Are you 0Ls hiding my grades?

I dont understand how you guys still havent gotten grades from last semester? I guess they have to have them in by Feb 1st right?

I tried posting this in the "2L taking questions" thread but didn't get a response... Too busy discussing grades I guess, haha. So here goes:

I'm sorry if this has already been covered, but I couldn't find an adequate answer...
I'll be at UVA this Fall.
Is it better to try to find an apartment now or after May (when there should be more people moving out)?

From what I've read it would appear that you can do either.

Apartment complexes definitely might fill up but you can get good rates on private listings if your willing to wait it out closer to school. Obviously the longer you wait the less choosy you can be.

I visited Charlottesville a few days ago and decided on Jefferson Ridge. I'm the type who needs to know what I'm going to do. Plus private listings are extremely difficult if you can't get down there to look at them in my opinion. Too many risks for me

The UVA law students I have spoken to have said that they lived in Ivy Gardens and would recommend it for the first year. It is not an inexpensive place to live - $825/1 BR; $925/2 BR, and, according to the photos posted on the Ivy Gardens site, the interior does not merit that price at all. But, it is super convenient to the law school. Given its reputation as the most social place to live for law/business school students, that could be a great advantage, and might make the higher cost worth it, but it might be depressing to be surrounded by people who are living the undergrad-redux lifestyle. Where else do 1Ls generally live if not in Ivy Gardens? I am awaiting acceptance to the class of 2014 facebook pg, so maybe this question is answered there. I just thought I would throw this out there and see if anyone had an opinion.

For close to the law school: a place on Arlington Blvd.

Otherwise: The Woodlands and Jefferson Ridge are popular places (very nice amenities), but you'll have to drive to the law school.

Thanks YCRevolution! Would you also happen to have an opinion on any of those places (including Ivy Gardens)? Sadly, Jefferson Ridge is too pricey for my law school residence plans. Given that recent and very disturbing NY Times article on law school debt/joblessness, I feel like I should be living in a closet for three years.

You'll be able to read the Housing thread on Facebook once you get accepted but here is what a future classmate - KC-posted on there. Hopefully she doesn't mind me reposting it:

"I just returned from checking out condo places in Charlottesville. I visited Woodlands and Jefferson Ridge (which are basically in the same general vicinity- south of UVA, another place called Eagles Landing was also in the same place, though I didn't go check it out, which I regret.)

I also looked at Ivy Gardens and Jeffersonian (the law-centric complexes.)

My completely biased opinions:
- Woodlands is beautiful, great club house with gym, pool, bball, tennis, and sand vball. However all reviews and information online says that once you've signed the lease, the management company forgets all about you
- Jefferson Ridge, actually got to tour a 1BR/1Bath and a 2BR/2Bath, these places are pristine and HUGE. There is built-in storage and bookcases, working fireplaces, and same great clubhouse. Pricey (especially the one bedrooms), but this place could actually be worth it. I think I like this place more than woodlands because the W/D is in unit, whereas I believe at Woodlands they're in a communal area.
- Eagles Landing is on the same road as Woodlands and Jefferson Ridge and looks pretty comparable in price and amenities.

Going to Ivy and Jeffersonian after these places was kind of depressing, but proximity to school is a huge draw, plus these places are considerably cheaper. I've heard that some of the apartments/units are privately owned and operated, so they greatly vary in how much they're kept up and renovated. Jeffersonian is much closer than Ivy and probably that's what makes it in higher demand.

If I had to put money down today I'd pick Jefferson Ridge -- but only with a roommate or two. "

As far as Ivy v. Jeffersonian etc.......http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... start=1875 If you want to look through the first 30 or so pages theres a lot of housing stuff covered there. If you read through this topic there have been various opinions given.

At this point your only chance at Jeffersonian is to find someone who locks in a 2 BR and wants a roommate, the waiting list is presumably too long for you to get a place yourself. Ivy seems to have generally decent reviews from the law students on here. With two exceptions: there have been negative comments about their application process AND people who have had maintenance issues seem to have a bad experience in attempting to get them fixed. (If you google the reviews of it people seem to in general think the maintenance staff is complete shit.)

EDIT: The woodlands (at least the unit I saw) did have built in Washer and Dryer and if Jefferson Ridge is too expensive for you these places are woodlands is likely to expensive as well.

IMO, Woodlands and Jefferson Ridge were equally nice. Also just about the same distance from the law school though I think Jefferson Ridge was a bit farther (read a minute).

it looked like woodlands has the stainless steel appliances (fridge, microwave, and stove), which I love. Although if they don't have w/d in unit, that bumps jefferson up quite a bit.

Quick question about withdrawing from schools:

I had sent an email withdrawing from the remaining 2 other schools I had applied to immediately after I was admitted to UVA, but they neither responded nor acknowledged my email. What am I to do, as it isn't very convenient for me to call from overseas.

I wouldn't do anything more. I've heard that it can take awhile for them to get back. You have proof that you sent them.

If it makes you feel better, send it certified mail or something, but I don't think it's necessary.

I didn't get to tour a unit when I visited Woodlands, so I stand corrected if there is W/D in unit...

In that case... who wants to live in either woodlands or jefferson ridge with me?
