My gf was agitated when I told her I was going alone. Just tell your SO that you will be sitting in on classes and talking to professors and looking at the library and whatever other stuff no one not interested in going to law school would be interested in. Of course mine has already been to Ann Arbor so she doesn't need to see the overall vibe of the town.

Yeap...that's my exact concern. I'd hate to have her take a couple days off from work to spend most of the time alone. Based on the action packed schedule, it seems that's what would happen.

We visited together last year and the visit was really important for her. She didn't come to all of the scheduled events (mock class, career panel, etc), but she did come to the social events (lunch and dinner meet and greets with other students, campus tour, wine reception with the profs). Coming to Ann Arbor, having a chance to check out some apartments, and just generally learning more about the school was good for both of us. If you have a spouse or significant other, really consider having them come with you - this will be the next three years of their life as well and you want to make sure that they're comfortable with the decision and can see a life here for themselves as well.

It's pretty awesome to watch a football game in the Big House (yes, even when we suck ). And while it may seem trivial now, if you're any kind of a sports fan, it's a great way to spend an afternoon in a way that you couldn't really get at any other top law school.
3. The administration is top-notch and very proactive from everything I can tell. It's a good peak into the school's culture by seeing how they do ASW. It's very organized, educational, and fun.

But seriously, thanks for validating my list. I feel better about leaning toward Michigan

I've never been to UVA, but judging by what my friends from UVA have told me, the sports culture here is definitely more vigorous and the excitement in the air around AA the day of a big game isn't something that you'll find to near this degree at UVA (point of reference: their football stadium can seat 61.5k while ours seats 110k - and it's often filled). Granted, UVA does have a major sports program and if you wanted to watch a football game on a Saturday there, you can, but it's just not going to be the same as at Michigan (btw, as law students, you get great seats - this picture during the team's warmups, http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15951/2010-10-1 ... 37_404.jpg , was taken only two rows closer than where I was seated for the game).

I empathize with your dilemma. I usually encourage people to get some diversity out of their education (e.g. if you went to UMich for UG, then it might be a good idea to go to UVA Law if it's an absolute tie), but that certainly isn't dispositive. Good luck with your decision.

Thanks! I definitely think it's time to move on, but UVA is 2 hours from home and while I don't go back often, it's certainly nice to be able to. They've also offered me a bit more money. Ah well, I will visit both.

Edit: Make sure you check out the bus route before you sign a lease. Some buses only run every 30 min-1hr and may require a transfer.

I am, but I'm a miles whore so am probably flying United via Chicago. Need to pull myself together and buy a ticket. Are you taking the shuttle from Detroit?

Not really, you can buy a yellow pass but you have to park by the stadium and take the school bus in. The city operates a park and ride on S. State St. that is free. That bus runs every 9-12 min although it doesn't run as late as the school buses do. (You can, however, take a free cab ride to the park & ride after hours.)

To park close you'd have to rent a parking space from someone private off craigslist or something. They usually go for around $100 a month.
