i honestly think that ivy's biggest draw is the social scene. it is the biggest concentration of law students outside of the law school, and you will be able to walk to a huge number of parties if you live there. if that's important to you, then ivy's a good fit. if it's less important, or if you dislike the noise, then it might be too expensive for what they give you.ZiggyPink wrote:There doesn't seem to be a consensus whether a place like Grad Centre is a better choice than Ivy. Ivy is the same price range as Grad Centre if getting a 2 bedroom, but many people seem to be dissatisfied with Ivy apartments and the management. I like that Grad Centre takes care of utilities and internet with one check, and it allows you to rent a single room and not have to worry about splitting rent/utility fees. I guess I am just going to drive down to Cville and make a decision.badwithpseudonyms wrote:Grad Centre is overpriced for what it is. However, if you're too cheap to go for a place in Ivy (or one of the condos on Arlington, for that matter) and you don't get into the Jeffersonian, then it is one of the only options within reasonable walking distance.

The Jeffersonian only says they have one unit available. Does anybody know if the website is actually up to date? I would like to put in an application. Also, where can I find a site to look at the Grad Centre? Trulia has not worked for me. Can you only have a two bedroom at the Grad Centre? Lastly, are the Arlington Court Condos searchable online?

If I'm not mistaken, the Jeffersonian has one unit available to rent right now, not later in June and August when most leases run out.ksimon2007 wrote:The Jeffersonian only says they have one unit available. Thank you boss. My friend at the law school mentioned Arlington Court condos as a potential place to live so I am looking into it.joemoviebuff wrote:If I'm not mistaken, the Jeffersonian has one unit available to rent right now, not later in June and August when most leases run out.ksimon2007 wrote:The Jeffersonian only says they have one unit available. Re: UVA Class of 2014
Sure thing. I will say that based on what I've heard it may be too late to secure a good waitlist spot for the Jeffersonian. I think they had like 40 or 50 units last year and I think they hit that threshold on the waitlist on like January 3rd or something. Can't hurt to try though; it costs nothing to send in an application.ksimon2007 wrote:Thank you boss. Re: UVA Class of 2014
Just at the Jeffersonian. I went through all this last year before I deferred and even in May had no trouble securing a place at the Grad Centre. I believe Ivy had places open too at that time. The reason I'm trying to get into the Jeffersonian this year and the Grad Centre is because of all the positive things I hear about the Jeffersonian on here and other places, and because the lady in charge of helping me with my lease at the Grad Centre was a fucking airhead and took forever to get back to me when I needed to talk to her.paulinaporizkova wrote:you guys are making me seem like i'm behind on this housing thing

To be honest, I just began thinking about it. My friend is a current 1L and we have decided to live together so I told him I would look over everything in coming weekspaulinaporizkova wrote:you guys are making me seem like i'm behind on this housing thing

Re: UVA Class of 2014
I should clarify: Between the two (Grad Centre and Ivy), I personally think it comes down to 1) how much space you need and 2) how much you want to pay. If you think that spending $800+ on an undergrad-style apartment is too much (and I don't necessarily blame you), then $550 for an undergrad-style place (albeit with less personal space) might be the better option. You raise a good point about being able to pay for everything in a single check, although I'm sure you pay a premium for management's handling of your utilities.ZiggyPink wrote:There doesn't seem to be a consensus whether a place like Grad Centre is a better choice than Ivy. In either case, the price reflects the primo location. I personally feel like I'm too old for the awkward "suitemates" arrangement at Grad Centre, but if you're fresh out of undergrad it might not bother you as much. I know people who live there who have never had a problem. Other TLSers can tell you more about Ivy, but in its defense I'll say that a large portion of the class lives there and so while you might hear more problems about management, etc., that's likely due to the overall number of people there. I found the "we'll assign you a unit"-system to be ridiculous, as is their cable.

Naw, there's housing available for a while. Also, there are always people who get a 2br place looking for roommates up until like the summer.paulinaporizkova wrote:you guys are making me seem like i'm behind on this housing thing

Re: UVA Class of 2014
I know a 2L who absolutely loved living in Woodlands her first year. She thought it was actually beneficial to remove herself from the relentlessness of being so close to the school and everyone talking about school 24/7 (cough ivy cough)
So who's with me? Jefferson Ridge? Woodlands? Anyone?

Thinking of hosting for ASW, but maybe it would be cooler to host someone from TLS directly. Any ladies want to stay with the panda?

Will this be the same application as last year? I recall photo, measurements, red or white wine, single, alcohol tolerance, and number of sexual partners all being on the form.flyingpanda wrote:Thinking of hosting for ASW, but maybe it would be cooler to host someone from TLS directly. Re: UVA Class of 2014
Regarding the Grad Centre, I'm in my second year of living there with three other people I met through TLS, and three of the four of us just renewed for our final year in law school. It's a great place if you get along with your suite-mates well, but I wouldn't recommend going in by yourself and being put with whoever else they assign you. I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone may have about the place.

I will be coming March 14-17 (or right around there), the week after spring break
will this be a terrible time to visit?

Re: UVA Class of 2014
There aren't any journal tryouts that weekend before so that's not a concern. I think everyone's final brief is due March 18th for LRW. That will only affect 1Ls, and we have already written our briefs and will just be revising, so it's not going to take up all of our time. I don't think those days are bad really.AssumptionRequired wrote:I will be coming March 14-17 (or right around there), the week after spring breakwill this be a terrible time to visit?

Can anyone offer insight on what 'rush hour' traffic is like down in C'ville? For example, how long would it take to get from 64 to the Leonard Sandridge off-ramp via the 29-250 bypass?

Re: UVA Class of 2014
I'm not sure exactly where you're talking about (I'm GPS dependent) but the only real traffic issue (in my opinion) in Cville is 29- leaving Cville in the afternoon rush hour, and I assume coming in in the morning. The other way doesn't seem to be an issue.sundance95 wrote:Can anyone offer insight on what 'rush hour' traffic is like down in C'ville? 64 is fine, so I am only referring to people who are staying on 29- aka en route to DC. That can be painful. Sounds like you'd be fine
