transfer with 1st semester advisory grades?

Post by Anonymous User » Fri Jan 17, 2020 2:51 am

Hello, I am a 1L and just started my 2nd semester.

I am considering transferring after my first year and had a question about fall and spring grades.
Our school only gives advisory grades (P/F) for the fall semester, and so I would not really have any grade to report until my spring grades are out.

I'm not too sure if any other school has advisory grades for the fall. I was wondering if anyone knows how I can go about the transfer process with this, and if it is possible to transfer with advisory grades for fall and spring term grades.

Thank you for your help!

In the spring, do you get actual grades with a GPA? If so, you should be fine. If you never get letter grades I think it would pretty difficult.

You can always look at 509 reports to see how many people transfer out of your school and/or which schools have accepted transfers from your school.

Thank you for the replies.

I do get grades in the spring but I was just worried because there are no letter grades (thus no GPA, no percentile standing) for the fall.

Also thank you for the 509 report suggestion! Never thought to look at that.

Due to not having any real first-semester grades, your transfer prospects will rise or fall based solely on your second-semester grades. I doubt schools would hold your lack of first-semester grades against you; rather, they'd simply hone in solely on your second-semester grades*.

(*Obviously, lack of first-semester grades is likely to be a deal killer in terms of Georgetown's EA transfer program or other similar programs that only look at first-semester grades.)

Thank you for the reply. Do you think the schools will wait until my spring semester gets released? I understand that they usually go with the fall grades and use the spring grades to check up on their decision. I wouldn’t have anything to offer until then...

Also these advisory grades show as credit no credit on my transcript but we were individually given grades (as advisory.) But there is really no way to have the office acknowledge them as legitimate (like updating screenshot grades with actual transcripts.) So I don't plan to use them but some say that I should... wondering if anyone has any thoughts on that.

Most schools actually only take transfer applications after you've completed the whole first year, and want to see the first full year of grades, so you're not missing out on much (just a few schools will take applications based on one semester of grades). You won't be able to apply till you have grades - and official grades; advisory grades aren't going to be of any use to other schools since (I'm presuming) they could change by the end of the year. It's also probably your school's policy that you can't submit advisory grades as your grades, but you can check (with your registrar or academic dean, not other students).
