Rent for a 1 bedroom 1 bathroom apartment in "non-ghetto" areas in LA will go from about 1100-2000/month. A studio can go from about 700-1200/month. 2 bedroom 2 bathrooms go for about 1500-3000/month. These are all pretty big ranges, but it varies a lot depending on the specific location and amenities and "niceness" of the unit/bldg itself. Also, these are just my estimates from what I have personally seen. Obviously, if you have roommate(s), you'd be paying a smaller amount of those rent figures. Browse craigslist and see if anything fits your preferences. Also, COL is figured into the total cost of attendance for federal loans you may receive: http://intranet.lls.edu/financialaid/cost.html. I am sure no one wants to max out on that though, if at all avoidable.smittelman6 wrote:Hi all! I'm complete, sitting tight and keeping my fingers crossed
My top two choices right now are Loyola and USD-- I really want to do juvenile or family law. Money will most likely end up being a huge factor for me... for anyone who has started browsing apartments in the area (non-ghetto preferably), do you think it's out of control?
It seems like, from what I've heard, kids in SD are paying between 650-900 a month for a very decent apartment in a nice area, some with amenities (gym pool etc). I know that's out of the question in LA, but should I be expecting to pay 1k a month? Or is it a little bit more reasonable... My biggest worry financially is COL...

FYI: LLS has a classifieds webpage for law students looking for apartments and roommates. I know a few people who met their current roommates this way and are happy with it. Congrats to you all, and hope to see you guys in the fall.

So, who here is planning to go to any of the "Admitted Students" events? LLS sent me some email about some upcoming events, and I think they have an actual "Admitted Students" day event coming up soon.
Which event?

None of the events mentioned in the email really interest me, so I'm not going to be attending any of them. But where did you hear about Admitted Students Day? As far as I know, they haven't given out any information regarding it, besides vague references to that it will happen sometime this Spring. I think last year's was in April or May.

Oh yeah, I remember reading that exact dates should have been posted in January. Can anyone confirm? Way too lazy to dig up my packet right nowJudge Philip Banks wrote:None of the events mentioned in the email really interest me, so I'm not going to be attending any of them. I desperately want to practice in CA and so far, Loyola and Hastings are the only two West Coasters to accept me. I'm definitely weighing my options...if it wasn't for that damn scholarship stipulation it would be a done deal.

Apparently on the New Admits blog (1/7/11 post) there is mention that the "Admitted Students Preview Day" will take place on April 15th. Maybe that is where we saw that info..?

Yeah, mid Jan. I've actually heard back from some decent schools. But loyola is still my top. Going there would be perfect for my situation. I read on the other loyola thread that they are not very prone to negotiating scholarships. This may be a problem

also waiting, also applied mid-jan, and can't go without the 87k. if i get in i will be one happy camper, although i'm still split right now 50/50 between LLS and USD... it's very difficult to guage job prospects between the two since they're in different markets...gothamm wrote:awesome![]()

Anyone try negotiating on scholarships with them yet? I'm wondering how likely they are to increase an 87k scholarship.

Re: Loyola Law School Class of 2014
Not very likely... The scholarships bigger than 87k are essentially full rides (from what I've heard). They only give out a very small handful (think <1% of admits) of full rides. Give negotiating a shot - it's not like they'll take the 87k away from you or anything, so you don't have anything to lose I suppose. Just don't get your hopes up, because they most likely will not go over 87k.WinterIsComing wrote:Anyone try negotiating on scholarships with them yet? Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted so far. I too am in at Loyola!
Is anyone else really concerned about the housing situation? I know I am, especially since I'm from the East Coast.

Any east coasters considering Loyola LA? I'm from California originally, but I've been living on the east coast for over 6 years and feel more like an east coaster than a west coaster... I'm a little nervous about coming back... :O

Not me, I live East of Loyola, but only by about 20 miles : p
The area hasn't changed too much in 6 years though in my opinion. Have you heard anything from Loyola yet?

Yes, they have accepted me (yay!) and I actually think I'm going to attend. Finally, I won't be living 3,000 miles away from my family! Does anyone have any tips on housing/ areas of town to live in? I only know kid stuff-(ie museums, beaches, concerts, etc...) nothing helpful as an adult!

K-Town isn't bad since it's in middle of everything (between Santa Monica and Downtown). However, as far as the price goes, it's bit pricey. But then again, everything in LA is pricey these days.. I think finding a roomie is the best way to cut down the rental fee.

Going to be attending the Student Host event tomorrow. For those that are out-of-state and cannot get all the info that they would like or want, are there any questions or requests that I could help you with?
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
