Hey,

I was wondering if any of you Hartford people could help me with some housing areas?

Where are good areas to find housing? Did you craigslist, or are there websites, or just door to door? Could you tell me what is a good price vs. a bad price on rentals in the area? Anyone know anything on Park Place Towers?

The first time I will be in the neighborhood will be this upcoming open house and I really do not know anything.

Also, I will be commuting to work back in MA (up 91), are areas like Windsor and such good places? I got about an hour commute from the law school to my work so I would not prefer to go too far west/south/east of Hartford - although I know north Hartford is not a good section, which is why I am asking.

I'd stay north on the 91 route if I were you. Windsor Locks, Enfield etc, you'll get good bang for your buck vs Hartford/West Hartford and it sounds like you could split the difference between work and school location-wise.

My only issue is that, if my car were ever to breakdown, I have people willing to drive me to work - or I could call out - part time. However, I would have an issue getting to class, the real reason why I am there. So I am a little torn. Also, I do not really like driving in bad weather - yes I know its NE - but still, taking a bus or walking is a lot less hectic.

But thanks for the names of some towns.

I'm a 3L here and I will be attending the ASD on Saturday to answer questions that you may have (just look for Drew). As for intramural sports, we have a softball team and a basketball team. Our law school basketball team, ironically, just won the championship and our softball team just got back from the UVA tournament (where we did horribly but had a blast). You will have plenty of opportunities to get involved in sports if you want to.

Fire away with any more questions and I will try to answer before Saturday, but the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals is coming to campus tomorrow to hear arguments so I will be pretty busy with that and softball tomorrow.

There are some really awesome houses right adjacent to the law school that you will see when you come to ASW. Many/most of them rent out at least a couple of rooms. Aside from that, there is a place called Clemens Place (sp?) that is right near the law school that MOST students choose to live. It is really nice with great amenities. Other than that, West Hartford is great too. I can fill you in more on Saturday if you'd like and point you in the right direction for good housing!

I got lucky and got a separate tour from a great student who gave me a ton of info.
UConn definitely seemed very laid back, very comfortable...I felt right at home.. which is kinda scary to me, I really need pressure, competition, and tension to thrive.

Don't worry- the pressure, competition, and tension will set in when you realize that beating the 3.0 median in a class is entirely dependent upon your performance during a single three-hour exam for which any amount of traditional "studying" will only get you about halfway prepared, and that the evaluation of your performance on said exam will be based entirely upon your standing as compared to your peers.

Understood, and I realize its like that at any school. Its just that I know myself well, and I could totally see me fucking off and skating through until said finals and then cramming and counting on raw intelligence to get me through. Its just so laid back and homey! I realize that should be a plus and not a minus...Maybe its because the campus reminds me so much of my high school, and that's just what I did there. Not saying I'm backing out for that reason...just makes me nervous. And I guess if thats my only bitch, that says a lot!

I agree. It was really laid back, which I really liked. I always assumed that I wouldn't recognize anybody during the ASD. But I was really suprised to see some of my high school and college peers there. Not really sure if that was a good thing or not as of now. How was the actual tour? I had to leave before the tour. The discussion/panel was sooo long! I had to walk around cause I felt my legs dying from sitting too long. The 3Ls during the breakfast were super friendly.

I felt really comfortable at UConn, felt like a good fit. I get really stressed out, so its nice to see they have a lot of stuff to help people who get like that.

While I was there, I got the feeling it was kind of a study hard play hard atmosphere but I could be wrong. I'm not too worried about it since I am doing the evening division - which after the day I think I might choose to stay in.

It is a definite stress to know that your grade pretty much consists of only 1 exam. That worries me the most b/c I'm usually they guy who has an oops somewhere along the way which pushes me for the whole semester.

All in all my biggest worry there was the area and living there. Honestly, it looked like it was a really nice area. I was thinking it was going to be a lot worse.

I just wanted to get a feeling for the atmosphere and people. I would go back and asked to sit in on a real class if I really wanted to know how it was. I did find it interesting though that they didn't send us like a 1-2 page case brief to read so that we would know what would be going on.

The panel was good but extremely long. They were preaching about being organized and how to manage their time...I think they should have taken their own advice.

Funny part of asd for me: after the student panel/Q&A, I was with a group of kids chatting outside and everyone in the group was like "I hate Duke" and then this girl walked past us and said "Hey, I'm from Duke!, but its ok everyone hates us"

I also felt like a loser when I saw this one girl bring her whole family and I brought no one

No not at all. There was an alumni panel that was pretty useless, except for the fact that alumni are always open to talk with students - i.e. shoot them an email or call them because they like that. Otherwise, people asked some pretty useless questions and dragged it out to the nth degree.

You did miss the free food though, but that's ok, it wasn't anything great...except it was 1:36 by the time the panel was done and my stomach was grumbling since like 1 non-stop so the food tasted like the best food in the world.

While downloading the notice of intention PDF to send in with the $250 deposit, I noticed there was contradictory information regarding the due dates. The email I initially received stated it needed to be there by the 22nd of April, but the PDF states the 15th.

Did you guys also get the 22nd of April in your email? I will be sending it out tomorrow. If its the 15th, I will need to overnight it. Thx

The deadline is def April 15th. They send a reminder email out last week. Also, if you use USPS and some some sort of confirmation/signature option, make sure it doesn't get to Hartford for delivery on Sat. Post office doesn't automatically redeliver and Admissions doesn't go to the post office to pick up mail like that. Ends up being a pain to deal with.

That is so Odd!

Here is a portion of my letter, verbatim:

"If you would like to reserve a place in the 2011 entering class, please complete the Notice of Intention by April 22, 2011. We also require a non-refundable first deposit of $250 by that date which will be applied to your first semester's tuition upon your registration for classes."

I am going to call them tomorrow. But Mack you are right, if it is truly the 15th, we should be fine if we send it this week...

Just so you guys aren't worried about it: You won't be enrolling in courses for your first semester. You'll be placed in the mandatory classes by the registrar which include (for Day students): Contracts, Torts, Civil Procedure, Criminal Law, and Lawyering Process (legal writing and research.) The April 11th-15th and 18th dates apply only to rising 2Ls and 3Ls.
