Quick question: does the NYU exam software work with Macs? Or does it require us to dual boot? I wanna get a Mac, but I really really don't wanna dual-boot it.

Re: NYU Class of 2014
Did well (~5%). It's difficult to give advice as everyone's different. I'll just tell you all what I did and let you ask questions as you all see fit. I tried to do 0L prep (read Getting to Maybe, some of the Delaneys, and got halfway through LEEWS). Honestly, it didn't help at all; mainly because I forgot it all. As for what I did: I did go to every class. I did read the assigned reading before every class. I did fully brief all of the cases prior to each class. I did take in-depth notes both on the reading and in class. I did have a study group that met to discuss practice exams toward the end of each semester. I didn't rely on supplements, but I did refer to them occasionally for murky issues. My mindset when I went through the semester was that when it came time to make my outlines, I didn't want to have to re-read anything. I wanted to just use my copious reading and lecture notes and create an outline using those.
So, the above advice is probably no different from others who did well. However, I would attribute a lot of my success to mental and physical health. Doing well in law school is less about memorization and more about analysis. Therefore, it's important to be mentally sharp. To do so, I made sure I got ~8 hours of sleep a night even during finals. I exercised regularly. I hung out with friends outside of law school as often as I could. And I made sure to do fun things each day (shoot the shit with friends, play games, etc.). I can't emphasize this section enough. Because of this, I left 1L happy, not burned out, and successful.
Anyways, I'll be happy to answer any questions you all have.

Damn, congrats. You just laid out the dream of each person in this thread: Finish in the top of the class without losing your mind.hopefullaw27 wrote:Did well (~5%). . .
Did you follow any TLS guide to 1L success? Draw from multiple guides? Just wing it?
Did you refer to old outlines or exams? You say you made your own outlines, but were you checking them against those from previous years?
Any advice regarding budgeting time?
Sorry to bombard you with questions right off the bat. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Has anyone here looked into private loans? I'm going to try to figure out tomorrow what the rates with my parents co-signing will be. Grad PLUS rates are way too high and I can't see myself staying in LRAP eligible employment for 10 years.

Anyone know of or recommend any affordable hotels around the area?

I stayed at the Comfort Inn in Chelsea with my mother when she was being motherly and it went well.
Price was not outrageous but still high, it would be more affordable to stay outside of Manhattan.

Is there some sort of guide or FAQ for accepting loans? Regarding LRAP, etc...I'm confused and will probably end up just calling the financial aid office...but if there are resources I'm missing I'd like to go through them first.

Re: NYU Class of 2014
Yeah, I stayed at one of these in Brooklyn over ASW with some relatives who came to do touristy things. All told, the price was pretty reasonable, and it was a block from the D and a couple other subway lines, if you're looking for subway access.neyaae wrote:I stayed at the Comfort Inn in Chelsea with my mother when she was being motherly and it went well.

I talked with them for an extended period of time on Friday morning and got most of the deets on LRAP. If you have any specific questions, I can probably try to give you an idea of what's going on.neyaae wrote:Is there some sort of guide or FAQ for accepting loans? Re: NYU Class of 2014
so signing up for direct deposit is just done on the bursar account page (esuite or whatever), right?
also, anyone know if you did the loan counseling and signed the mpn's before formally accepting the loans on albert, whether or not you have to do them again?

I think that's the correct order to do them...as far as I know. And yeah, DD is somewhere in that bursar messcruelestgame wrote:so signing up for direct deposit is just done on the bursar account page (esuite or whatever), right?

^ thanks very much. sorry, but one last question...the packet says to return the "tuition payment" with the large white return envelope marked "JD Enrollment Materials" but mine does not include that phrase...it's addressed to the committee on admisions...maybe i threw that out by accident?
oh and is a statement of account just the screen showing the balance due, since we don't have any billing statements yet?

I was wondering about this as well. It seems really silly to print out a screen capture of our account balance only to write, "Loans pending" on the top before sending it in by mail. Honestly, who does things by mail anymore?

The packet's pretty useless if you plan to pay for your tuition and room/board with loans.whathojeeves wrote:Has anyone else not gotten the packet still? Everything it tells you you can figure out just by looking at Alpert.

The "tuition payment" where you write your loans pending thing has to come through the envelope that's sent with the packet...although I suppose if you don't mind paying for postage you could probably just send one yourself.
