Popular grad apartment buildings very close to duke tend to be station 9, erwin terrace apartments, west village lofts, and lofts at lakeview. Belmont is great, but majority of residents are undergrad.etlien wrote:Can anyone suggest apartments within walking distance to the law school?

Nice letter from Dean Levi yesterday with an interesting article published by him in the Duke Law Review. I was really hoping it was scholarship info when I saw the big envelope.

Second that re: scholarship hopes from the big envelope. Article looks like it'll be interesting though. Duke is making a concerted yet not overbearing effort through e-mail and mailings to stay in touch with admitted students. I approve.

Congrats to whoever has been accepted, and good luck to the others. WRT housing, I really do recommend Pinnacle Ridge for 1L, because almost every single preparty is there (people share rides/cabs to bars), and it is about 6 minutes from school (never traffic on Academy Dr). It's also on the way to Chapel Hill, which is awesome. There is really nothing worth walking to school from, especially when it is hot or freezing for half the school year. Pinnacle is also conveniently right next to Supertarget, Sam's club etc. so you can stop by for cheap groceries on the way back from class to save time.

Receptions in DC. Pretty cool. The place they're having it is the one law firm where I actually know a partner. A good reason to go (but 6 freaking hours by car...). I wonder if Duke would pay for a flight?

@Mr Toad... If you're coming from Raleigh/Durham area, you can make a Megabus trip to DC on the day of the reception for $9 round-trip... That's what I'll be doing

Checking in. Does anyone know if Duke offers a travel stipend for visits? I've looked all over their website and can't find a thing.

Coming from Ohio, unfortunately. Probably won't be able to get off work anyway... 12 hours of driving for a 2 hour visit during the work week = unlikely.chrispronger wrote:@Mr Toad... I've thought about making him my 'tar, too. Maybe now's the time
Are there any copyright issues with using pics like the one on Wikipedia for personal 'tars?

They offer a $150 stipend, but it's only for the ASW and there's lots of stipulations. But hey, it's better than nothin. The Gentleman wrote:Checking in. Does anyone know if Duke offers a travel stipend for visits? I've looked all over their website and can't find a thing.

This is problematic...I don't know how to drive and had no plans to start...Looking at Station 9, which looks kinda walkable...but apparently its party central for b-school people...DallasCowboy wrote:There is really nothing worth walking to school from, especially when it is hot or freezing for half the school year.

Station 9 is not in walking distance of the law school, unless you want to walk 40 minutes to class. There are buses that run from that area to Campus so if you really don't want to learn how to drive that is an option. But, Durham is spread out so a car is pretty much a must if you want to spend any time with friends.etlien wrote:This is problematic...I don't know how to drive and had no plans to start...Looking at Station 9, which looks kinda walkable...but apparently its party central for b-school people...DallasCowboy wrote:There is really nothing worth walking to school from, especially when it is hot or freezing for half the school year.

I'm going to say this because I mentioned it (I think) to last year's incoming class and it is probably the best advice I will ever give on TLS.pelmen74 wrote:Station 9 is not in walking distance of the law school, unless you want to walk 40 minutes to class. I spent until February last year without a car in Durham. This was difficult. GET A CAR.

I would recommend a car (I've lived in the area for a while), but if it's just not an option, getting a bike a strategically using the buses could work.pelmen74 wrote:Station 9 is not in walking distance of the law school, unless you want to walk 40 minutes to class. The buses that run near Station 9 aren't of much help in getting you to the law school (the business school students who live there tend to share rides or drive themselves). If you really don't want to drive, get a bike and live somewhere off Erwin (The Lofts, Erwin Terrace, Belmont, etc) or in a house/old apartment off East Campus. If you live near East Campus, you can catch a bus (the C-3, if I'm not mistaken) that gets you close to the law school.

Where do the most social people live? Are there any avenues for getting housing with other 1Ls? I'm a very hard worker, but I prefer to be around people who aren't boring.

Pinnacle's where it's at. Like I said above, in my class, there is always at least one apt. having a pregame on a given friday/saturday night. Usually open to any/all 1L'S. When the weather was nice, there were always people grilling by the pool and playing tennis.
I would try to meet a roommate at ASW, or facebook if you can't make it. For Pinnacle Ridge, you usually end up getting on a waitlist and finding your actual assignment in the late spring to summer.
edit: Yeah, 6 minutes by car. I know people on a lower floor who are paying around 815 for a 2-bedroom.
I'm on a third floor wooded view and we pay 885. Cable/internet run about 95 and all utilities combined probably around 100, depending on usage. So my roommate and I each pay just under 550 a month total.

That's phenomenal. I'm in Manhattan right now and it's near impossible to find a bedroom below $1000/month. Does Duke have on-campus housing or anything like that?DallasCowboy wrote:Pinnacle's where it's at.
