No employment talk. There were plenty of Q&A things. But then again I didn't think they would say anything unprompted. OSU didn't on their ASW. Do others?

I asked a current 3L how many students she thought had a job lined up right now and she said "probably about 30%." Said she figured that number would jump a little at graduation, and then a bigger bump once people were admitted to the bar. Said ITE, 30% was a fairly good number at this point in her eyes. I'm guessing, but would that mean large/larger/larger-ish firms? Do small firms offer kids still in school?

Some other highlights from the night socializing...3L (or maybe 2L) said to me later on (much drunker in evening) "Don't come to law school if you don't want to be a lawyer. Some people hate their lives here... though you'll get that at any school" and another: "This school will give you (access to?) the Midwest, Chicago, DC." Another professed their love of the "median lifestyle," which I supposed meant a lot of boozing and hitting on undergrads :D Much of this was drunk talk... in vino veritas? :D

I thought the current students were pretty honest about the school, the prospects, and were happy to give advice. Even when things weren't as rosy.

I fell in love with the median lifestyle this
Weekend (only for the weekend/before we start). I felt awful during the ASW and I am
Sure many of you probably looked at me
And thought 'bottom of the class material.'

Indiana isn't exactly forthcoming with employment data online either. I'm not surprised.

Oh, also the first 3L (with the 30% answer) said that she thought her class was doing better because "they knew what worked, what didn't work [ITE]" compared to previous class.

As far as Indiana being forthcoming about employment data online, this page is two clicks away from the home page:

http://apps.law.indiana.edu/careers/where-are-they-now/

"Career Development" -> "Placement statistics"

That said, those graphs are a definitely misleading. Is that what you mean? They average IU's 2003-2009 data in comparison to NALP 2008 data, and list median salary ranges for a variety of firm sizes but don't say how many are in each category. Though there is a list of employers for all of the classes, separated by state.

It seemed to me like the orange sheets were mentioned because it made the process easier.

No e-mails and recording of information, just a quick signature.

Also, I don't really think it's surprising that employment stats weren't really discussed.

This is an academic facility first and foremost, not a job placement service (that is just one portion of the overall process), and I thought they did a nice job emphasizing the quality of the education one could receive at Maurer. They brought in alumni who were successful in various fields and in various locations--I thought that was a nice touch, and I also liked that they gave us the contact information of these alumni.

Also, I didn't see employment statistics mentioned at the other admitted students day I visited, Wake Forest, so, in my small sample, it doesn't seem like a common point of discussion for that type of event.

Hm, I've only visited schools not during ASDs and I guess it's never really brought up on tours. I guess I am just always the rude person who asks.

Well, I was fine the first time they mentioned it. After 3-4 times, though, it got a little annoying. Combined with the "class is half full" comment later, I felt like I was being pressured, which wasn't appreciated. It was the only thing I could nit-pick.

I asked almost every current student I talked to about employment. They were all really honest about the situation and the 2L/3ls had different things to say.

My driver was a 3L and I asked what she was doing after graduation and she goes " Like most of my class, I don't have a job." My biggest concern before I visited was the employment prospects coming out of IU-B, so hearing this from the first person I talk to at IU-B scared me. The 3Ls seemed like they got the short end of the stick in the hiring process because of the time they came into law school.

The 2L class seemed like they're doing a lot better. One of the 2L's told me around 70% of the class had internships for the summer but not all of them were paid. She said that around 40% of the class have firm SA positions. It seemed to me that a good amount of the 2L's I talked to had SA positions in Chicago. I also talked to a median 2L that had a SA position in Chicago that says it was all about his networking.

The thing I kept hearing from the current students that I have trouble believing is that Chicago and DC are the 2nd biggest markets for IU-B students. I can believe that Chicago is the 2nd biggest market but I have trouble believing DC is up there.

The orange sheets kind of reminded me of the follow the herd mentality. It was like everyones doing it, you should too. I do think that they really impressed a lot of the students that attended SLD. There were a lot of students who ended up committing by the end of the weekend. Maybe it was more because everyone went out, partied and had a good time and was like this place is awesome. But their presentation was great during the day and it was impressive.

To the usual people who type on this form, it was a great time meeting you and discussing plans. I typed this on my iPhone, hence the awful grammar.

Well... IUB has never been right next door to a major market. The closest is Chicago, of course, so I'm sure they have a strong alumni base there, but others went East. I know my dad has a number of good friends from law school who are all in DC and I know a lot of Kelley alumni in NY (where the business jobs are), so it makes sense to me that there'd be a contingent of Maurer alumni in DC (where the law jobs are). I can't confirm it, of course, but I could believe it.

I'm so sad I couldn't make it this weekend! I was planning on it until I remembered I had signed up for store days at work back in October. So, instead I went to Cincinnati for work. Boo. Glad you guys had a good time.

cowgirl_bebop - I'm so glad you're already a super star. :) I love Midwesterners who move to NYC and New Yorkers who move to the Midwest.

BTW, Im looking for roomies as well.

I found this place that is downtown and apparently near the Hilton we were all at. Im in the beginning stages of getting info about the place but it is very nice as far as I have seen. PM me for details.

Also, if that place falls through, I'd still be looking for 1-2 ppl to share a place with. Gender does not matter.

Was it that obvious? Yes, due to my multiple flight cancellations I have decided to make a user name for this forum.

The biggest d-bag I saw was this guy who was standing in the middle of the crowd during the student organization fair. Everyone was meeting people and networking, really trying to find out if IU is right for them and this guy was just oblivious to it all. He just had a dumb look on his face while sucking "nerds" candy out of a box into his mouth. This guy was fourth tier all the way. :D
I did spend most of my weekend hungover/drunk so I might be a bit off based. I still see IUB as a definite option for me and I would say it will be 50/50 come decision time.
This was a dead giveaway

Ha. I don't think I met any of you guys. If you met me you probably know it by my username. But maybe not. Saturday night was pretty hazy...

cowgirl_bebop, I sat a few rows in front of you in that crim pro breakout, so I think I remember you and your coherent answers. :) I should have connected the dots when you volunteered Gil's full name at the start of the discussion -- makes sense you would be the one with a Dwight Howard avatar :)

Also beidoun, I saw someone with your last name on our hotel list, and I figured that had to be you...right? I'm not sure I stood out in any interesting ways, at least until the very end of the night.

if any incoming 1L summer starter needs an apt, PM me. looking to sublet starting 6/1, furnished, could retain it for the school year. 15 minute walk to the law school, good building, parking space.

If any girl is looking for a place that is a bit nicer and a little farther away from the school (about 2-3 miles) PM me.

Yeah that is me. I didn't think about how much of a give away my username is when I made this account and I really hate making usernames up.

I do not think we met, I met another guy from nashville but he lives in STL now.
