wow thanks for the awesome info! It is definitely great to know where all the good/bad neighborhoods are + I had absolutely no idea about the zoning stuff (although it shouldn't be a problem for me). So far I haven't really considered roommates as I have become accustomed to having my own place but the cost savings is enticing......cml wrote:Location:
In my opinion, if you're looking to rent a house, you will want to live in 5 points. This is an area of town surrounding S Lumpkin and S Milledge Avenue. Athens is very low-income, so this is one of the only areas that is away from the ghetto/projects. You want to avoid most of the homes North of broad street, Northeast of broad, and on Baxter street. A lot of the east-side neighborhoods are safe, but they can be far from the school.
What to think about:
Athens is in the South, but it is more large-town than suburban area, so a lot of the homes are older (30 years or older). Because of this, a lot of them have car ports, only one bathroom, and are in need of renovation. Others are great, so you definitely want to look before you sign. Also, Athens has zoning. So, 3 unrelated individuals are not allowed to live together in a house zoned for single-family use. People get away with it all the time, but people have been kicked out before, especially if they live in a neighborhood with families.
Rents:
If the house is not run-down and has a decent location, it will be $300-$600 per person rental per month, excluding utilities. It all depends on location and number of people renting. For one person renting a house, expect $1000+ per month. IF you are male, I know a couple of grad students looking to rent a house for next year.
Also, go hokies!

it seems that scholly info this year has been a mixed bag. There are some that received it enclosed with their acceptance letter and others that receive it later (which I think has been more common). For me personally, I received my scholarship letter approximately two weeks after my acceptance letter (and cool car decal). So don't lose hope too quickly!justadude55 wrote:Just found out I got in with an ASW invite. I got nothing in the mail - nothing, and the site just says congratulations. How are scholarships disclosed? I am very confused by the entire thing.
Strongly considering it. I went to the admissions event at King & Spalding in ATL last Thursday and visited the school itself on Monday, so another drive down to GA might be a stretch. ASW would be clutch as for meeting other people and possibly starting to coordinate housing.hokie wrote:anyone attending March ASW? If any # of TLS people are attending it should be a good time. I was leaning towards attending IUb's ASW on the 26th because they would pay for flight/hotel but since UGA is more of my #1 right now I think missing out on UGA's ASW would suck.plt06 wrote:Strongly considering it. My sister actually lives in Augusta, so I became interested in UGA because of that, and the fact that it's a very good school. I also wanted to goto a top 100 school, so my choices in Florida were limited to UF, FSU, and Miami. I visited the campus back in October and I really liked it, and really liked Athens too. Plus, I'm actually looking forward to getting out of Florida. My #2 is actually UF, because of the in-state tuition, but I haven't heard back from them yet. I just heard from Stetson yesterday and I'm on the wait list. Which is weird to me since I got accepted at UGA, but I guess they have different standards.Sandro wrote:how did UGA end up your #1 choice from FL/USF undergrad. Kind of rare to see another USF undergrad because most people usually end up at Stetson, Florida Coastal, Barry, Nova, or St Thomas/Ave Maria.

I go to UGA for ug and live downtown- the only times I ever have to drive are to go to the grocery store & gym. I recommend checking out 909 Broad St. Apartments & Gameday Condominiums. Both are downtown and a short walk to the law school, library, etc. 909 has a lot more students (both law and undergrad), but Gameday is much quieter because there are strict noise regulations & not many people live there year round.EricCharles wrote:I already decided that I will be attending UGA Law this fall. I'm still waiting to hear back from some schools but UGA was my number one choice. The problem I'm having now is finding a place to live. I don't really know anyone in Athens, and I'd like to have to drive my car as infrequently as possible. So, I'd prefer to live near downtown and the North side of campus.
Does anyone have any recommendations as to some nice places to live in this area of town, and also is anyone looking for a roommate? I'm 24, male, and from Florida. I went to USF for undergrad.
Does the property management group at Gameday rent out units or do you have to find individual condo owners to rent? As much as I like Athens, and as awesome as Gameday looks, I'm not sure I'm going to be able to part with the cash to buy a condo, haha.sstufken wrote:I go to UGA for ug and live downtown- the only times I ever have to drive are to go to the grocery store & gym. Thanks for the info! I'll definitely talk to them, though $1600 is a bit out of my price range, haha. Does anybody have any good recommendations for property management groups that rent out houses in Athens? I've been looking online and it seems like quite a mixed bag with a lot of the offerings being a bit further from campus than I'd prefer. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!mreid27 wrote:@plt06
According to a Gameday manager about three weeks ago, there was only one unit available for long-term leasing (1 BR for $1600/mo., yikes). She said more units would probably free up before fall, but the whole thing was pretty speculative.
The condos are awesome and utilities/cable/internet are included in the rent, so it's still worth a try. I just didn't want miss out on other places while waiting to maybe find a room at Gameday.
A studio apartment/efficiency unit will likely be well under 6o0 sq feet. Also, if you cook bacon in a space that small with poor ventilation, there is a solid chance that your whole apartment will smell like bacon for hours. Whether or not that is a plus or minus to you, I dunno.bartleby wrote:how small exactly is a studio apartment? if i make bacon in the morning, will my bed smell like bacon
