Re: UVA Class of 2014
How difficult is it to get a public interest job that would qualify for loan forgiveness? Assuming worst case scenario and I can't get a private sector job anywhere, are public interest jobs readily available for UVA grads or is there a chance I can end up 200K in debt without the chance of even qualifying for loan forgiveness?

Just chiming in: I live at the Woodlands currently, and I'm generally very happy. There's only one thing you should keep in mind: The hill that leads up to the apartments is relatively steep and when the street gets covered in snow you are not getting up the hill w/o 4WD. On the last day of 1L exams I had to ditch my car in the county office park and walk the last 1/2 mile to the apartments. That said, I live in a 3BR townhouse and I have no plans to move.kelc213 wrote:I didn't get to tour a unit when I visited Woodlands, so I stand corrected if there is W/D in unit...sarahlawg wrote:perfect.utexas10 wrote:FWIW, I leased at the Woodlands and I definitely know my unit has a w/d. And from what I can tell, all the floor plans online appear to have them in unit, either in the kitchen or hallway behind double doors.
In that case... who wants to live in either woodlands or jefferson ridge with me?

Re: UVA Class of 2014
Found out yesterday that my dream job with the State Department's not going to happen, this year at least. So, time to get excited about UVA! I was accepted and declined last year, glad they didn't hold that against me this time around. Barring something miraculous, I'll be accepting this time.
Anyone know anything about the aquatic center? Is it convenient to use for law students? Super crowded? Are there any other lap swimming pools in the area?

The Aquatic Fitness Center (AFC) is very nice and there are lanes for lap swimming. The pool itself is very big. I was only there once or twice but it's not too crowded. There are a decent amount of machines and free weights as well as several basketball courts.suspicious android wrote:Found out yesterday that my dream job with the State Department's not going to happen, this year at least. There is an awesome looking giant hot tub FYI. Convenience is suspect, you can't walk there really. There are buses that run down near the AFC I'm sure but I'm not sure what they are. It's probably on UVA's transit website.

what do you drive? are snow tires allowed in VA? I have no clue what winter is like there... but I have been in some pretty awful snow (on some pretty awful hills, re: Ithaca) with my honda in its snow tires and gotten through it...soullesswonder wrote:Just chiming in: I live at the Woodlands currently, and I'm generally very happy. It has snowed twice for a total of like five inches. In a normal winter, you'll be more than fine.

Yeah, I didn't mean to give the impression that it was a regular occurrence.jawsthegreat wrote:It has snowed twice for a total of like five inches. In a normal winter, you'll be more than fine.

+1 to all of this- the giant hot tub is actually (well, supposedly..) the largest on the east coast? Zero verification done there, but that is the UVA lore.joeshmo39 wrote:The Aquatic Fitness Center (AFC) is very nice and there are lanes for lap swimming. The pool itself is very big. Also to convenience, buses run there, don't think they go to the law school but to the general area.. when I went there in UG I drove, but you usually have to pay to park. Or maybe not, my friends didn't seem to, but Im a sucker for these things.

I didn't know snow tires were ever illegal! In my neck of the woods people put chains on regular tires so maybe that's to circumvent a law and not to be rednecks? Anyone?
Regardless, you won't need them in VA- almost never snows. When it does, find alternative methods of transportation for a day, it's probably easier than planning for it.

well I know in NY you can only wear them for certain times of the year. They can give you a ticket in the summer.arism87 wrote:I didn't know snow tires were ever illegal! In my neck of the woods people put chains on regular tires so maybe that's to circumvent a law and not to be rednecks? Anyone?

That's good to hear about the snow. I was a little worried there for a second...

Sounds like you were being sarcastic, but honestly that is quite reassuring to me if true. I'd take that if needs be. It's not like I'm giving up a 50k/year+ job to go to UVA Law like some people are.suspicious android wrote:Very reassuring!YCrevolution wrote:If you're not picky about what kind of PI job/where it is, I think you'd probably be able to find something... also, hopefully the economy will be better in a few more years.
