Financial Aid office is closed for the day, but I'll check back Monday.

Here are some excerpts from the NYU website:

In the JD Scholarships section: To be considered for a Dean’s Award scholarship, individuals must complete the NYU School of Law financial aid application. This application is available to all admitted students and may be accessed through the Admitted Students link. We encourage all admitted students to submit this application, including students who applied for a named scholarship program as part of their application for admission.

And in the important dates section: April 1: FAFSA and institutional financial aid application priority filing deadline for incoming JD students.

Further, on the FAAPS system on the Admitted Students site, it indicates my application is not yet complete...

I'll just call the office tomorrow and get it sorted out.

Spoke to financial aid. In previous years another form was required, but it wont be going forward. They are still working out the kinks on the admitted students website, and while there is currently a link to FAAPS (the institutional form), I was given the impression it would be removed shortly.

Need Access and FAFSA should be all that is required.

I still think the toughest decision I'll have is living alone vs living with 1 roommate. I feel like I'll get very lonely alone (only time I ever lived alone I was in a relationship the entire year and I was alone like 10% of the time, so I don't know how I'll fare with that + the sometimes overbearing pressure of NYC). On the other hand, it would be nice to be free to watch TV, have people over, be able to have overnight guests/family visit, etc. whenever I want, and not be subject to the whims of my roommate during finals. I guess I just have this nightmare that I'll move all the way to NYC and have absolutely no human contact outside of class-time. That, and if I have family visit a few times a semester (I have a big family who I'm sure will use this as an excuse to visit NYC frequently), the money saved via hotels for just a few nights will kind of outweigh the savings of living with a roommate... Obviously there's no straightforward answer but is anyone else really wondering about this?

I totally agree with all the things you mentioned. I think the key is just finding a roommate who's down with all the above. I can't imagine friends or family coming to visit and me telling them to get a hotel. Heck no, that's what couches are for. The ideal situation would be maybe 3 or so other people sharing a place with similar views on the issues you mention above-- hopefully some price savings for having more people, plus you lessen the impact that one bad roommate has.

On a somewhat unrelated note, what info have we learned about ASWs? I've been looking at the different dates, but have yet to hear anything about a.) travel subsidies or b.) student hosts. Does anyone have information on either??

Yep! An alum here in Texas (2nd year Associate at V&E in Houston) emailed me last week, we set up a phone appointment for this past Monday and he spent about 20 minutes on the phone with me answering questions. Very friendly and helpful!

How much are you guys planning on paying for rent? What do you think is a reasonable upper limit so that you still have a decent amount left over from the room and board budget for food and whatnot?

How much are you guys planning on paying for rent? What do you think is a reasonable upper limit so that you still have a decent amount left over from the room and board budget for food and whatnot?

I'm not aiming higher than 1700/1800 currently. Might change to lower figure after I do some more research. Right now (in UG) I live on about 700 a month after rent and basic utilities and even that's a struggle with my spending habits (roughly 23 dollars a day is not that hard to spend when you discount a 7 dollar lunch + 7 dollar dinner...which is typical for me), so I can imagine that I might have to reduce my rent to 1500ish to find a good balance. Of course I have a small grey area of parental fall-back support so I'm not too worried...if that comes to change you can bet your ass I'll be in the cheapest 2BR situation I can find. Another big factor for me is where I will spend 1L summer.

Thank you for your email. Admitted students requesting a travel subsidy (to attend an admitted students' day) need to do two things.

First, you will need to send an email to law.finaid@nyu.edu indicating that you are in need of a travel subsidy.

The email you send to law.finaid@nyu.edu should contain the following
information:
1) Subject line - travel subsidy;
2) Which admitted students day you plan to attend;
3) Whether you will be traveling to and receiving a travel subsidy from any other school.

Second, you will need to complete the Need Access financial aid application. You can access the financial aid application via our Admitted Students Web site. The application form is available on-line and is accessible at http://www.needaccess.org/Home.aspx

Please bear in mind that our travel subsidy is a reimbursement of travel expenses, may range up to $300.

Feel free to contact me again should you have further questions. We look forward to the possibility of meeting you at one of our Admitted Students Day programs or at another time this spring.

Yeah, that is hard/impossible. But I've done it before. Again, I'd have supplemental income as well. I don't plan on taking out 70,000 in loans a year right now. Maybe 75% of that will be loans. And I'll probably slip over the budget a few K with the rest. I'll probably come in around 73k. I just don't know if 70k/3or4BR apt is doable for me right now in law school for the first year. Going 3K over budget to have a little "dont spend your life in a cubby" space doesn't sound too unreasonable if the money is there. It's just that this is 3 years of my life I'm not going to get back, and I don't want to be unhappy for all of it if it means only saving 10k in loans over 3 years on a 210k education... But then again, I might change my mind.

On a side note, has anybody else's tuition deposit check cleared?

It was my understanding that admitted students need to submit a Dean's Certification from their UG (at least that's what I had heard in other threads). Does anyone know where I can find this form? I'm looking everywhere on the site and the ASW, and I can't find it.

Actually, they allocate 19839 for room and board, which over 9 months is roughly 2200 a month. That extra $200 a month is big!
