Sigh.
Unfortunately I don't think my "date me so we can live together and take the edge off some of my immense and impending law school debt" pick up line will be very successful.
Trust me, I've thought about it

I'm moving in June, but I will likely need to sell my kidneys to afford it...

You're overlooking the pool of potentials who you will be pitching that line to...many of them will be swimming in debt too.

My soon-to-be roommate is local, so we arranged it via fax and email
I'll be in the Noble Square area- about 20 min by bus to campus

I saw it last week and loved the Chicago shots and the Bean at the end.
I am intending on moving in to an apartment on August 1st and going to Lollapalooza, which is the 5th-7th. It'll be my 4th year in a row so y'all should join the party!

How far north is it still reasonable to live? I'm looking on padmapper and there are some much cheaper apartments up in the Lincoln Park area, but it'll be like a 20-30 minute bus/metro ride. Is that a reasonable commute?

This really depends on how much you value proximity to campus. I heard a lot of mixed things from current students, some said that you really wanted a short commute and it was worth more money. Others said they liked living further away.
Have you looked at this?

Yeah I saw that in the admitted student pdf thing on the website. My concern comes from the amount they have allocated for living costs for loans. With a $1200/month apartment, money may be tight for food costs, but with an $850 or $900 apartment up north, budgeting would be much easier. I guess theoretically you can just use money that should be for another purpose for housing, right? Since you just get it in a lump
ETA: also, most leases are 12 months. I guess I'll be aiming to have a summer job in Chicago, but there's the chance I don't and would either have to eat the cost or sublease it.

Yeah, I understand the money issue. In the financial aid presentation at ASW they mentioned that the living expense allocation for 2011-2012 would be increased if it matters to you. I wish they would put out a final tuition and COA budget for 2011-2012.
I guess I would just keep in mind that 20-30 minutes during the day could turn into 1 hour or potentially more late at night. You could always allocate some of your "savings" from living that far away to taxi fares though.

Yeah, having an extra $3,000 could go a long way. plus, I can always read on a bus/El ride. I think I'll be looking in Lakeview and Lincoln Park. There seems to be no advantage to Streeterville except proximity to school.
ETA: but yeah, the bus ride late at night during finals crunch time could be a drag

The late night bus rides aren't a big deal. CTA has a bus tracker that helps you figure out when to leave school so you don't have to wait for the bus. One caveat: numerous buses don't run all night. Keep that in mind.

Do you live in Streeterville or farther from school?

River West. The 66 runs all night and drops me off a block from my place. I could never live in Streeterville. It's too busy, too packed, and way too friggin expensive.

Lakeview and Lincoln Park are both great neighborhoods and will be very doable--you'll be very happy with either you choose. Transit won't be a major issue for either, and there are some serious benefits to living there instead of Streeterville, as bjsesq said.
I am going to move to Streetervile for personal reasons, but I am going to miss Lakeview.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
