how far is the city from HP?
And okay - can someone clear up what this "Chicago rigor" means? is it some type of special curve, the student body, or what?

Chicago has a reputation for being more rigorous than other LSs. Most students say that it actually is about the same as any other top law school...except Yale where they're all touchy feely.

I would agree with this regarding the rigor. I haven't noticed any more "rigor" then you would expect at another law school. I mean if you plan on just reading the Headnotes of cases and nothing else then Chicago isn't the place for you, but as long as you do your work, etc. no one is extremely competitive that I have noticed. Everyone is quite competitive with themselves so you wont get by not doing your work but I think that goes for all law schools.Sentry wrote:8 min by car.glitched wrote:how far is the city from HP?

For law firms? Probably not. For things that arent law firms. Undoubtedly yes. Univ of Chicago is an all-world degree to people who know what they are talking aboutglitched wrote:okay let's be honest here. will going to chicago open more doors for me than going to nyu? anyone have any insight on this? haha this is probably a very biased to post this quesiton but stilll. i'd like to hear a defense for yes.

Yeah, if you're wanting to go into Academia, it's definitely preferable over NYU. Great for clerkships. It's more focused (according to its press) on the intellectual side of law, rather than NYU which I feel might be more practical.
I plan on (hopefully) either clerking/practicing for a few years, getting the PHD, and conning some school into paying me to talk at students and research.
Personally, I'd chose it over NYU because I don't like NYC, and I feel like I'll fit in better with the "self-conciously nerdy" student body. I need at least some friends who like to combine drinking and board games.

Despite that:
If you're going PI I would say no, not at all.
You may be more likely to get to know professors well at Chi b/c of the small size. Their connections and strong recommendations will likely help in opening doors.

I'm aware...I was just waiting to see what the new dean will bring to UChi in this regard. Besides, I may go corporate...I've been know to change my mind, particularly if I don't get the impossible job I want right off the bat and have to do the firm stuff a few years first.Kili wrote:NYU LRAP >>>>>> UChi HPIP Unless you want to go corporate to put a dent in your debt.Non-Chalant1 wrote:You guys keep pushing me away and breaking my heart saying this stuffKili wrote:It depends on you. Not to mention NYU student body is slightly more PI oriented, so you might want to consider the implications of that. (Alumni connections, like-minded student body)

Re: Chicago Class of 2014
i just want flexibility. for now i prefer biglaw either in NYC or SF. but i am not sure.
edit: also does anyone know if going from clerkship to biglaw happens often (im assuming it doesn't really happen the other way around)? or if it is even a good idea or will help getting into a top firm?
