At which point, if you bought it the 1st year and held on to it for 3 years you would derive more utility than only possessing it for 1 or 2 years.sojuteacher wrote:Anyone still considering the new grad? I haven't lived in a dorm for a long time -- but at this point, seeing as I won't get a chance to visit before school start, and wanting to live really close to campus (I spent my undergrad in the library), I'm considering it. Plus, tracking down and buying furniture would be a pain and additional cost of living in an apt.
And on that note, I'm going to go crawl away and study my economics.

This was kind of my plan, too. But the 2BRs are so cheapppp. I'm torn. Ahhhhhhhhhh.Kili wrote:The difference in 1-2 years of devaluation is marginal at best.sojuteacher wrote:although the resell value of the furniture would be higher if I only use it for a year or two before I graduate :-p<3
I think my plan is probably going to be to live expensively at Regents or Along first year and then dirt cheap with roomies year 2 and 3. I'd rather have everything go as smoothly as possible my first year, and I can't imagine getting a roomie that stresses me out or a landlord that is crap. I would rather mitigate the stress of living conditions as much as possible and Regents/Alon may be pricey but at least they're safe bets.

Eh yeah, when my living is basically going to be financed by loans, I'm definitely tempted to go cheap and lean. But then again I have been kind of soured on roommates from the bad experiences in UG. So yeah, it would take a pretty heavy price difference for me to justify living with a stranger as a 1L. But <3 to that 3 br, it looks really cool.

I can deal with anyone for a year but mostly I just want to live somewhere for 3 years. I've moved 8 times in 7 years, and I'm tired of it! And with roommates, someone wants to move, or someone gets engaged, or someone drops out/transfers/leaves dirty dishes all over the house/does coke on the couch naked/throws huge house parties during exams, you name it..Muenchen wrote:Eh yeah, when my living is basically going to be financed by loans, I'm definitely tempted to go cheap and lean. Exactly. Last straw for me was a roommate who decided last minute in October to go to China for the Spring and wanted to stick me with the rent or find a stranger for me to live with. It got ugly..... (But I promise, I was/am the good roommate, not the jackass)arism87 wrote:I can deal with anyone for a year but mostly I just want to live somewhere for 3 years. Back to this, I would say slightly better odds than recruiting a non-TLS 1L, assuming some level of self-selection and the existence of being part of TLS being indicative of a certain personality type which fits well.Kili wrote:Ummmm, elephant in the room. Hahaha true story but it didn't happened to me- happened to my friend. I mean hey, if your roommate trashes your apartment and passes out naked on the couch.. the coke is fair game, right? That was my advice, anyway.Kili wrote:True story? If so, can we be friends next year? To all you people complaining about the price of Regents. I recommend you take a look at rent near Harvard/Stanford/Columbia/NYU. Im absolutely giddy about the possibility of paying less than $1500/month for a 1br.

anyone considering using student-space? Seems like it could be helpful and you get $100 after paying first month rent.
Is there anyone out there with experience with the company that could weigh in?

I def. have to be with roommates, can't afford studio rate, and regents is looking really good right now. Although that 1350, 3br arism showeds looks really nice.

Some of those padmapper apts are nice, but remember that they're south of the law school. I thought I read somewhere that anywhere south of the law school or west of drexel is somewhat of a no-no in terms of safety (maybe in that "thinking of moving to Hyde Park" thread).

I think 61st is fine but you probably don't want to go too far south of that.trudat15 wrote:Some of those padmapper apts are nice, but remember that they're south of the law school. Edit: You can turn on a crime statistics overlay in Padmapper. If you haven't seen it it is worth a look.
