If you're going to do a Happy Hour, you should wait til Friday. The Backyard (a bar on the Corner) has Happy Hour beers starting at 25 cents (starting at 5 PM and increasing 25 cents every 20 minutes) on Fridays.

It is generally my policy not to go to bars that didn't exist when I went to UG there. I guess if I'm going to go to law school at UVA I'll have to reevaluate, lolgladiator wrote:If you're going to do a Happy Hour, you should wait til Friday. There was a couple kegs at the BBQ last year if I recall correctly, also pretty good wine and bottled beer at the supreme court clerk reception on Saturday.I'll send a pm as well...Also I'm hopeful that there will be "drinks" at the BBQ.

I don't think any of the professors were there for the BBQ, and at the reception everyone was trying to be all intellectual-like for that sort of behavior, what with the august presence of the few, the revered, the ELECT, the supreme court clerks.ksimon2007 wrote:So supsicious does that mean that Professors are game for a few keg stands?

Going off on the Thursday-Friday tentative schedules, events seem to be pretty packed, though there is a 15 min break in the afternoon to go apartment-hunting.McDeere wrote:Does anyone know if there will be time during ASW to look at apts or is the schedule pretty packed?

I would just go super early on Thursday or stay an extra day on Saturday to look at apartments and Charlottesville in general.

How do people typically find roommates for 1L? I'll be at the Admitted Students thing next week but other than that, no real ideas...

15 minutes? Are you serious? I'm supposed to find an apartment in 15 minutes? lolbluecrab5448 wrote:Going off on the Thursday-Friday tentative schedules, events seem to be pretty packed, though there is a 15 min break in the afternoon to go apartment-hunting.McDeere wrote:Does anyone know if there will be time during ASW to look at apts or is the schedule pretty packed?![]()

Re: UVA Class of 2014
Having done two separate days of apartment hunting in C'ville, I can definitely assert that you need at least a full day to do it right. There's a lot of bullshit out there, and just a few landlords who aren't full of it. The C'ville real estate market took a huge hit in the last year and a half, but there's a lot of landlords who seem to think that they should still be able to rent out their properties at 2008 prices. The fact is that it is a renters' market but most of the brokers/landlords try to sell it like it is a landlords' market, and probably will continue to do so until around June. They can do this because it is a college town, but from what I understand, enrollment is down at the University and not every unit will be leased.
Caveat-I was looking for a two bedroom, preferably in a free standing home, for my wife and I. I have a car so this will work for me. If you are dead set on living at a walkable distance from North Grounds, then you are pretty much locked into Jeffersonian/Ivy Gardens from what I understand.
Tips: Do a lot of homework before you go. Don't be afraid to ask for things, like a reduction in rent, or if they would keep the rent the same for three years. Most landlords hate showing properties so if you tell them you would like to live in a unit for three years, they will respond favorably.
Don't let yourself get hard sold. I've rented apartments in DC and SF (probably the bloodiest rental market in the country, save Manhattan) and the hard sell I was getting from one broker was just absurd. It's a college town, not a rent control city. Every unit was going to be shown to at least three other couples THAT DAY! (Mind you, this was in February) I finally told her straight up that I was looking for my apartment and did not care how much more it was going to be shown.
