his own I guess.

I believe I read somewhere that orientation is mandatory, so you might be stuck depending on your reasons. I'd wager that they don't like to be flexible given the whole "if we let 1, we have to let everybody" logic. I'd contact admissions asap so you can get your ducks in a row.

Lower salaries make it even more difficult for newly minted lawyers to pay off their law school debt — like the $150,000 in loans that David Perry accumulated upon graduation from Northwestern University School of Law in 2009.

Mr. Perry, 37, became a career associate at Orrick after unsuccessfully seeking public service work (which would offer the option of loan forgiveness). But he says he loves his “lifestyle job,” which enables him to work from home and spend time with his infant son while still doing interesting work.
