I think they are talking about A Civil Action from the required/recommended readings on this page: https://www.law.duke.edu/students/orien ... anslecture

Nothing I've done at Duke has required Win7 Pro.

Ya. I was inquiring as to the advantages to reading the entire book versus reading the required sections of it.

So... maybe an obvious question, but are we supposed to be dressed up (suit and tie?) for our ID picture? If it's all the same, I'm just gonna throw on a dress shirt and call it a day.

I took it with a t shirt ha, hope we weren't supposed to wear anything in particular. I can't see having to since the shot they want would cut off the collar and you wouldn't be able to see suit, can't hurt to throw on a nice shirt though.

The picture will eventually be at http://www.law.duke.edu/studir employers will be given a copy of the current picture, but there's an invited photographer in the fall that can take professional pictures. The earliest it will really matter is your spring semester. At minimum, make sure you've got something decent there before 2L OCI.

Thanks for the heads up. Just took a minute and threw on a tie and shirt and took a new one. Should due till the professional shows up.

Oh man, seems like the entire 1L class is staying at Alexan Garrett/ Pinnacle Ridge. Can any C/O '13ers comment on the social aspect/ meeting fellow law students if you live elsewhere? I'm just hoping that I won't be missing out on too much by not staying at one of the above apartments!

Thanks!

How's the social life? Is UVA really that much better? How about support for PI folks? Many likeminded students? Thanks.

No. The better question is whether Duke is really that much better.

A couple of the "rising" 2Ls posting here including me are PI focused.

Awesome! Glad to hear you like it and are PI focused. Do you get much institutional support? I heard Duke often runs out of LRAP funding, and that if you leave PI or make $75,000 or more before the 10 years are up, it might not have even helped you at all. Any thoughts on that? So the social scene is good? I'm a pretty social person and Duke felt a little quiet and isolated to me when I visited. I'm a big fan of studying in coffee shops, going to happy hours, etc.

Edit: This makes me sound like a really shallow person who is choosing between law schools for the wrong reasons. I'm just trying to differentiate between options that I think will all get me where I want to go career-wise.

A bit, yes. Not sure how exactly to answer this. There are PI people and externship opportunities, etc... But for PI you have to actually go out and apply to places, they aren't all going to come to OCI.
I heard Duke often runs out of LRAP funding,
Not true so far as I know.
and that if you leave PI
For any program working with Federal IBR (IE, most everyone including Virginia I think) the 10 year thing does apply. You have to work in PI for 10 years to get your total loans forgiven, otherwise you wind up still in debt after the 10.
or make $75,000 or more before the 10 years are up,
False, so far as I know. Your payments/month will go up but you still get the forgiveness at the end of 10 years (IE your lower payments for the first X years were still good for you).

I'm NOT someone who goes out every night, so it might be better to ask someone more like that. There were some people in our class who did lots of bars/clubs/etc... I found lots of people to hang out with and chill. Durham is a decent place for that given its size.

It's bigger than it seems. There are 1.7 million people in the Triangle, and that's up over 30% over the last decade.

Between downtown Durham, Chapel Hill, and Raleigh, there is plenty plenty to do. Spent the summer on East Campus and it was easy to enjoy the social scene any night of the week.

Saw the first day of orientation is business causal. Anyone who is a present student know what business casual means around duke? Closer to suit with no tie or more like khakis and a polo?

If it's going to be 100 degrees like it's been I vote for polo and khakis.

Did you go to the admitted students day in the spring? If so, wear the same sort of thing.

As for a more concrete answer, if you show up in khakis and a polo I imagine you will not be out of place, but you might be on the less dressy end of the spectrum. You can go a little nicer if you want, but I wouldn't wear a coat (and CERTAINLY no tie). You don't need one and it is going to be hot. Take my advice with a grain of salt though, because ultimately your class is going to define what business casual means to them. IT doesn't really matter what the 2Ls and 3Ls think is business casual, at least not for your fist day.

It really doesn't matter. Anything that can plausibly meet the definition of business casual is fine. If you dedicate more than 30 second of thought to this decision, you're doing it wrong.

Oh, and if you haven't filled out the mentor survey, do it SOON. I am gonna start matching at the end of the week, and if you don't have your survey results in your match will probably not be as good as it could have been otherwise.

Hurry up and match already. I can't wait to exacerbate fall semester anxiety for my 1L mentee.

Duke Law 0/1L Discovery of the Day:

You must complete an online health survey IN ADDITION to the immunization form you have your doctor fill out. The immunization form can't be processed until you've filled out the form online: http://www.studentaffairs.duke.edu/stud ... nts#health

Also, found out today that to get your laptop allowance factored into your loan package you have to purchase a laptop/laptop accessories and then submit receipts for reimbursement at which point they'll issue an additional GradPLUS loan to cover the computer.

These are two magical discoveries I made today. I might be a total bonehead, but I missed both those points the first bajillion times I looked through the orientation email and admissions materials. Hopefully someone on here finds this helpful!

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
