Congrats!
Thanks. Some of the comments that I have heard from my friends so far:

"Why don't you attend William and Mary? I heard that they have a good law school."

"Isn't UVA known for a good MBA program?"

"Congratulations. I heard that UVA is harder to get into than even some of the top ten schools."
But, UVA IS a top ten school.
"You mean it is a top ten public school?"

I'm looking for a one bedroom deal within walking distance of the law school. Price isn't too much of an issue. I've been looking strongly at the Copeley Apartments, but the only 1-bedroom option is under family housing. Anyone know if those open up to singles if not enough families move in?

I'm open to alternatives as well- just has to be walkable. Any ideas?
Don't live in Copeley. Live in Ivy Gardens or one of the places on Arlington Blvd (Arlington Court, Arlington Townhomes, Graduate Centre, Jeffersonian, or 2400 Arlington Blvd).
Yeah I'm at Arlington Court. It's pretty nice. 3-4 minute walk to the law school. Around 10 minute walk to the grocery store. Good times.

I have gotten some hilarious comments, too.

- One of my coworkers asked why I'm not going to New York Law School (!!!) or "what's that other good one? Cardozo?"

- My boss asked me whether UVA is a public school. When I said yes, he said, "So, it's not very good, right?" I am currently attending and employed at a public university (which is, admittedly, not very good).

- I generally tell people where I'm going without mentioning rankings. I feel like my excitement speaks for itself. But my mom is really thrilled and a little more boastful. She called a friend from back home (small central Asian country) and said that I'd gotten into the tenth best law school in America. That person thought my mom was complaining. She sighed and made a joke about me having down's syndrome. My mother tried to explain that America is big and there are a lot of law schools here, so tenth best is pretty damn good, but I don't think her friend totally got it.

I'm happy about the lack of lay prestige, honestly. It means that my enthusiasm is not mistaken for pretentiousness. I couldn't wear a Harvard Law hoodie on my campus without being perceived as an epic doucheosaurus. The fact that UVA is not a big name school in my region also means there's less discomfort with friends and family members who attend lower-ranked law schools (because I'm not attending their dream school). And my understanding is that UVA is plenty prestigious within the legal field, which is what really matters.

+1

And yeah, I've also been getting the why not WM thing a lot...in VA they both have a lot of and pretty much equal UG lay prestige so people I guess just assume that it carries over to law schools too.

The "why not" is such a rude question. I don't see any reason to ask or a good way to answer. I either have to dis some other school, which I don't want to do, or extol the virtues of UVA, which is kind of awkward.

Amen, I get the exact same thing in Florida. "So I guess you didn't get enough points on the L-S-A-T's to get into UF?" There's no good answer.

You all are way too nice. When asked why I wasn't going to Georgetown, I said, "Because Virginia is better."

But then I went to GW for UG and don't mind sticking it to Gtown.

^I get the exact same thing. "Why don't you go to Gtown, did you not get in, blah blah blah..."
Or, "Why aren't you going to University of X instead?" (Insert one's public state university)

I get amused, then annoyed, then back to being amused again. smh.

Sorry if this has been asked already, but do rejections/waitlists for ED come via email or snail mail. My status date changed today, so I'm a little nervous that I haven't gotten a call or email yet.

Really? UF is barely in the top50 right? do people really think its better then Virginia/Michigan? UT is ranked 15 so even people who are applying to LS ask me lol

Although it may be shocking for the TLS members, the general public doesn't know much about THE ranking. I even get asked, "Why do you want to move to Charlottesville to attend the public school when there is a private school where you live?" For some people, public means mediocre and private means good. I live in Richmond by the way.

Whats even more shocking is that many lawyers who work in small law don't know what U.Va. is. I talked to a tier 4 graduate who told me to apply to his school instead of U.Va.

Yeah, the concept of being from Florida and not wanting to attend UF boggles people's minds around here.

+1 people were definitely more impressed here when I told them I got into UF as opposed to Michigan. If it is not an Ivy chances are the best state school is going to have more lay prestige.

i'm not sure there are 9 month leases in charlottesville. certainly not in desirable housing near the law school. it's not what you might call a buyer's market.

I got mine off Craigslist. I actually had never seen the apartment before I rented it out. I'm from out in California and didn't get into the school until late so never really had a chance to visit apartments. I saw the place on craigslist and asked ycrev and vanwinkle about it and they approved.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
