Things change, the student body is surprisingly much more sociable and cordial than you'd think. Remember, you go to law school for classmates...Non-Chalant1 wrote:Just by the looks of this thread it seems that if I go to CLS there will be no sense of community. CLS 1L here. It's a big class so sure, half the class might be in-and-out students, but the other half (at least) is DEFINITELY big on hanging out. I live off campus because that's my preference but I still get lunch with people and attend events often enough. I just like that home/school separation someone else mentioned

You're taking that from a pretty small sample size (2 or 3 TLS NYers who want to commute). I'll say this I'm three years out of school and not looking to re-live college but I do want to be near campus, meet people etcNon-Chalant1 wrote:Just by the looks of this thread it seems that if I go to CLS there will be no sense of community. I was under the impression that most people lived on-campus/very close to school and that people were pretty sociable. While I do want to live off-campus, I definitely don't plan on being an in-and-out student and am really interested in making friends, going to events, etc. If anything, I feel like living off-campus will give me more of an excuse to hang out, it's not like I can run to my apartment whenever I have a free moment.

All right cool. This is a little more reassuring.ma456 wrote:I was under the impression that most people lived on-campus/very close to school and that people were pretty sociable. Word, I don't want to give anyone the impression that if I go to Columbia, because I don't want to live near the school I don't care about building a community of friends there. There are a lot of reasons why I might not want to live on/right off campus, but I am for sure invested in making friends, hanging out socially, etc.ma456 wrote:I was under the impression that most people lived on-campus/very close to school and that people were pretty sociable. Just submitted my app for UAH housing. This is becoming more and more real.

How early are you all submitting your UAH apps? Does that have to be done only after putting down an official deposit? Because I'm going to be playing the money waiting game.

Have recent admits still not received this "brick" of materials people are talking about? I received my VCE on 2/2 (postmark 1/28) and have received the admitted students binder and the guide to NYC, but no fun brick of materials.

CLS 2L here. This isn't a totally incorrect impression. Some people are in-and-out, but you're going to find socially inept people at every school (especially law school, which by nature attracts socially dysfunctional people). Beginning with CLS Orientation Week (featuring open bars and events held for CLS students which EVERYONE attends), you'll start to meet your 400+ classmates. Everyone eventually finds their "group" as the semester rolls on. I personally have a ton of close friends at the school, and we always hang out in our free time. My boyfriend and I host "movie nights" for our "core" group of CLS friends every Thursday night (we're talking 15+ people crammed into our living room), after which we often go off to the bars nearby to meet up with other classmates.Non-Chalant1 wrote:Just by the looks of this thread it seems that if I go to CLS there will be no sense of community. On a related note, being former TLS-ers ourselves (at least, barring the fact that we love to visit these forums to provide admits with advice!), we'll probably be hosting a party at our place during ASW!

1/24 postmark and still no brick to date. I'm starting to suspect my mailman just can't fit the thing into the mailbox and decided to throw it away.chasgoose wrote:Have recent admits still not received this "brick" of materials people are talking about? ^ That is awesome. This is really the best of what TLS can be - thank you for giving helpful advice about your school and being a friendly social person. Hope I can make that party!

If there is one thing I've learned from Columbia threads on TLS its never trust the mailman - he will steal your VCE and crush your dreams.jman77 wrote:1/24 postmark and still no brick to date. No brick yet for me either but my postmark was later.

Checking in. Although I was originally hesitant about living in NYC, Columbia is really starting to grow on me. Barring HYS, I might be here next year!

I was already planning to be at Columbia for 3/4-3/6 for my sister's senior thesis so I will be attending the first weekend. I'm glad I get to go to the ASW instead of bitterly looking at it from far away...

Just joined the FB group too! Barring a berkeley acceptance this week, I'll probably be at Columbia next year unless I hate NYC. (I've never actually been in the city, only driven through it on the way to Boston). I still can't believe I got in hahahaha. And all of you seem really friendly
