Things are expensive down here, but not too outrageous. I did bring my car and found a good deal for parking; the cable option in my building is kind of costly, so I'm going to sleep on whether I can live without bad Lifetime dramas and Oxygen Channel for a few months. Dog parks so far get two paws up...

I'm planning on bringing my dog after first year- I've become so attached to her now, so don't know how I'm going to survive without my baby girl Glad to hear the dog parks are nice! Haven't yet been to one though. My dog weighs in at a wee 5lbs, so I'm worried she might get squished under any roughhousing that I imagine goes on in such places

Oh, the poor puppy is going to miss you Lots of little dogs down here, though, which is nice. My girl likes the big park by Navy Pier a lot--we just went for a long walk, and now she is snoring like a buzzsaw...

I know, when they started quoting me at $285 an $300 a month for a parking space, I was like, "Screw this, I'm not moving." My building had a deal with the River East Art Center garage on Illinois Street for $129 a month, which is definitely a steal down here for indoor underground parking (I was also able to lower my insurance rate because I was parking indoors); you may want to ask and see if McClurg has a similar partnership with a garage nearby. Otherwise, I'd try Craigslist and see if anyone is willing to rent a space below market rate. For a while I was watching Craigslist and saw some decent prices.

You can also try this website: http://chicago.bestparking.com. It lists all of the garages by neighborhood, and some have deals it looks like. I personally don't mind walking to a car and then throwing on flashers to bring up groceries or whatnot.

That said, I lived in Chicago for two years without a car--you can definitely get by without one. It seems everyone who doesn't have a car complains about not having one, and everyone who does have a car complains about having one If you need anymore help, let me know.

Hi everyone! I just got the email that they received my deposit so I'll be joining you at NU in August! Of course now I have the mad scramble to figure out housing, move to Chicago, etc. Where is everyone thinking of living?? I've read through this thread a little bit, and I know that I want to live within walking distance from the school, but Streeterville is crazy expensive. I was thinking of living with one of my friends from UG, but it doesn't seem to be much cheaper for a studio vs. 2 bedroom per person, so I'm not sure if she and I are doing that anymore. Any info would be much appreciated!

I didn't have gas in my building, but electric was about $30 a month (studio apt where heat was free), except in the summer where it was $70-90. Internet was $19/mo for the initial special, then $35 for RCN's slowest connection.

I had electric heat which means large electric bills. My bill was like 100-130 in the winter, damn near zero in the fall, and like 70 last Sept. I suspect when I start using AC all day it's going to skyrocket again. But having a small studio means I can leave the heat and AC off all day when I'm not around. I think I have like 600sq.

I'm pretty sure we got our sections like 2 days before orientation, grades for 1st semester came out a week later than they were supposed to, and at this time last summer they still didn't believe me that I don't have a penis.

It will really depend on the building. I have lived in places where the only thing I had to pay was electricity (which ended up being about $30 a month) and I have lived in places where I had to pay electricity, cable, gas, and internet and that costs me more like $80 per person (in a three bedroom). A lot depends on if you have electric heat, radiant heat, or gas heat too.

We didn't get ours until right before orientation when we got our sections. And 2Ls/3Ls don't even have the list of classes for the fall yet.

But if it's the same as it was for us, you'll have classes at 8:45 (*shudder*), 10:55 and 1:25 M-W, and 10:25 R-F. When CLR meets varies by section.
