I don't want to have to deal with living above/below a landlord...I have had bad experiences with that.
hrm.... It's not my specialty, what with me having a house in the area... but I remember hearing reletively good things about L.C. Apartments (near W. Hartford Center), and Clarendon Apartments, which is near Quaker Lane and Farmington Ave. Maybe start searching there?

We should put together a restaurant list!! I was a broke college student when I was last in Hartford, so my restaurant skills are small. Also yay Corner Pug! Love that place.
Hey Snapdragon! That is a great idea - thankfully I am what they call a "serious foodie" and amateur cook, so I've got a pretty good list of places off the top of my head.

Let's see...

$
Elaine's - great little egg joint
Mo's Midtown - classic diner for anyone working in hartford.
Wood and Tap - Great burger joint close to the school.
Corner Pug - my personal favorite for chips and beer.
Reuben's Deli - Deli... Good pastrami sandwiches.
Pho Boston - Vietnamese, great Pho
Restaurant Siam - Thai, good takeout
Harry's Pizza - EXCELLENT Pizza.
Arch Street Tavern - Good food, Great Jazz every monday.
Lox Stock and Bagels - Best bagels in town.

$$
Ginza's Japanese Cuisine - My personal sushi-ya of choice, and I/we WILL be going there at some point. Awesome sushi, good pricing, and the owners are great.
Black Eyed Sally's - Great barbecue, good blues artists and jazz nightly. Very popular.
Max-a-Mia - one of the many restaurants owned by the Max restaurant group (you'll learn about them when you get here), good italian food.
Max's Burger - another one of Max's... good, but a little more expensive.
Chengdu Asian Bistro - probably best Chinese in Hartford area... but I haven't really looked around.
Plan B Burgers - Great bar and burger joint.
AC Peterson Farms - For that 12AM, "Really want pancakes moment".
Tapas Mediterranean Cafe - Good Gyros, tapas, and so such
The Elbow Room - used to be a good grill place, but has gone downhill recently.
Ichiro Sushi - Another good sushi joint, though a little more expensive.
The Firebox - A nice upscale bar in hartford, good for lunches and happy hour.

$$$
Max Downtown - Soo Expensive, and so worth it.
Trumbull Kitchen - supposed to be excellent, but I've heard uneven things over the last year.
The Pond House Cafe - excellent food, somewhat expensive, but great for romance.
Feng Asian Bistro - Probably the best sushi in the area, but I wouldn't go there except for very, very special occasions. Otherwise you'll go broke in a matter of hours.
Bestito - Fantastic and authentic mexican food, but pretty expensive. Worth the price, but not very affordable on the "law school" budget.
Bin228 - An expensive but high-class wine-tasting restaurant. (another passion of mine)
Cuvee - another expensive wine-tasting bar

Hrm... that's all I can think of... if people think of others, or want to know about something specific, I can probably expand on it. :D

Hm I will review this more closely while I am at work, but Kashmir on Franklin Ave (I think) is an AMAZING Indian restaurant. Dubious neighborhood, but awesome, cheap food.

Hey so,

as an undergrad I put on a few pounds. I know this is kinda an oxymoron, but are there any healthier type restaurants?

hm... I know both Tapas and the Pond House are supposed to be pretty healthy (as restaurants go).

Oh, and forgot another favorite, Restaurant Arugula. Excellent french food and surprising healthy for you.

I always wanted to go there in college!

And Mebo, no worries... we can re-balance the restaurant talk with more gym talk ;)

Haha ya, less gym + more restaurant = more weight = not so healthy. And then the, when I'm not busy Ill hit the gym...coming from a guy who at one point lived in the gym.

Friggin Harvard. Every time I get settled in and start to get excited about UConn they look in my direction and I get all disoriented.

Dude, honestly, with your stats...I am surprised you are not going elsewhere. Ride Harvard to the end, unless you love UConn and love Connecticut. I mean if you got a basically free ride and love ct and happy with ct and good with not making top money until years later if your that good...then i can say stay UConn....but with your stats man....you should be going elsewhere.

If you get an opportunity, take it. You only get one chance at life. And even if it does not work out, you took calculated side of probability and statistics - and once you have that paper, there is no one who can take that away from you. I realize money is a huge factor, but man you only live once....and if you got the opportunity to be big, why not go for it...no regrets man.

I guarantee you this, if you go to UConn and are not 100% satisfied, you will always wonder about elsewhere - Harvard. If you go to Harvard, you will never fully regret it, and you most likely will never think about UConn.

I guess my point is other than opportunities, the right choice will be the one where you can tell yourself "I never have to look back and wonder what it would be like at x school."

Trust me, if I get pulled off the waitlist I'm going. I'm just bitching because I would really like to settle in and get excited about where I'm going and plan for the future.

Yes I understand exactly how you feel. I got thrown a loop a few days after I dropped my deposit off. But decided I was still going to law school at UConn.

I'm happy because the registrar's office just got back to me and answered my question about PeopleSoft id credentials. Yay. I guess we get them in mid-June, if anyone else wants to know.
Suppose I'll see you all there in August.
Just throwing this out there: I'm taking the LSAT for a third time in June, however, because I already paid for it and I'm crazy. It probably won't make a difference unless I score a 180, or 179, or something impossibly higher than my IQ permits. So, despite my reinvigorated foray into the world of standardized logic tests, I shall see you in CT.
It'll be a hard transition for me though, since I live in Hong Kong and I love eating authentic fried noodles and drinking hot lai-cha everyday. Sigh.

Welcome!

We seem to have similar numbers - my LSN profile is the same as my screename. I agree with you, unless I scored crazy high on a retake, not much would change.

We still can find green tea ice cream in CT... my dad always said that was one of his favs when he'd spend time in Hong Kong.

Well, good luck on the LSAT! And there is good "asian" food in the area... you just need to know where to look for it. I know of at least one grocery that sells tea leaves for lai cha around here - though I prefer Darjeeling myself.

So very cool that you're coming all the way here from Hong Kong - where are the rest of you all from? Being a local boy I am curious to see who's coming to the neighborhood. :)

I don't mean to be misleading, so I'd better admit that I've only been living here since December, and before that I was in Korea for two years. And before Korea, I was hanging out in California, wondering what to do next.

Likewise. My SN on LSN is the same as on here. I wouldn't visit my page though; you might catch nightmares from it.

Nope, not a banker! I will PM you more info later.. I'm on my way out soon. but HK was just one of his favorite places to go on business. He spent a lot more time in other parts of China, but HK has a special place in his heart (which sounds terribly sappy, but there you have it).

Sorry about the rough cycle. My UW and BC dings made me particularly sad. However, I'm really excited about UConn, and have less of the dark cloud of debt looming over me than I would had I ended up paying sticker at either UW or BC. And the good thing is, it's pretty easy to get CT residency, so even anyone who is OOS essentially can get a 50% "scholarship" for 2L and 3L (unless you don't move to CT).
