+1. I have some lag time but my goal is to start looking and wrap up a place to live between June 10-June 20.

My house is gonna be up for rent on August 1st... it's a 3/2 in Midtown West/Lakeview area, about 2 miles from the law school (takes 5 minutes to drive there). Big fenced in backyard, quiet, old (aka pretty and lots of foliage), hardwood floors, recently renovated, nice landlord. It's $500/mo for the big bedroom with private bath, then $450/mo for the other two bedrooms that share a bath. Cable and internet come included, but that's it. It's a tad on the pricey side, but I think you are paying for the location. Just throwing that out there!!

Also, more people need to join the facebook group! I haven't gotten new requests for almost two weeks now, boooo. We'll have to spread the word to join this fall to non-TLSers

Add one more to the TLS group (I'll be joining the Facebook group as well) Deposit went out today. I've lived in Central FL for 15 years and have never been to Tally so finding a place to live is kind of frightening. Anyone have advice for Apartments? I want to be close enough to the school without drowning in undergrads.

Did UG at FSU, wanted to say something about this map.

The avoid with the X in it is a definite. That is a ghetto. So is much of the the brown area directly next to it (I lived somewhere there very cheaply). I do not mean student ghetto, I mean dealers and prostitutes are doing business out in the open (though at least finding weed wasn't hard, since some neighbors were dealers). Some of it isn't so bad (GrandMarc) but it isn't a quiet place to live.

I also lived in that bottom avoid area in the student ghetto area. Loud place to live. Some of that area is real ghetto.

The top left brown area is at least mostly nice as far as I could tell.

There are also some nice places off apalachee.

Have fun in Tallanasty. Go Noles.

I need to get on apartment hunting. Does anybody know how much I can expect to pay for a 1 bedroom in a decent area (just trying to get a baseline).

Also, anybody in need of a nice, clean, female roommate? :)

I'll be going up to Tallahassee sometime next week to look around at apartments. Amarkonthedoor provided some great information. I can forward that along to you if you'd like. I'll be checking out most of the places on that list next week and a few others.

Hey guys, I accepted my offer in April, just been too lazy and busy to get on this. I also just requested to join the facebook group. I'm from Maryland, did my UG in Canada, and really excited for Tally. I'll be heading down around the end of June to find a place. Feel free to add me on facebook, Selorm King Kumah. See you guys around.

ps Thanks for that padmapper site, it's sweet.

While reading through old FSU threads on TLS, I found this cool link to a google map titled Florida State Law City Guide ALL. It is kind of an aggregate/ mashup of comments on popular places in town. Probably pretty cool, if you know nothing about Tallahassee. It doesn't have a ton of info, but it hits some of the highlights (Bella Bella, Bullwinkle's, Club Publix). It asked for a password, but I just hit the red "x" to close the box.

anybody else thinking about doing the one week optional/additional law school orientation? i am thinking about it because it's free and probably helpful, even if only a little bit. but i dunno if it's overkill or not.

Yea, I'm planning on it. I was never great at taking notes. Also, I think it's gonna be a different skill set for law school than for my engineering classes. Gets me out of the house too, and I meet new people. Sounds like a win win to me.

Honestly, I am not really considering it. Mainly because I plan on working up until the mandatory orientation, which is the 24th - 26th. Additionally, I was worried about overdoing it, before school starts. If you look at the orientation from last year, it seems to cover some of the topics of the optional week course, just not as in depth (assuming, this is the schedule for the mandatory orientation). For example, on day one, you go over "how to dissect a case".

--LinkRemoved--

I got that link from this page, but that schedule clearly has not been updated yet, as the dates are off and the url says 2010: --LinkRemoved--

Now, in this case, I could really see the added value. Coming from a hard science major or any one of the other traditional past participant backgrounds, I could see wanting the extra week. I'm sure it can only help, but at this time, I do not plan on attending.

hmmmm... i probably won't do it and will just browse through the TLS threads on how to prepare for 1L, and how to take notes, outlines, etc. but yeah, for those coming from a hard sciences background, it will probably be a good introduction to literary based studies.

i'd never heard of the Cloisters, so i just googled it, and i had no idea those condos were called that! that's a trendy area, and those condos are all new and gorgeous. i have no idea how much they cost, or if they come furnished (my guess is no), but if you can afford it, that would be perfect. the ONLY downside is that they are right above/next to/near a very popular beer lounge called fermentation lounge, so there might be a noise issue if you are in a condo really close to the bar. but i still think it would be worth it, because it's close enough to walk to class, etc.

I was in Tallahassee last week and wanted to look at Cloisters but couldn't get in contact with anyone. I did see an ad for one on craigslist and I believe the price was around 1250 a month. For that price they better have a washer and dryer. I think rent will vary though because they are privately owned condos and then the owner rents it out themselves. I'd say that the minimum is probably a thousand a month. They do look awesome though.

I am ending up at Blairstone at Governor's Square. Pretty affordable and rent includes water, sewage, trash and cable.

Checking in...

I was set in STONE on Villanova for about three months, with no thought of FSU. I figured even if I did get accepted to FSU off of the wait list, I would still be attending Villanova 100%.

I was wrong. I got the call of acceptance, and it all made sense.

Lately, anxiety started hitting me about moving to the NE and perceptibly spending the rest of my life there. The cold weather. No beaches. No boats. No pools. No sun. No laying out. No t-shirts. No shorts. ETC. All things I now appreciate more than ever! What a relief...that in-state tuition is just SUCH a relief. Today, I'm going to celebrate at a bar on the intercoastal overlooking the water! There's no place like South Florida!

I did my UG at FSU and I also have a few friends already attending FSU law, so if anyone has any questions about anything, feel free to give me a shout!
