Hmm, I just talked to a broker, who said it will be much harder to find a lease starting in August than in September. Doesn't orientation start in August? I don't want to have to pay for a hotel for a week or two.

I've been looking too, and all I've been able to find is this, which isn't very helpful (although bathroom quality could be important to some people?)...moneko wrote: have you found any good pictures of the inside of the dorms yet? all i can find on the official website are unhelpful floorplans...

It matters to me. The bathrooms in North Hall are in very bad shape.ads222 wrote:I've been looking too, and all I've been able to find is this, which isn't very helpful (although bathroom quality could be important to some people?)...moneko wrote: have you found any good pictures of the inside of the dorms yet? all i can find on the official website are unhelpful floorplans...

I've been browsing for off-campus, affordable options, there just don't seem to be many - not nearby at any rate. I hate the thought of dorm living as well, but will probably end up trying it for 1L since it's cheap. As for pictures, I haven't found any, but will hopefully get to snap some when I'm there this weekend.moneko wrote:are you thinking of doing gropius for 1L? as loathe as i am do dorm again i think i'm going to, cuase it'll be impossible to do a 1bed/studio for that little rentpix wrote:Is Gropius as cheap as it gets - including nearby, off-campus options?

Wow. You guys hate roommates so much that you would rather live in a dorm than split a 2br?pix wrote:I've been browsing for off-campus, affordable options, there just don't seem to be many - not nearby at any rate. I would much prefer to split an apt. if I could find one at a comparable price with a reasonable commute.

Outside of gropius, the rest of HRES prices for splitting a 2br are comparable to the dorm prices.pix wrote:I would much prefer to split an apt. if I could find one at a comparable price with a reasonable commute.

Somerville and Allston seem to be cheaper than HRES/Cambridge, but you will probably have to pay a broker's fee. I think between the broker's fee and needing to come out to visit places off-campus (which will probably cost at least $2,000), HRES would wind up being a better deal for me, even with the more expensive monthly rent, but I just cannot bring myself to leave one of my cats with my mom.

not at all :X just scared of strangers. had a terrible roommate in ug and coming home every day to passive aggressive cold war of unwashed dishes made me upset to the point where i couldn't study at home... i don't know if i want to take the risk of shackin up with someone i don't know well?tkgrrett wrote:Wow. Is there another financial aid panel or Q&A with Minow coming up for this ASW?
Can one of you admits ask why they thought it necessary to raise tuition by 5% in this economy?
"Why are the yearly increases in HLS tuition outpacing inflation? Why, ITE, do you feel justified in increasing tuition, but cutting the number and quality of available courses?"

They will just tell you that 5% is on the very low end for private schools(which it is) and isnt that far out of line with inflation.Objection wrote:Is there another financial aid panel or Q&A with Minow coming up for this ASW?

~15% increase vs ~7% inflation over the last 3 years.tkgrrett wrote:They will just tell you that 5% is on the very low end for private schools(which it is) and isnt that far out of line with inflation.Objection wrote:Is there another financial aid panel or Q&A with Minow coming up for this ASW?

I also just want to hear the justification. Quantity of classes have been cut, quality (subjective, but I think a lot of students agree here) has been cut, and the economy stinks. "Other private schools are doing it, too" is not, imo, an adequate response (although I agree that it's the one they'd give). It seems to be hypocritical to tell us how they understand our pain with this economy but then raise tuition 5%.
Side note: They still haven't shot an email or even a tweet at current students letting them know about the raise in tuition.

What do you mean by quality has been cut? Is the administration telling professors to do a bad job?Objection wrote:~15% increase vs ~7% inflation over the last 3 years.tkgrrett wrote:They will just tell you that 5% is on the very low end for private schools(which it is) and isnt that far out of line with inflation.Objection wrote:Is there another financial aid panel or Q&A with Minow coming up for this ASW?

Re: Harvard Law 2014
honestly Gropius isn't the best... BUT it is by far the cheapest... Any split 2br in Cambridge will still be quite a lot more then most of Gropius dorms. You have to move out into Somerville for comparable rates (and a 20 minute walk)tkgrrett wrote:Wow. How's the housing process coming along for all of you (particularly off-campus)? Anyone find any good deals for studios/1BR near school? Still kinda up in the air about what actually constitutes a good deal in the Harvard Square area.

Mind sharing what you're going to pay and the general location of the building?acrossthelake wrote:I wanted to get my apt. hunting and stuff done over spring break (last month) and didn't exactly find a roommate by then. I'm trying to do the same thing with a 1L I know. But I think I'll keep the 1 bedroom my entire time there.acrossthelake wrote:I wanted to get my apt. hunting and stuff done over spring break (last month) and didn't exactly find a roommate by then. I'm an incoming 1L also...probably going to do dorms, but open to HRES or some of the suites in the dorms. Looking for anyone interested in roommates (I think you can add a roommate even after you've applied for housing). I consider myself a fairly clean guy, pretty quiet but easy to get along with. Coming from undergrad but open to meeting everyone! PM if you are looking for roommates as well.

Re: Harvard Law 2014
When you account for the fact that utilities are included, HRES stuff was about as good as it gets for an apt. within walking distance of HLS. $1450-1600/month for a 1 br. about $2200-2400/month for a 2 br.rv11 wrote:How's the housing process coming along for all of you (particularly off-campus)?
