I went to ASW after getting in ED and I don't really regret it...

Yeah, just wanted to echo everything said in joe's post. Also, it really makes life easier to go to ASW, look at all the apartments you're interested in and just pull the goshdarned trigger on where you'll be staying during school. It's not necessary to do so during that time as there will still be places to go to later, but you might as well and it's nice to get it out the way.

Since it hasn't been mentioned, I totally recommend applying to that...what do you call that goshdarned thing again? It's the Stay-with-a-UVA-law-student-for-ASW thing that the SBA had last year. Not sure if it's up yet since I'm preoccupied but it was worthwhile getting the viewpoint of folks who have been here for awhile.

I know it's a sacrifice of proximity, but I went ahead and signed a lease with the Woodlands when I went to visit Charlottesville. Is anyone living there/considering doing so?

utexas10 - i've been doing some housing research and noticed the Woodlands, as well as several other complexes right around the same area. I'm strongly considering living in that area - mind sharing some details about the Woodlands and that general area that I couldn't otherwise find online? (ie. driving time to law school, rent price/specials, etc)

I don't know if I can necessarily add anything you wouldn't be able to find by searching the forums for "Woodlands," especially as I was only able to visit, for the first time, for 2 days. However, when I drove from the complex to the law school it took 9 minutes. I don't know enough to say whether that's pretty standard, but I was just shooting for a <15min drive so I was satisfied. It's also a safe assumption that I was speeding. I leased a two bedroom flat. No specials for me, it's the $1380 you see on the website, although there was a $400 rebate you can take in full or apply to the rent. I will say that it's as pretty as the website makes it appear. I took a tour of a unit and was sold on the amenities. Pretty pumped about the pool...

I was there this weekend and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna put my money down at Jefferson Ridge. I saw the townhouse at the Woodlands and it definitely looked gorgeous. But the prices there were too much for me and the reviews (on google) helped scare me away some.

While I was there I visited Eagles Landing which despite having a better price felt a lot like undergrad dorm housing. It seemed really small and the place they showed us smelled like a cigarette despite having brand new carpets in it.

I was originally looking for a 2 bedroom for me and my girlfriend so that I'd have a place to study when she was doing her thing. The 1 bedroom at Jefferson Ridge though was massive (877 square feet I think?) It had a built in alcove with a desk to study in which if I block it off right seemed more than adequate. Also I checked out the AC/Boiler unit and they were both extremely energy efficient which is obviously good for the electricity bill. I clocked it at a 10 minute drive on both the routes (highway and local). I assume the local one gets backed up because of traffic but it seems hard to believe the highway becomes too much of a nightmare.

Also, I looked at some place on Rio Road which the name escapes me of right now. Possible Abbington Crossing? Or something like that. They had town homes which were really nice. Extremely small kitchen and dining area but the bedrooms were definitely adequate. They said they have limited availability on them though because they sign so many non-students. Also the pool was like barely ever open it seemed. The main problem with those though was that despite the fact they are doing renovations they don't change the furnaces, etc. out. So essentially you might be moving into a place where it will cost quite a bit of money in electricity. (They also had apartments which they were refurnishing which had very small bedroom/bathrooms although having a beautiful kitchen area. They do not replace those items in the remodeled apartments either.)

Long story short, Woodlands is right down the street from Jefferson Ridge so assuming I do what I think I'm going to do we'll be right near each other, though possibly far from everyone who manages to get a place on Arlington Blvd.

Question about the location/parking situations in Ivy/Jeffersonian

I'm not sure how much this has already been debated on here, so apologies if this is not a new question. Is it true that if you live in Jeffersonian or Ivy, you're not going to get a parking spot at the law school? Or is it just for Jeffersonian?

Also, is there some kind of walking path linking Ivy to north grounds? I got the sense that Jeffersonian is 5 minutes walking at the very most, while Ivy seemed much farther away (behind Darden -- not a direct road to get from Ivy to the school.) I may have been missing something though...

Now I'm a 0L so I could be wrong but I've done a lot of reading on this forum. If you live in Ivy your parking spot would be farther away then your apartment for the most part so they don't allow you to get a parking pass.

The second question I can answer from seeing it. The back of Ivy's apartment complex has a staircase that puts you on the road where the law school and business school is. Ivy is closer to the business school while Jeffersonian is closer to the law school. Ivy is still a quick walk you just have to walk past the business school which is by no means far from the law school.

As far as the washer and dryer being at the woodlands - the townhouse they showed me had them (in a closet by the kitchen). Jefferson Ridge also has them, where they are changes based on the layout. The 1 Bedroom they are full sized but stacked in the bathroom.

Ivy is uphill from the law school and as you come down and across the road you hit the gym, Darden, and then the law school in that order. The thing about Ivy is that it has the stairs to walk down toward the law school, probably a 10 minute walk for most, but the only entrance for a car is way on the other side of the complex and requires you to circumnavigate the globe to get to the law school. It is a really big complex so your distance from the stairs will probably change the length of your walk fairly significantly. Even the closeest Ivy apartment is further than the Jeffersonian. I will say Ivy apartments are nicer, and more pricey, from what I've seen. The Jeffersonian is also closer to Barracks which has a grocery store and Chipotle. There is also a new pizza place called Brixx which is pretty solid and has a good beer list. Other than that, it's a lot of chains and fast food in Barracks combined with stores I don't want to shop at. If you don't have a car and you want to grocery shop, just walking from the school to Barracks then back to Ivy is probably going to take 25 minutes minimum. These are all thoughts that may interest people. If you don't have a car, I think Arlington is the place to be.

The poster before me is right, if you live at Ivy driving to the law school probably goin to cost you time for the most part. If you guys have more questions let me know. I'm a walker so I know the lay of the land pretty well.

To add my $.02 to the mix, even though no one has asked about this: If you're driving to school, so long as you get there before 8:30am, maybe even 9am, you can always find a parking spot on Arlington that is as least as close as Grad Centre. I couldn't justify spending $500 on a D3 pass (or a worse deal yet, $200 or whatever on a Blue lot pass) when I could park as close or closer for free. It's what I've done all year and, with one caveat, it hasn't been a problem. The caveat is days on which I don't have class until later in the day. I found, however, that it was a good way to force myself to get up by a decent time and go study. Also, I've chanced it a few times and have yet to get my freebie warning. Plus, after 5pm all the lots are fair game anyway.

Regarding the walk from Ivy to North Grounds, they have a nifty video on their website that shows how long it takes to walk there in real time. The video's length is around 5 minutes.

I couldn't justify spending $500 on a D3 pass (or a worse deal yet, $200 or whatever on a Blue lot pass) when I could park as close or closer for free. I logged in two days ago to fill out the financial form that is specific to UVa. I didn't yet have my parents information so I had to save it and go back to fill it in. No problem. I save it and the next day sit down with my parents to get their financial info (ugh lol). When I go back to continue the form it prompts me that something I've done is expired. Anyway I click it anyway hoping it wont make me answer all the questions again and it prompts me to do some 10-15 minute quiz of multiple choice questions. It was ridiculously easy so I skipped all the reading and answered the questions. Then it automatically created me an email (by default its your computing ID but then you can make up to two aliases).
