Hey guys!

Congrats on getting admitted! I don't live in the gradplex but I have been in it a couple times so I will offer what limited insight I have. The gradplex is wonderful because it is not even a 5 minute walk to school/library. It's also nice because you don't have to live there in the summer, so if you get a job in a different city, you won't be paying double rent (although some apartment complexes do offer 10 month leases). Plus, you don't have to pay utilities (I think) so that's awesome.

Despite these pros, there are a number of cons that kept me away from living there. First, you don't really have any say in who you live with. You just kinda get assigned based on availability. This can be a good thing because you may get to meet people in other grad programs. However, some of the students you may be rooming with are international. This is usually great but you will have to deal with time change issues. One of my friends has a roommate who is always on the phone really late or really early because he is talking to friends or family in China, so he has a hard time sleeping. They also are really old. If you come on the tour they show you a pretty nice apartment but in reality, the furniture looks like it is straight out of the 70's.

I guess my deciding factor was that I lived pretty close to campus in undergrad so in LS, I just wanted a place I could call home and that I could go to to get away from school. I hope this helps! Happy New Year!!

Seems a little odd. Though I did read on the website if you request a roommate, they will honor it.

They don't always pair law students with other law students. Education and MBA students are also in the gradplex, as well as other grad students.

As for roommate requests, I'm not entirely sure how it works. I know you can request a roommate but I know that either you may not get your roommate or it may be harder to get a place in the gradplex because it is harder to place 2 students in the same place than 1. I don't live there and I didn't apply so my info may not be entirely accurate, I'm just relaying what I've heard. There is a chance I could be completely wrong so definitely don't take my info as the be all end all.

Yeah, actually. I did a lot of research on their statistics/student body when I was applying, but nnot as much in terms of the location. How is the layout of the school and Williamsburg? Will I need a car?

If I go to W&M, I'll be moving from Los Angeles. It's going to be huge change and I worry more about the city more than the school (I mean, I heard good things about the facilities, and in terms of library and how pretty the school is...doesn't really matter to me as much).

The law school is seperated a little from the undergrad campus. It's about a block away. The entire law school is in one building.
I would say a car is probably not an absolute necessity, especially if you have a bike and get a place to live near school. Even though the 'burg is pretty small, you could easily live 5+miles from campus. Traffic is slow enough that you would be good on a bike, but thats sort of a long ride. There may be times that you would wish you had a car, like when the weather is bad, or you want to go to a city, or drive to one of the many many historic sites in the surrounding area, but you will get by without one.
There is an amtrak station right by campus, that will get you to DC.
Colonial williamsburg is about a 30second walk from campus, and there are several restaurants there.
The big thing that struck me was that everything was definitely old, but was in remarkably good shape. Old meant beautiful and charming, not delapidated and dirty.
I'm trying to think of what else to say.....The one thing that surprised me, was that it seems like pretty much every college town I've been to has a road with bars and restaurants that all the students hang out at. I didn't find that in Williamsburg. Maybe I just missed it, but I did not see it.
I'm sure there's more I could say...I'm moving from Phoenix, and went to undergrad at ASU, so it's going to be a huge change for me too, but I'm looking forward to it.

Though I am probably not going seeing as I have not been accepted and likely won't be, I am in here to confirm what Capitol A said about the bar scene. You did not miss it, and I was told on my tour that there are generally 3 restaurant/bar places the students like to rotate at.

Otherwise it is mostly house parties and things. Also judging from the area, I would try and bring a car if possible. I know Busch Gardens is nearby and the tour guide said they sometimes drive an hour to VA Beach on weekends. Things seem to be pretty spread out.

The law building itself is really nice. While it was not as big as UVA's I really liked it. It had a nice charm to it, and I loved the history stuff. That was my favorite part about Williamsburg.

Oh and I am a SoCal person and another great thing about W&M was the traffic.

I did my undergrad at W&M and loved it! The town is really nice and small, which means low traffic. There are lots of nice apartments near campus which means a bike works for most of the year. It rains alot in the winter though, so invest in galoshes. For those of you wanting photos, it looks just like the website. Honestly, it is like living in another time. You get free access to the historic sites (or at least you used to) with your student ID, so save your money and see all the historical exhibits when you get there. The undergrad campus is really close to the law school (everything is really close!), so you should all go visit the Daily Grind. It's an awesomely kooky coffee shop with Fair Trade and home made baked goods. Delicious sustenance for all of your studying needs. I am geographically restricted, but I would be applying for law school if I wasn't. Good Luck!

Haha. I wouldn't exactly consider Wawa a grocery store. Idk if you went inside, but it's basically a 7-11 with a sandwich counter... just coffee and hot dogs and potato chips, no real groceries except maybe milk and eggs.

There's a Bloom with a bus stop right in front of it, and you can catch the bus on campus. It's free for students, just show your W&M ID. You can also take the bus to Target or Martins, but it's a bit farther and you have to switch bus lines.

The Richmond Road Wawa is really tiny, and all of the groceries are way overpriced. Tons of students go there for sandwiches and coffee and stuff, but Bloom is the best bet for relatively well-priced groceries on the bus route.

Obviously non-committal, but are there any students leaning towards W&M who would be interested in renting an apartment together? If there's a way to save money over the gradplex while still living close to school, I'd be very interested, and that probably means living with a few other people

I had friends who lived in Steeplechase (--LinkRemoved--), it's less than a 10 min drive from campus and it's much more quiet and docile than the places closer to campus. The apartments are beautiful, but it's a little pricey. That'd be my top suggestion, but I'm sure there are other good places too if anyone else wants to chime in.

Visited today and loved it. The facility is beautiful, and Williamsburg is really cool. I'd been before, but I especially enjoyed this visit knowing I'll be spending 3 years in the area. I put some pics in an album. There aren't really any interior shots of the law school, but maybe people who have never been to Williamsburg will find them helpful regardless. I feel like I'm not supposed to include the link on here, but maybe I'm making that up. If that's right, let me know if you want it. If I'm wrong, let me know and I will include it.

They were the first school I heard back from, and the 50/50 scholarship is good, but then IU made it rain. It's not totally out of the running if they can negotiate a bit, but I feel bad taking up someone's slot.
