Getting at 8:40PM, y'all, into Midway.
This thread encourages me. It's nice to know that if the world were ending, there would still be someone, somewhere, posting lolcats about it.

Setting aside the fact that tossing out "placement in academia" as just one of many factors to throw on the balance is problematic at a number of levels, the thought that the 5-6 placements from Chicago each year over the 2-3 placements from Penn each year are a sufficient reason to pick Chicago over Penn is not the wisest factor. Chicago places more Supreme Court clerks than Penn, too, but that's not a very good reason to go there.gbpackerbacker wrote:The big draws to chicago for me right now are it's [sic] superior placement in academia

Ahem. I will be needing updates of the weekend on a semi-regular basis. You may relay these through Dulcatis or Kiki. TYIA.

Just checked into my hotel! Going to go walk around and find some lunch. Can't wait for my bus journey later as I try to make it from downtown to Hyde park all by myself. ( I can see Northewestern from my hotel)

Are people going to the diversity reception tonight? I'm working today and need to be in Hyde Park for a dinner later, but haven't decided whether I should go to the diversity reception.

Sorry, missed this post, but my answer would have been a definite yes. I'm not sure how one person can be "diverse" anyway.oxford_don wrote:
Even if I am not diverse in any way?

UChi cares about more than just racial/ethnic diversity, I'm sure you bring something to the table!

Both schools have low numbers because most people hired into academia are not hired 9 months out of school. Rather, they work in various types of law then go into academia. Chicago, however, prepares its alumni for and places them in more academic-- and more prestigious-- positions throughout their careers.

Re: Chicago Class of 2014
No. I don't mean 9 months at graduation. I mean, if you go look at Professor Solumn's entry-level hiring statistics, or the statistics at the PrawfsBlawg (as in, the places that report on annual academic hiring), you'll see that for each academic hiring year, for all people several years out, Chicago places 5 or 6 people a year, and Penn places 2 or 3 people a year. The numbers are extraordinarily small. There are only about 150 entry-level hires in the academy each year, and the bulk of them go to Yale and Harvard. That's why the numbers are so low.gbpackerbacker wrote:Both schools have low numbers because most people hired into academia are not hired 9 months out of school.
