I'm a CA lifer who has a decent shot at UVa but almost none at UCLA/USC (read: supersplitter). My hope is that if I end up at UVa that mass mailing with my ties can help me snag interviews with CA, mainly NorCal, firms.YCrevolution wrote:I'd have to look, but there aren't too many CA firms that do OCI at UVA. The NALP directory of legal employers has 63 firms from California doing OCI at UVA. 16 are in Los Angeles with 6 more in Irvine and few more in OC outside of Irvine. That should give some idea of what it looks like in SoCal. SF has 14 and Palo Alto 11 for NorCal. Can't speak for how good this is or how much success UVA grads have with California but I have heard that California is the 3rd most popular destination after NY and DC.bk187 wrote:I'm a CA lifer who has a decent shot at UVa but almost none at UCLA/USC (read: supersplitter). The medians for GPA are higher at both UVA (slightly) and LSAT (by about 2 points) than at USC.

So already there's been a 170/3.0-3.5 ED go to waitlist.
Anyone know from last year when the floodgates on 170 start tightening?
'cause they tighten quite a bit: http://uva.lawschoolnumbers.com/stats/0 ... Cycle=1011

Really? All the 170/3.0-3.5's I've seen have been admitted. (I did see a 170/3.25 get waitlisted)

Just off the top of my head, here were the notable California-based firms at OGI:sherpaorlawschool wrote:The NALP directory of legal employers has 63 firms from California doing OCI at UVA. 16 are in Los Angeles with 6 more in Irvine and few more in OC outside of Irvine. Morrison & Foerster
Wilson Sonsini
Gibson Dunn
O'Melveny & Myers (admittedly, only for Century City)
Latham & Watkins
Paul Hastings
Pillsbury
Fenwick & West
Cooley
Also consider the fact that firms like Jones Day come to interview for all of their offices.
The only big-time California firms who don't come are Munger, Irell, and Quinn Emanuel. But 90% of the class has basically no shot at Munger and Irell, so the only firm that strikes me as a notable "miss" is Quinn Emanuel (who doesn't come for their NY office, either).
I think UVA is the right choice over UCLA/USC, especially for someone who has California ties. Screening interviews with California firms are very easy to get - I used 11 bids on California firms and received 10 preselect and alternate interviews without stellar grades, other credentials, or even solid ties to California.

This is great to hear. I am origionally from CA, family all still lives there, just doing undergrad in Texas. I would REALLY love to end up back in CA. I dont know if you know, but were many offices there from the Irvine/OC area?RVP11 wrote:Just off the top of my head, here were the notable California-based firms at OGI:sherpaorlawschool wrote:The NALP directory of legal employers has 63 firms from California doing OCI at UVA. 16 are in Los Angeles with 6 more in Irvine and few more in OC outside of Irvine. on the LSN chart, they seem to be pretty obsessed with 170 vs. 169. more so than any other single point at any school I've seen. However, how reliable are these charts? Does LSAC or the law schools state they have value?

No, anyone can post whatever they want on LSN, self reported. And not even close to all the applicants use it, so it is not as useful as many people on this form make it out to bejustadude55 wrote:no, then all the 170/3.25's didn't get admittedjt1341 wrote:So then all of them didnt get admitted....CaliMizzou wrote:Really? It's self reported, but the charts paint a decent picture. Plenty of schools draw a big cut off line at the median. Look at last year's graph for UGA, IU-B, Northwestern, etc. It's not real tough to guess the median.justadude55 wrote:

The median is posted each year. It was 170 two years ago, it was 170 last year and its going to 170 again next year. UVa seems wholly uninterested in boosting their stats. 3.85/170 for life

I am also debating whether UVA's Mac bundle is worth it. Any opinion or idea about whether UVA's bundle is better than getting a Lenovo ThinkPad t410 (I think that even the i7's are cheaper than the current UVA Mac bundle when on sale)? Which gives more bang for the buck, the durable ThinkPad, or the ostensibly virus free Mac? Oh, and how is the IT help desk at actually helping students who purchase one of their bundles when they have problems? Any input would on this would be great, I am thinking that It'll come down to one of these two machines for me.YCrevolution wrote:I'd say a majority of TLSers buy their own computer. Thank you, which do most people suggest the Dell or the Mac? I am suprised to see the Dell being more expensive. It is just based off of preference?

... something's telling me they target their current cycle's median based on last year's rate of admits over the median who attended vs. withdrew... If they could bump it to 171 without giving the shirt off their back via schollies or small classes sizes I have a sneaking suspicion they would.Doritos wrote:The median...It was 170 two years ago, it was 170 last year and its going to 170 again next year. Re: UVA Class of 2014
Anyone looking for a place to live next year?
I have a 1BR/1BA that I am renting right now that will be available in Arlington Court sometime in late June. It is tough to get these apartments... I tried getting one off of craigslist last year and it was gone the next day in Arlington... I was lucky I found this one.
Rent is about $700.00... I don't know if my landlord will raise the rent.
But: I am buying a place in cville with my financee (to be hubby) next year. TLS has helped me so much I just thought I might let you know!
If you want more info. PM me.
