Re: Duke Law Class of 2014
Anyone want to post some details on their visit to Duke?? Ive been invited for the Mordecai interview and Im trying to decide whether I want to do it or not. Would be awesome if someone visited both Duke and Michigan and could do a comparison.

I don't know anything about Michigan, but I wrote up something on Duke for this thread. http://top-law-schools.com/forums/viewt ... 8&t=145588tkgrrett wrote:Anyone want to post some details on their visit to Duke?? Someone mentioned getting a scholarship offer in the mail on another thread. How many of you have received one? I got confirmation of my scholarhship form on Feb. 1, so I'm guessing it will take a little while.

Is it FUN? I'm interested in Duke/the south in general, and pretty sure I'll get a great education at any of the schools I'm considering.. but UVA is killing Duke in the fun column so faridiothek wrote:hello and welcome

If you have a spare minute or two, I'd love to hear just your general impressions of Duke/your classmates/Durham so far. Thanks a lot.idiothek wrote:hello and welcome

i haven't yet but plenty of people do. i'm actually trying to get tix for the georgia state game but none of my friends wanna give them up haha.thecilent wrote: Do you go to the games in Cameron at all??
can't say anything about uva, but duke is a lot of fun. coming from miami, i thought i was in for a real snoozefest for three years. but actually durham has a pretty sweet night life and great restaurants. of course the most fun will be with the people you meet here. my classmates are a blast and good people.arism87 wrote: Is it FUN? classmates are fun and more importantly pretty damn helpful when it's crunchtime. the school is much more collegial than i imagined it would be. duke itself is fine. only problem: those pesky undergrads giving the rest of duke a bad rap. oh and we don't hang out much with other schools. i've heard people at the nick environmental school and the nursing school are cool, but i haven't interacted with them much myself. as for durham, it's not bad. the downtown area is going through a revitalization period right now, lots of nice brick buildings that used to be tobacco warehouses. and if you're into music there are lots of cool shows either in durham or at chapel hill or raleigh.beachbum wrote: If you have a spare minute or two, I'd love to hear just your general impressions of Duke/your classmates/Durham so far. Thanks for the info! I actually been to Durham quite a bit, but I like Raleigh a bit better :pidiothek wrote: let me know if you want me to expand on anything
Where do most of the law students live?
Being such a small class, it must be pretty close knit right? Is it competitive?

Is there a good (read: cheap) way to get from the Raleigh airport to Duke? I saw that taxis are like $30 each way.. at that rate it would be cheaper to drive, but I'd sooner die than be stuck on 95 at rush hour... lol

the students are pretty close. there are only a handful of people i haven't interacted with.
as for whether we're competitive... i don't think so, really. if anything it's more of an internal competitiveness. if you see someone in the library all the time it makes you wonder if you should do the same. but everyone figures out what works for them, and when it comes to sharing--information, study materials, or what we understood from a case--we help each other out.
a friend, maybe? i've driven to the airport a couple of times and i haven't really dealt with much traffic.arism87 wrote:Is there a good (read: cheap) way to get from the Raleigh airport to Duke? Congrats! Does anyone know what happens if you turn in the form and don't get any money? Will they still notify us with that decision, or if after a certain amount of time has gone by without hearing anything I should just assume that I won't get anything?Blindc1rca wrote:Dean's Scholly 67,500 what up y'all!

Grats on the scholly, same as I got (post-negotiation from 60).
I'm pretty sure that they will not just give you silence. I think they release the offers in batches based on receipt, including the non-offers IIRC.

I touched on this a little in another thread, but do you (or any current students) have a feel for how Duke is with need-based aid? My stats are probably too low for merit-based scholarships, but I think I have a legit case for need-based money, if Duke is willing to play ball.DallasCowboy wrote:Grats on the scholly, same as I got (post-negotiation from 60).

Just mailed in my scholarship form, FWIW.

Re: Duke Law Class of 2014
Hi all, my fiancée just got into the Ph.D. program of her dreams at UNC-Chapel Hill and may get shut out of all the other schools she applied to in other locations (wasn't expecting this at all). If nothing changes, one of us is gonna have to make a huge sacrifice for the other. I plan on informing Duke of my situation tomorrow, and if the $$ offer I get is attractive enough, I may just end up in Durham. Dunno if it would take a Mordecai to do it, but a Mordecai would almost certainly do it. Not that I'm likely to be nominated since I haven't heard anything since I was admitted in September. Maybe my sob story will change their minds?

Try reposting in the "hanging out on the internet" thread. Need-based aid is obviously not a big talking point among the 1Ls, so I have no idea. It does seem like almost everybody got something, merit or otherwise. They probably will at least max out your Perkins allotment. They granted me 2k/yr Perkins (out of 5k?) as someone who put $0 down as far as my own assets straight from UG. Which reminds me, I never filled out my FAFSA for this year.beachbum wrote: I touched on this a little in another thread, but do you (or any current students) have a feel for how Duke is with need-based aid? Also, let me know if any of y'all end up sitting in on Doriane Coleman's Torts class (seems to be the go-to). I'll be sure to gun hard.

Re: Duke Law Class of 2014
Thanks for taking questions, DallasCowboy, even though you're backing the wrong team (Go Rams!).
This might sound kinda lame... but what does a typical 1L schedule look like? I know Duke only has the 3 classes (+LRW) that count for 4.5 credits each: does this mean that each class is longer (per meeting) than at other schools, or how does that work? Thanks a lot.
I won't be able to make it to ASW, but I'm hoping to drive down there one of these days.
